Teach your dog to wine

There’s no typo in that post title. Today, we’re talking about wine… the fun kind, not the kind that contains an h. You heard me… it’s that kind of post.

A few weeks ago, I celebrated a friend’s birthday with wine – specifically, the John Marshall Tasting Experience at Oak Hill. This property is connected to Barrel Oak Winery, which you must admit has a pretty fantastic acronym. BOW is run by some serious dog lovers – the pups even have their own bios on the winery’s website!

Anyway, as part of our tasting experience, we had the chance to get a personalized wine glass. I had a tough time deciding what to get…

Wine Glasses

Excuse the poor quality… an iPhone plus wine does not a masterpiece make.

In case you’re wondering, I asked for a Bella glass. Mr. Pup Fan asked for a Tavish glass. (We couldn’t have one without the other, obviously.) A friend who is as dog crazy as I am asked for a glass with her dog’s name on it as well, hence the Molly glass. (How do you know you have good friends? When they don’t bat an eye when you decide to have the dog’s name engraved instead of your own.)

(I’m not the only fan of Barrel Oak Winery… check out this great post about BOW from Beagles and Bargains.)

Did you know that many wineries are pet friendly? If you happen to live in the northern Virginia area, allow me to suggest another winery for you to check out. This Saturday (July 20), you can sip some lovely wine while supporting a local rescue. Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) is having a reunion, adoption event, and fundraiser at Bluemont Vineyard in Bluemont, Virginia. If you’re in the area, consider joining FOHA to sit, stay, and sip your Saturday awayAfter all, without FOHA, I wouldn’t have a Tavish in my life, and that would just be unacceptable. (It might be a hot one, so I may be attending sans Tavish. I’m sure he’ll understand.)

Somebody needs a V8

Maybe if I pay him off with some treats…

Are there any pet friendly wineries near you? If so, have you taught your dog to wine?

  1. Cooper Winery in Louisa, VA. Great people & extremely dog friendly. Every Memorial Day Weekend they sponsor a pet friendly tasting with vendors & adoptions from the Richmond shelters. Plus live music too.

  2. Via Bobbi Leder, if you live in the Austin Texas area:
The Singing Water Vineyards and Winery is a place all visitors should add to their must-do list. Located in the hills of Comfort, Texas the grounds are scenic, relaxing and dog-friendly. Dogs are even allowed in the winery while their owners taste test five different wines (for $5 per person), chocolate, nuts and crackers. The winery’s very own yellow Labrador Retriever, Lupe, is the inspiration for the sweet Merlot aptly named Sweet Lupe.

  3. Thanks for the shout out! We absolutely love pet friendly wineries and hope to explore a few more soon!

Are you involved with FOHA at all? I have been trying to get a hold of them or another rescue to donate some BlogPaws goods, but still haven’t gotten any responses. If you happen to have any contact info I would appreciate it!

  4. Almost all of the Woodinville, Washington, wineries are dog friendly. The dogs go with us to release events all the time. We also recently attended wine tasting at a shop in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario. Many of the shops and most of the wineries there are dog friendly too. What dog doesn’t love an ice wine!
