Christmas is fast approaching.  As a result, today’s No Frown Friday theme was an easy choice… enjoy some seasonal linkage:

  1. Instead of punny pet names, I’m just going to recommend you name your pet after one of Santa’s reindeer this week.  Why not?
  2. You know I love the Grinch’s dog, so I’m sure you’ll understand how much I love this quartet of real-life Maxes. (The antlers make me smile – Bella better watch out or she’s going to find herself in a reindog photo shoot.)
  3. Interested in doggie decorations? Check out some photos of the First Dog’s decorations.
  4. I’ve also got another Cute Math lesson for you: Santa suits + cute animals =  guaranteed holiday cheer.  These pets prove my point.  Still not convinced?  Your skepticism will melt away after you take a gander at these penguins.  (For bonus points, remember that elves are pretty cute too.)   
  5. Bella sure has been slacking off – apparently other dogs help out by wrapping Christmas presents.

Have a wonderful weekend – and if you decide to get your pet’s photo taken with Santa, here are some handy tips.  As you know, Bella doesn’t travel well, so no photos with Santa unless he makes a house call.  We’ll just have to live vicariously through you.

Getting into the spirit…

‘Tis the season… and nothing puts me in the holiday mood like a good holiday special or movie on TV.  We all have them – those classics that we just have to watch every year, or it just doesn’t feel like the holidays.  I thought I’d share a few of my favorite TV specials with you today (links are to clips from the shows where available):

  • Garfield’s Christmas Special – This one was my favorite as a child.  I loved everything about it, and could quote it from beginning to end.  Grandma is the best.
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas – A classic.  Confession: I sometimes have the urge to stage an impromptu dance party with this song.
  • Mickey’s Christmas Carol – Hands down, this is my favorite version of  A Christmas Carol out there.  (The Muppet version is a close second, of course.)  I get emotional just watching the opening.
  • Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer – I still refer to the Island of Misfit Toys on a regular basis (possibly as often as once a week).
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas – I am a Max the dog fangirl.  Cartoon version only, please.  As far as I’m concerned, that Jim Carrey thing never happened.
  • ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas – For some reason, this story of some mice and a clock (that’s the Cliff’s Notes version) was always one of my favorites.  The day I found it on DVD was a good one indeed.  I mean, this song…

There are definitely many other worthy choices… like my own personal honorable mentions Frosty the Snowman and Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too for example.  (Not to mention favorite characters, like the Heat Miser and the Snow Miser.)  And that’s just from TV.  As for Christmas movies… well, that’s a post for another day.

Anyway, it’s cold outside… so go snuggle with your pet.  Then tell me all about your favorite holiday TV in the comments!

Bella Holiday Tip #19

It’s been a busy week… so instead of your regularly scheduled No Frown Friday, I’m going to go ahead and share another Bella holiday tip.  Enjoy! 

I already showed you our 2008 holiday card.  Last year, we moved into a new house a few weeks before Christmas.  Bella used this experience as inspiration.  She advised us to send out our 2009 holiday wishes and our new address at the same time.  She’s a resourceful one:

If you can’t find a festive outfit for your holiday party, accessorize any old outfit with a few shiny bows.

So… now what?

I think Snoopy’s predicament above accurately represents how I feel the day after a big holiday. Planning, preparation, anticipation… and then it’s over, just like that.  I made some yummy cranberry sauce muffins this morning to help fill the void.  Now I need a new project…

In the meantime, it’s time for this week’s No Frown Friday:

  1. Your punny pet names for the week reveal that I still haven’t accepted the fact that Thanksgiving is over: Myles Foodish and William Labford.  (For my fellow pun lovers, you simply must read last Sunday’s Pearls Before Swine. Can you figure it out?)
  2. Want to see something amazingly adorable? Check out these photos of dogs dressed as turkeys.  All will seem right with the world after you do.
  3. Don’t eat too many leftovers… or else this might be your fate.  (Not sure what to do with all of those leftovers?  Serious Eats has some ideas.)
  4. Did you cook a turkey yesterday? I hope that you weren’t the one that asked these stupid questions of the Butterball hotline.

Anyway, I’m finally going to see the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows tomorrow.  I know… after my recent Potter-themed post, I bet you thought I’d be first in line on opening day.  Unfortunately, things have just been too busy.  In honor of my pending movie trip, I made my own butterbeer to go with dessert last  night – it was a hit (and unlike Universal Studios, I offered an alcoholic version as well). 

As I write this post, the peace talks between Roscoe and Bella have reached a new level – they’re both sleeping on the couch at the same time (dreaming of turkey, no doubt).  Expect some photos and a recap after Bella’s hostessing duties are done.

Remember our buddy Roscoe?  He’s visiting us for a few days.  If you’ll recall, Bella wasn’t very hospitable last time he came to visit.  This time?  So far, so good…

I am thankful for many things today, including the Bella-Roscoe Thanksgiving Peace Treaty of 2010.

Thank a Veteran today

I realize posting has slowed a bit this week… I promise I’ll return to normal form soon.  However, I did want to share a post from the archives in honor of those who have served our country.  On Memorial Day, I shared information about some inspiring heroes, both human and canine (including Military Working Dogs).

I think it’s a pretty appropriate post for today as well.  Thank you to those who have served our country – we are blessed that you chose to make such a sacrifice to protect our freedom.

Trick or treat

Until this year, we lived in an apartment – thus, Bella had very little exposure to children seeking candy on Halloween.  After the first trick or treater came by tonight, Bella decided to camp out by the door in case more showed up:

We’ve turned off the doorbell (which makes her a bit batty) and sent her to hang out downstairs with Mr. Pup Fan while I man the door. After carefully evaluating our candy selection (respecting the candy hierarchy), I’m ready to hand out treats.  Wonder what kind of costumes we’ll see tonight…

Anyway, thought I’d share a few quick photos of some of our decorations… the last one is my favorite.
