…for having dogs in my life and for growing up in a family that taught me to love animals. For me, it’s just not a home without a furry friend.
…that I’ve had ten years with my wonderful Bella. It’s been a fantastic decade.
…that Tavish joined our family this year. He and Bella have been getting along famously. One of these days, I’ll convince them to snuggle with each other.
…that I have found such a wonderful community of dog lovers. You guys rock.
I know everyone loves It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (and if I drew you a Venn diagram right now, a tiny circle labeled “me” would appear within that larger circle labeled “everyone”). However, I have to admit that there’s a Halloween special that beats it for me. Any guesses? Hint: it stars a big fat Halloween cat…
Revisiting this one made me wonder – what’s your favorite holiday special? I tend to think that Halloween kind of kicks off the holiday season, so feel free to talk Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other holiday that floats your boat.
Here’s a few (non-exhaustive) lists to get you started: Halloween specials, Thanksgiving specials, and Christmas specials. (Disclaimer: in my book, any list that doesn’t include the Garfield special for the holiday in question is not complete.)
I do love holiday TV (as my viewing habits during the next two months will reflect), so my list could go on and on. Feel free to discuss your favorites in the comments and perhaps I’ll share some of them during the holiday season! I’ll also tell you more about my favorite Thanksgiving and Christmas specials too as the dates get closer. Time to get into the holiday spirit!
You may remember that I told you about a local event called Barktoberfest… well, it was this past Saturday, and I had a blast! Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) really knows how to have a good time.
(As promised, I did live-tweet the event from the FOHA Twitter account – if you want to experience the day all over again, you can find the tweets here.)
Anyway, I took way too many photos (as usual), and wanted to share a few with you today. One of the many fun events was the Best Costume contest, which made for some excellent photo ops. It’s time for you to be the judge – which costume is your favorite?
Lucky for me, I usually work from home on Fridays… which means that I can take Bella to work with me today without having to actually take her anywhere. Given that Bella gets carsick in a rocking chair, this situation is ideal. We’ll have our own version of Paw-fice Space right here at home – Bella takes her Floor Patrol duties very seriously.
Today’s punny pet names take their inspiration from 9 to 5: Polly Parton (for a bird), Dane Fonda (for a Great Dane pup), and Gilly Tomlin (for a fish).
Oh, I can’t help myself. Here are a few more: Molly Parton (for a fish), Jane Fawnda (for a deer), Lily Tomcatlin, and Billy Tomlin (for a goat).
Next, check out this great slideshow of dogs participating in today’s festivities.
Among the offices celebrating Take Your Dog to Work Day? The gang at Richmond International Raceway. (I bet Bella’s glad that I don’t work there!)
Over at Peggy’s Pet Place, Kelly the pup has taken to the keyboard to tell us about her canine career.
The Poodle and Dog Blog gets into the act with this interesting story and clever post title: Dog on a Hot Thatched Roof.
Wondering how to work out the logistics of bringing your dog to work? Never fear. The Pet Health Care Gazette has some great tips.
Sure, it sounds cute… but should we be concerned? Will human workers soon be replaced by a cadre of clever canine professionals? It’s happened before.
That deep thought brings us to today’s video. This dog seems to love his job more than most people I know.
Don’t worry cat lovers, I haven’t forgotten you. Bunny’s Blog tells us all about taking your cat to work.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I confess that I sang “9 to 5” the entire time I was writing this post. It’s going to be in my head all day now. It’s enough to drive me crazy if I let it. (See what I did there?)
So, tell me… have you ever taken your dog (or other pet) to work?
Today’s topic is artistic ability. I have a little – occasionally, I can render a pretty good drawing, although I never quite mastered perspective and scale. I’m by no means an artist, so today we’re actually talking about doodles: what you doodle, when you doodle, how you doodle. (That word gets more fun each time I say it… doodle, doodle, doodle. How do any of you with a Labradoodle or other -doodle dog get anything done? I’d just repeat that to myself all the time.)
Why doodles, you might ask? Well, I’m a habitual doodler, but not terribly creative. Those that have ever sat next to me in a meeting, taken a class with me, or known me for years are aware that I have a doodle of choice. It’s appeared in countless notebooks and textbooks over the years.
Yesterday happened to be the birthday of my favorite doodle inspiration, so I thought I’d honor this esteemed personage with a belated birthday doodle…
I just had to share this photo today, in spite of my tragically high-waisted skirt. (I initially thought it was shorts, but I believe it’s actually a skirt. Though either way… still not my best look.) It’s a photo of my mom, some of our dogs and me.
My mom was a wonderful lady. I miss her today and every day. One of the things she instilled in me was a love of animals. I was looking through old photos earlier today – when I saw this one, I just had to smile.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the fantastic moms out there, and a big hug to anyone else who is missing their mom today.
As you may or may not know, I love to share a good video on Earth Day. Last year, I featured a dog kissing the world. (Earth Day also fell on a Friday last year, so it was perfectly timed for a linkathon.)
This year, I’m digging the video I shared on Earth Day 2010 out of the archives – I had just started the blog a few weeks before. Given that I probably had one reader then (counting myself), I figured it was worth sharing again.
So, without further ado, I give you my hero…
To borrow from myself, here’s what I said last time. I think it still applies:
“Captain Pug. He’s my hero. Going to take pollution down to zero. He is cuteness magnified, and he’s fighting on the planet’s side. (Hat tip to Captain Planet for infiltrating my brain for decades.) I mean, seriously… how cute and well-trained is this pug? Also, if anyone knows how I can join that dog’s carpool, please let me know. Best. Commute. Ever.
Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! Puppies! By your powers combined, he is Captain Pug, the cutest superhero ever.”
As a bonus (and so that I’m not just repeating myself), enjoy these photos I took at the National Zoo yesterday. Lions and flamingos and birds, oh my!
Today just so happens to be the secondanniversary of this blog. In honor of this momentous (to me) occasion, I thought I’d celebrate by sharing all of the punny pet names I’ve dreamed up over the past two years.
As you may know, I reveal a new punny pet name or two (or four) every Friday (and sometimes other days). I haven’t run out of names yet, so stay tuned for more.
Anyway, here are 215 punny pet names for your reading pleasure. They are presented in the order they first appeared on the blog. As a bonus, I’ve illustrated the list with some photos of Bella celebrating this very special day.
So, there you have it. Which one is your favorite? Tell me in the comments or entertain me with your own flights of punny genius! Have you ever had a pet with a punny name?
