The lovely Dawn from afFURmation had the brilliant idea to host a blog hop to promote cat adoption in honor of Adopt-a-Cat Month. Although Bella’s the star of the show here, our feline friends do make frequent appearances on the blog (and I’ve had a few kitty loves of my own over the years). Also, I’m never one to pass up a good blog hop… so, I’m joining up and sharing some adoptable cuties today.

So You Think You’re a Dog
It’s Friday! Time to send you into the weekend with some happy, happy, joy, joy! Let’s get to it…
- This week’s punny pet name is only for the most debonair of pups: Spaniel Craig.
- Anyone here watch Parks & Recreation? If so, I have a treat for you: Dogs That Look Like Tom Haverford. (I think this one might be my favorite.)
- Need more? Fine. Here’s some cats that look like Ron Swanson. (I love you, Internet.)
- I already shared this link on Twitter… but in case you missed it, I need to share it with you too. I read it three times yesterday and laughed like a crazy woman each and every time: “And that’s why you should learn to pick your battles” by The Blogess. I will be quoting this blog post years from now. My friends will beg me to stop, but I won’t be able to. Also, she has a cat named Ferris Mewler… could it get any better?
- A cat impersonating a dog? Yup, that happened. A robot impersonating a dog? That did too.
- Now for dessert, enjoy these cakes from the ’80s… er, I mean, ’80s themed cakes. I’m not asking you to stare at desserts that are two decades old, I promise.
From now on, I think we should dance our way into every weekend. As an additional bonus, this video helps me forget about my dancing-related irritation over this week’s So You Think You Can Dance results show. Anyone else?
(via Best Week Ever… which I keep accidentally typing as Vest Week Ever. Note to self – come up with concept for that title.)
I figured I’d give you a quick dose of dancing dogitude to send you into the weekend, but if you’re not satisfied, go watch the world’s preeminent Chihuahua flamenco dancer do his thing.
Have a fantastic weekend (and join the Saturday Pet Bloggers Blog Hop, after the jump)!

Hope your creative juices are flowing today – most entertaining wins my everlasting affection. (Perhaps I need to think up a better prize.) Anyway, have at it…
Oh, and I wanted to let you know that afFURmation is sponsoring a blog hop for Adopt a Cat Month on Monday, June 27. Bella’s always willing to help out her feline friends, so we’ll be participating – hope you will too!
I’ll rise, but I won’t shine
Today’s post is inspired by a wonderful activity that I never seem to do as much as I’d like… sleep! (Last night’s lack of sleep was courtesy of a ridiculous thunderstorm. Needless to say, Bella was not a fan.)
- First up, your weekly dose of punny goodness: M. Night Shyamalion and Napawsha Beddingfield. (Those are not my best work, I know. I’ll blame it on being tired.)
- Next, I give you a puppy falling asleep in his water bowl. I feel you, little guy… sometimes no matter how much you want to stay awake, it can’t be done. (Cuteness courtesy of Two Little Cavaliers.)
- Puppies who are fighting the good fight against sleep are always adorable. Exhibit B: this Vizsla puppy. Exhibit C: this fluffy marshmallow.
- In that same vein, I love this video of a gosling (by which I mean baby goose, not Ryan) falling asleep in a little girl’s hand. (Speaking of adorable feathered friends, did I mention that while I was out running the other day I encountered a little girl being followed around by four ducklings? No joke. I bet she also has songbirds that tie ribbons in her hair each morning, squirrels to buckle her shoes, and bunnies to tidy up her bedroom.)
- Side note – while watching each video above, I had the overwhelming urge to shout “Nap Attack!”
- You know, this post is actually the perfect moment to wish an early happy birthday to a champion napper, Garfield. His birthday, in case you are not as big of a Garfield nerd as I am, is June 19. In his honor, here’s a roundup of some of the best catnap videos the interweb has to offer.
Finally, I leave you with a dramatic interpretation of what I look like in the morning when I don’t get enough sleep:

Here’s hoping you have a relaxing weekend… squeeze in a few naps and catch up on that sleep so you won’t be a grump. After all, as Doggie Stylish says, happiness is a warm place to sleep!
Cat scratch fever
Although the blog has a very pro-puppy name, I love all sorts of animals (cats included… you may recall my weakness for sleeping kittens). So, today’s No Frown Friday post is dedicated to the big cats out there…
- As always, we begin with a dose of punny: Leopardo DiCatrio, Cheetah Rivera, Jaguar-ren Beatty and Puma Thurman. (P.S. Apparently my punning abilities qualify me for a job naming crappy wine. Who knew?)
- Those big cats must be born with good PR skills. They know how to make the rounds on the talk show circuit and ambush us with epic cuteness. Don’t believe me? Check out this fuzzy leopard cub on Letterman… and this baby cheetah (with bonus puppy BFF) on the Today Show.
- Speaking of cheetahs, this little guy could have quite the career on the talk show circuit doing bird impressions.
- The cheetah cubs at the National Zoo make me smile. That is all.
- Baby tigers! Lion cubs! A dog named Lion! I’m swooning.
- Tigers plus lions equals… ligers! Liger cubs adopted by a dog equals more cuteness than you can shake a stick at. (Where did that expression come from? Who is going around shaking sticks at everything? I had to find out.)
Never fear, I saved the most ferocious for last…
Hmmm… I guess I let the roar fool me. Or perhaps the fact that the kitten decided to hang out in a boot just wiped out my ability to think logically. Either way, I can’t fight the cute. Besides, I bet most house cats think they’re king or queen of their “jungle” anyway. (Seriously though, if you want to learn more about big cat conservation, go here.)
I’ve got a busy weekend ahead, but I do plan to catch the Tony Awards on Sunday. Anyone else? Whatever your plans for the weekend, I hope you’re more successful than this guy.
On Memorial Day…
Memorial Day… a time to remember those who have given their service to our country. Words really aren’t enough to describe this sacrifice and to truly honor those who have made it so that we can be free. So these simple words will have to do instead: thank you.
Last year, I shared my tribute to human and canine heroes alike. (I hope you’ll take a moment to revisit that post if you haven’t read it before – and even if you have – as it contains some fantastic links and information about War Dogs and Military Working Dogs. Also, if you are in the market for something to make you cry today, I have a feeling that post will provide what you need.)
I did want to share some links with you today:
- As you probably know, a dog helped in the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound. This amazing dog, a Belgian Malinois named Cairo, has received quite a bit of press (and even met the President). Ever since, it seems like hero dogs have been all over the news.
- Countless dogs have served our country over the years. Check out the history of war dogs in these two amazing photo . (Thanks to and Phetched for the tip.)
- As always, The Dog Files has a moving and visually stunning saluting Military Working Dogs.
- I also urge you to visit FiveSibes for a touching tribute and some fantastic videos that are just perfect for today.
- Check out this great post from Bocci’s Beefs about dogs of war and what would have happened if cats were helping us out instead. (Just kidding… after all, there are some truly patriotic cats out there too.)
- Last year, the National World War II Museum honored some four-legged heroes in an exhibit. You can learn about some of these heroes here.
- Can’t get enough of these fabulously furry heroes? Read about five more here or watch a movie about some heroic dogs or horses..
- Not all heroic dogs are on official duty, as illustrated by this tale of a unit in Afghanistan that was saved by some local strays.
As I mentioned last year, when these hero dogs retire from service, they need homes. After Cairo’s participation in the bin Laden raid, inquiries about war dog adoption have increased, but these heroes will need homes even after the initial rush slows. If you are interested in giving a home to one of these retired heroes, learn more at Fido Friendly and then head over to Military Working Dog Adoptions. (You can also check out the Department of Defense’s Official Military Working Dog Adoption Website.)
If you have any stories about Military Working Dogs (either in action or in retirement), click on over to Dogster and read about Maria Goodavage’s new book project, Soldier Dogs.
Take a moment to remember today…
Frustration is sweeping the nation
I didn’t have a chance to put up the usual Friday post thanks to Blogger’s issues yesterday. I realize it was back up and running at some point yesterday, but thanks to work and an outdoor showing of When Harry Met Sally (baby fish mouth!), the timing just didn’t work out. I’ll save my planned post for another time. Today, I leave you with this dramatic interpretation of how I felt when I could see my blog but not edit it…

Busy week, but I didn’t want you to think I forgot about you… I saw this comic today and it cracked me up. I think Bella’s head really would explode if this were to happen. As I was driving Bella to the vet this weekend, it occurred to me that, like the Simple Dog over at Hyperbole and a Half, Bella does not process the world well – sensory overload is always just around the corner. A mailcat delivering squirrels would probably push her over the edge. Though I suppose it would push me over the edge too… so let’s just hope the scene above never happens in real life. It would be like that Futurama episode where we learn why the cats really put up with us. I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords.
If only she had Corgis carrying her train…
Well, the world obviously has a case of wedding fever this week. Who am I to resist? After all, I did celebrate my own anniversary yesterday. I did, however, resist getting up at the crack of dawn to watch the royal wedding and will catch up via DVR instead. (DVR – best invention ever?) However, I bet I could have been convinced to get up if I was invited to a celebration like the snazzy one over at Bark’n About. Anyway…
- Your punny pet names: Cat Middleton was perfect for the theme, but it seemed too easy (though I really hope someone has a cat with that name). So, I also give you… Camilla Barker Bowles.
- Have you been to a wedding where the couple’s pet(s) played a role? As previously discussed, Bella does not travel well. Thus, we let her snooze at home during the festivities. It would have been fun to have her there though. I’ll just have to look at these best dogs and pups of honor instead. Prefer to let your pets be the star of the show? Check out this canine wedding photo over at Doggie Stylish or learn about a recent cat wedding in London via Life with Cats.
- Want more? Okay, okay… here are 45 photos of doggie ring bearers.
- Larry the Downing Street Cat was all decked out for the royal wedding. Help him celebrate by checking out this Royal Wedding CATs-travaganza Adoption event. (It’s part of the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend happening today through Sunday!)
- Are you all about the Union Jacks? The lovely under the blanket has rounded up some fantastic items with a British theme.
- Royal wedding not your style? Perhaps you’ll enjoy these awesomely geeky weddings instead.
Finally, did you see this fantastic Corgi ad? (It was to convince people to upgrade to HD coverage of the royal wedding – irrelevant now, but still adorable.)
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
The land of nod
The following video perfectly captures how I feel today.
Apparently I am all about sleeping kittens these days. Don’t tell Bella.
