Calling all DC/northern Virginia dogs: #Barktoberfest is this Saturday!

Are you a dog? Do you have a dog? Do you like dogs? How about cats? Do you live in the DC/northern Virginia area? Do you enjoy seeing dogs in costume? Do you like fun? If your answer to any of those questions is yes, then I’ve got an event for you…

(As an aside, if your answer to my first question is yes… I’m intrigued. How did you end up on my website? Obviously, you have learned to use a computer, so maybe you can also write emails? If so, let’s chat. I have much to ask you, dog genius.)

Anyway… if you’re in the DC/northern Virginia area, get out your calendar and pencil in plans for Saturday. Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) is hosting its annual fall festival – Barktoberfest – this Saturday, September 28! Join FOHA at the Loudoun County Fairgrounds in Leesburg from 10am to 5pm. Today… feels like a cat day.

  1. First up, your punny pet name: Meowucci Prada. 
  2. Can we discuss how much Iove it when cats have titles added to their names? You know, like Colonel Meow or Captain Pancakes.
  3. Speaking of punny goodness, this site takes song lyrics and changes them to be about cats. I think I’ve found my soulblog.
  4. Um, this proposal is certifiably adorable.
  5. Cats – what can’t they do? I mean, seriously. They can keep your head warm or make your day better. They’re models and style icons, gracing the covers of magazines. They’re even in politics.
  6. Oh, and did I mention that they’d be your eyes when you couldn’t see?
  7. This photo reminds me that as long as there have been pets, there have been pet lovers. (I can’t even. Just… awwww.)
  8. Any London cat lovers here? If so, add “visit the cat cafe” on your to do list. If you’re in Canada, you could check out a cat playground instead.

I was browsing the list of terms that bring people to this blog (as you do), and I realized that quite a few people are searching for punny cat names. I’ve shared several on the blog, but I’ve never compiled them into one post. Today, that changes.

Dear Cat Lover:

Thank you for visiting this blog in search of punny cat names, despite the puppy-focused title. Although I’m currently a crazy dog lady, my first love was a cat. I still consider myself one of you. Honestly, a more accurate title for this blog would be “I Still Want More Puppies and a Cat or Two, But My Dogs Would Chase Them so I Can’t Actually Have a Cat.” Catchy, right? I totally should have gone with that one.

If our pets ever learn to read, we’re all in big trouble…

You know, if our pets could read what we say about them online, they might be both flattered and horrified. After all, we sometimes share their most embarrassing moments on the Internet for all to see.

I’m pretty sure that if Bella and Tavish could type, they’d start a blog about me in retaliation. I shudder to think of the photos they would post for Wordless Wednesday. (They’re cute when they sleep, but I’m a drooling mess.)

Let’s just all be thankful that our pets can’t read, okay? Here are a few posts that made me smile in the month of July. Feel free to read them aloud to your illiterate pets:

Your Friday cute: Double or puffin?

I know I’ve been remiss with my weekly link roundups lately, so today’s is packed full of linkage to send you smiling into the weekend…

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Thorin Croakenshield and Bilbo Waggins. (Bonus: Meowly Cyrus and J.R.R. Tolkitten, courtesy of this pun-filled link. I won’t lie – I’m kind of annoyed at myself for not coming up with the latter.)
  2. Speaking of puns, please enjoy the whole enchihuahua!
  3. I want to throw a puppy party. I don’t know what the occasion will be, but the theme will (of course) be puppies. Who’s in?
  4. I have a tendency to declare that something is my spirit animal quite often. Like once a week. Or twice a day. Anyway, I would declare this frog my spirit animal, but I think it would be more appropriate to appoint him my new life coach.
  5. Take note: this is how you make an entrance.
  6. Holy cuteness, Batman! It’s a puffin chick! I wonder what they’ll name her. Perhaps Arianna Puffington? Or Hillary Puff? (Note: I decided to Google “Puffington Post” to see if it such a thing existed, and if so, if it was a blog dedicated to puffins. In case you’re wondering, the answers are: yes… and a resounding NO.  It’s more likely to appeal to hardcore fans of this movie. I naively did not see that coming.)
  7. Speaking of baby puffins, apparently they’re actually known as pufflings. Amazing. (From this same link, I also learned that a group of ferrets is called a business, which may be the coolest name for a group of animals ever. It might even edge out a grumble of pugs. I need to think on it.)

Anyway, putting that important debate aside for a moment (stay tuned), it’s time for this week’s video:
