I just came across this great set of ads from the Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. The ads are part of the Fix at Four campaign, which is designed to educate people about the proper age for spaying and neutering your pets. (Well done, Best Friends. Bob Barker would be proud.)
Did you know that a kitten can become a mother at four months of age and a puppy at six months? Kind of crazy, when you think about it. (Take it from me, I adopted an unwed teen puppy mother off the streets. After Bella had her puppies, some cruel person kept the puppies and dropped her off at the shelter – and she was barely a year old at the time, maybe less.)
These ads are extremely clever, funny and effective. I think this one is my favorite (based on the Creek connection, of course).
Although the blog has a very pro-puppy name, I love all sorts of animals (cats included… you may recall my weakness for sleepingkittens). So, today’s No Frown Friday post is dedicated to the big cats out there…
As always, we begin with a dose of punny: Leopardo DiCatrio, Cheetah Rivera, Jaguar-ren Beatty and Puma Thurman. (P.S. Apparently my punning abilities qualify me for a job naming crappy wine. Who knew?)
Those big cats must be born with good PR skills. They know how to make the rounds on the talk show circuit and ambush us with epic cuteness. Don’t believe me? Check out this fuzzy leopard cub on Letterman… and this baby cheetah (with bonus puppy BFF) on the Today Show.
Speaking of cheetahs, this little guy could have quite the career on the talk show circuit doing bird impressions.
Tigers plus lions equals… ligers! Liger cubs adopted by a dog equals more cuteness than you can shake a stick at. (Where did that expression come from? Who is going around shaking sticks at everything? I had to find out.)
Never fear, I saved the most ferocious for last…
Hmmm… I guess I let the roar fool me. Or perhaps the fact that the kitten decided to hang out in a boot just wiped out my ability to think logically. Either way, I can’t fight the cute. Besides, I bet most house cats think they’re king or queen of their “jungle” anyway. (Seriously though, if you want to learn more about big cat conservation, go here.)
I’ve got a busy weekend ahead, but I do plan to catch the Tony Awards on Sunday. Anyone else? Whatever your plans for the weekend, I hope you’re more successful than this guy.
Well, the world obviously has a case of wedding fever this week. Who am I to resist? After all, I did celebrate my own anniversary yesterday. I did, however, resist getting up at the crack of dawn to watch the royal wedding and will catch up via DVR instead. (DVR – best invention ever?) However, I bet I could have been convinced to get up if I was invited to a celebration like the snazzy one over at Bark’n About. Anyway…
Your punny pet names: Cat Middleton was perfect for the theme, but it seemed too easy (though I really hope someone has a cat with that name). So, I also give you… Camilla Barker Bowles.
Have you been to a wedding where the couple’s pet(s) played a role? As previously discussed, Bella does not travel well. Thus, we let her snooze at home during the festivities. It would have been fun to have her there though. I’ll just have to look at these best dogs and pups of honor instead. Prefer to let your pets be the star of the show? Check out this canine wedding photo over at Doggie Stylish or learn about a recent cat wedding in London via Life with Cats.
Finally, did you see this fantastic Corgi ad? (It was to convince people to upgrade to HD coverage of the royal wedding – irrelevant now, but still adorable.)
As I learned from Kevin Arnold, we all get by with a little help from our friends. So this Valentine’s Day, make sure to follow the Bro Code and perform any required wingman (or wingwoman, wingdog, etc.) duties that arise. Need some tips? Jesse the Jack Russell Terrier will show you how to be a good bro:
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. So, today’s No Frown Friday is dedicated to love – both puppy love and the other kind. I know some people aren’t fans of this holiday, but I’ve always kind of liked it. I think it stems back to my mom – every year she’d dig out the heart-shaped cake mold and make us yummy cakes. It was our annual tradition. Nothing better than eating those heart cakes with my family.
My hub’s managed to create some fun memories, too. However, I haven’t had much luck with the plants he’s sent me over the years! (I don’t think I inhereited the family green thumb, but I’m working on it.) In any event, it’s always fun. This year, we’re going to cook a nice dinner, drink some wine, and have a nice evening at home – though I’m sure Bella will try to squeeze her way in between us on the couch!
Today’s punny pet names are based on some famous lovers: Elizardbeth Bennett and Bark Darcy.
Check out these funny Valentines – my favorite manages to make reference to both Bill Cosby and Pudding Pops. How can that not be a winner? The one with the cat (you’ll see) was my personal runner up.
No time to buy a paper card? Choose one of these awesome ecards instead.
Has your dog always dreamed of playing Cupid? Sew DoggyStyle makes it possible.
Speaking of dogs in love, I really enjoyed this post over at Gardening with Wyatt – it includes a perfect video clip for the holiday!
I had a hard time deciding what video to share today, but I decided to go with some Snoopy:
If you want to watch the classic Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown, it’s on tonight! I can’t wait.
Whatever you’ve got planned this weekend… check out these great tips at Cat Chat for keeping your pets (both feline and canine) safe during the days of wine, roses and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate.
Speaking of cute, I love that the news team captioned them “adoptive parents” and embraced the idea that these animals are family.
Speaking of becoming an adoptive pet parent, I want to direct you to a wonderful post from Rachel Lauren Photography. It’s called “Before you buy that Christmas puppy…” and it should be required reading for anyone considering walking into a pet store.
As you may know, this week I have Dawson’s Creek on the brain. I’m not quite ready to move on. After all, we already saluted the Bev-Niner, so it’s only fair that Dawson’s Creek gets its due.
This week’s punny pet names come to you straight from Capeside: Dogson Leery, Jen Brindley, Pacey Litter (or for a bird – Pacey Twitter), Crow-y Potter, and Jack McFlea. (Dogson’s Creek… the next project from my punnyproductioncompany?)
The show should have just been named after Pacey instead. If you’re a Pacey fan, you owe it to your 1999 self to watch this hilarious video about Pacey-Con 2010.
I decided to see if there were any animals with Creek-related names available for adoption on Petfinder. Allow me to introduce you to Dawson, Pacey, and Joey… they’re looking for homes!
So, when I searched for “dawson’s creek puppy” (I do it for you, dear readers), I found this video. It’s a dog… swimming in a creek for the first time.
As you may have gathered from the last item above, my search for an animal-themed Creek video for today was not so successful. So instead, I give you dogs watching TV (the commentary by the person filming amused me, and I apparently like to watch animals watch things):
For some reason, these two terriers just made me smile (and not just because they are terriers… though I’m sure that helped). Anyway, I’m going to pretend it still relates to the Creek because they are the future dog version of Joey & Pacey… or something.
It’s time for another No Frown Friday! To paraphrase Forrest Gump, this week we’re talking about animals that go together like peas and carrots…
This week’s punny pet names would be perfect for your very own feline-canine odd couple: Felix Ungrrrr and Oscar Meowdison.
Speaking of odd couples, I enjoyed this slideshow of unlikely animal friendships. Some of these stories are familiar. Others are new. All are sweet. My personal favorite is the tale of Tarra the elephant and Bella the dog (not my Bella, but I do enjoy the coincidence). These two friends have even inspired a children’s book (link via Pet Project).
Sometimes animals take the odd friendship to the next level – forming an odd animal family. I got a little misty reading this sweet tale of a chihuahua who adopted nine kittens. (The mama dog’s name is Buttercup… double coincidence alert! That was the name of my first kitty.)
Who says only birds of a feather stick together? These odd couples have the right idea – it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Have a great weekend, darlings!
It’s almost June, and wedding season is upon us. In fact, I’ll be attending my first wedding of the season this weekend. With that in mind, this week’s No Frown Friday has a matrimonial theme:
This week’s punny pet names are inspired by famous wedding dress designers: Vera Fang and Monique Droolier.
Maybe our two esteemed dogsigners (dog designers?) above made the clothing for these puppy wedding photos (complete with tips for any budding dog wedding photographers out there). These pups are all decked out for the big day; however, if your dog’s not the formal type, there’s always this tuxedo t-shirt.
Can I go back in time and use one of these dog wedding cake toppers on my wedding cake? I am kind of amazed that I didn’t realize these were out there, and even more amazed that I didn’t insist our cake have mini-Bellas on top. (Bonus: Here’s another slideshow of 15 adorable cake toppers – only one of which is pup-related.)
Weddings are beautiful… the supreme expression of that beautiful sentiment that one must put rings on things one likes. Ergo, here’s a puppy doing the Single Ladies dance.
I love how bored he looks.
What have we learned? Always carry a supply of those rings from the carnival ring toss game, and throw them at things you like. (For larger items, consider hula hoops.) Under the Sasha Fierce Accord of 2008, those things are then yours. Anyway, have a fantastic weekend, my fellow pup fans.
