BlogPaws Episode 4: I’m off to meet the widgets

Now, where was I?  Oh, yes… cheesecake.  Good stuff, right?  Anyway, after thoroughly enjoying that cheesecake and chatting with a few others during the break, it was time for afternoon sessions.  During each time slot, there were four breakout sessions to choose from.  Sometimes, it was a tough choice.  At other times, I didn’t have to think twice.  You will probably not be surprised to learn that the title of this next session called to me like a siren to a sailor.

A punny title?  Pop culture references?  How could I say no?

This session was presented by Lauren Spencer from Fetching Communications.  We learned about various widgets (stand-alone applications that you can embed on your blog to create a more dynamic and interactive experience for your readers – check out Something Wagging This Way Comes for list of the links we got from Lauren that day).  It seems like there are widgets for everything – including Facebook (so readers can like your page… hint, hint), Twitter, and YouTube.  You can even create polls and surveys for your site.

Just make sure not to engage in widget overload – too many widgets and your page begins to look like Times Square.  Your reader won’t even know where to start.

Anyway, there was one widget in particular that piqued my interest: embedding a slideshow from Flickr.  Lauren showed us how to do this using Flickr’s own app, as well as third-party applications from Flickr’s App Garden.  I made the one below using pictobrowser:

The Chronicles of Cardigan meets Something Wagging

Cool, right?  I have a feeling I’ll be using this tool a lot in the future – I was wondering how to create slideshows on the blog, but was a bit too lazy to figure it out myself.  So thank goodness for punny sessions. The session even came with an unexpected bonus: I finally got to meet Elizabeth, Jon Farleigh and Dewi from The Chronicles of Cardigan!

Now that my brain was playing songs from The Wizard of Oz on a permanent loop, it was time to head to yet another session – the last one of the day, in fact.  For this final session, I chose to attend “StumbleUpon: How to Create, Share and Discover Great Content.”  I’d heard about StumbleUpon but wasn’t really familiar with how it works.

Apparently part of the concept is based on “unexpected relevance,” which I thought was interesting.  According to our presenter (from StumbleUpon, of course), it’s the second biggest social media referrer online in North America.  So you know… kind of a big deal, I suppose.  This was yet another technical session – there are a variety of free tools and widgets (as well as paid ones) available.  If you’re interested, you can check them out here.  Any of you use it?  What do you think?

That closes the book on the sessions from Day 1.  However, the day wasn’t over yet… up next, I’ll tell you all about my evening.  It included popcorn, candy, a movie, puppies, and new friends.  After that, I’ll give you a recap of Day 2, and finally some closing thoughts.  The end is in sight!

If you’re confused, just tilt your head

It’s a three-day weekend!  I could not be happier to have an extra day off.  That being said… it’s time for some Friday linkage!

  1. This week’s punny goodness is inspired by a fantastic book I just finished.   In honor of the entertainment she provided during my brief hurricane-induced power outage, I give you… Catty Griffin.
  2. I would like to request that all sheet music do this from now on… not too much to ask, right?
  3. The face on this Corgi reminded me of Bella.
  4. Remember Edward Peanutbutterhead? Well, it appears that he has some competition.
  5. Eating peanut butter is one thing, but I wouldn’t recommend stealing it from the trash.  You might end up like this guy.
  6. You know I’ve had BlogPaws on the brain lately.  You may enjoy seeing these cute pets who were in attendance.
  7. Speaking of… there have been some pretty fun BlogPaws post over at Something Wagging This Way Comes this week.  Check them out!
  8. If you just can’t get enough BlogPaws (and can’t wait for my posts… they’re coming, I promise), then I have the link for you. Might I suggest you start with this great post from This One Wild Life about the ACES Pet Rescue Workshop?

Finally, just because it’s Friday… have some head tilts, or as we like to call it at my house: “making the puppy face.”

Friday I’m in love (with BlogPaws)

Today, I’m at BlogPaws!  However, I couldn’t just leave you hanging on No Frown Friday.  It just wouldn’t be right if I didn’t send you into the weekend as usual… so let’s get to it!

  1. As always, we begin with a pun… Tina Spay.  (I’m obviously in 30 Rock withdrawal.)
  2. Speaking of wordplay… if I ever need a Cat Scan, I hope I get this type.  Way better than the traditional kind.
  3. Speaking of Cat Scans… if all goes according to plan, I’ve met some of my favorite bloggers by now.  (If you’re there… say hi!)  Maybe I will ask those who are vets if this cartoon actually depicts a teaching animal hospital.  I have a feeling that it does not.
  4. Next, I give you cats with mustaches.  No wordplay or brilliant segue needed.
  5. Apparently the MTV Video Music Awards are this weekend.  (Kind of funny, considering that I can’t remember the last time I saw a video on MTV.)  Anyway, I would be much more likely to watch the VMAs if they really did have puppies on hand to impersonate the various presenters and winners.
  6. Finally, what happens if your toddler decides the dog needs a new ‘do?  Hilarity, that’s what.

No video today – it’s been a crazy week!  However, if you aren’t at BlogPaws, but want to keep up with the action, you can follow me on Twitter.  (I’m not sophisticated enough to blog from the event itself, but Twitter I can handle.)  I’ll be using the hashtag #Blogpaws.  Stay tuned for a full blog recap next week.  Happy weekend!

Prepare for a stampede of cuteness!

This time next week, I’ll be at BlogPaws. So exciting! Must… focus… on… present….

  1. Weekly punny goodness: Pablo Picatso and Salvador Doggie.
  2. To follow up on last week’s post, I implore you to enjoy more cats in hats.
  3. Dear Internet: You are awesome. The Adventures of Milo & Otis totally needed a remix involving Jay-Z.  I humbly request you come up with a similarly entertaining remix for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, The Fox and the Hound and/or Oliver & Company.  Thanks!
  4. Speaking of dogs named Otis… check out this skydiving dog!
  5. Have you ever wondered why your dog sometimes wants to snuggle, but other times would prefer to be alone?  This handy chart breaks it down for you.
  6. You know Bella’s an art lover (sometimes to a fault).  You know we love The Bloggess.  So I’m sure you’ll understand why this ad over there cracked me up.
  7. Maybe this little guy could be an artist.  Is there a market for mud paintings?
  8. This next link reminded me of the brilliant series “Pet Adoption Videos that Don’t Make Me Want to Kill Myself” over at Will My Dog Hate Me. It’s an adorable video promoting pet adoption… accompanied by a catchy tune and a bonus pup in PJs!  Fantastic.

My favorite part of today’s video might be the guy in the background
saying “puppy puppy puppy puppy.”  Seriously.  It reminds me of that
addictive Puppy Woof Woof video for some reason.  Good times.

That’s all for today, folks.  Have a fantastic weekend, and don’t forget to swing by and Like our new Facebook page!  Bella approves.

Cats in hats & dogs in blogs…

Lots of good stuff for you today….

  1. Your punny pet names for the week… wait, I need to put on my punglasses first.  That’s better.  In honor of last night’s So You Think You Can Dance finale I give you… Mary Purrphy.  (Bonus SYTYCD-related name in need of no alterations: Cat Deeley.)
  2. Multiple cats in multiple hats?  Dr. Seuss would be proud.  (Since we’re kicking things off with some feline links today… here’s a bonus quiz about purring.)
  3. I have a feeling Dr. Seuss would have also liked these adorable doughnuts decorated to look like cats.  Okay, I don’t really have that feeling.  I just like them.  That’s enough, right?
  4. Speaking of cat-shaped food (not to be confused with actual cat food), check out this cool jewelry shared on under the blanket.  Love the whimsy.
  5. Speaking of finding lost pets (I sort of was, I promise… visit blanket ID for a great and stylish way to keep your pets safe), viva la microchip!  This dog was reunited with his family a year after fatal car crash.
  6. Are you a pet blogger in addition to being a pet blog reader?  (I think it’s safe to assume you are at least a pet blog reader, right?  After all, you are here… reading my pet blog… but I digress.)  If so, hop on over to Rescued Insanity and join the discussion – how did your blog get its name?

As you know, I like to close things out with a video on Fridays.  In all honesty, I almost didn’t today because I just watched this video from No Dog About It and there’s no way I can compete… I can’t even tell you how much I loved it.  I cheered.  No joke.  So… you should go watch that.  Really.

In any event, I’ll still give you a video, since one can never have enough cute.  I think that this will be Bella’s reaction when she finds out she needs to have her nails clipped and get a bath this weekend:

(via Life with Dogs)

However, although Bella tries to hide when she senses a bath on the horizon, I’m just glad she hasn’t earned a black belt in bath avoidance like this guy.

In other news… two weeks until BlogPaws!  Will I see you there?

I’m so excited… I’m so excited…

I’m all over the place today… I feel like Jessie Spano on a caffeine pill bender.  (I know, Jessie.  I’ll never get into Stanford at this rate either.)   Anyway…

  1. Your punny pet names:  Jessie Spaniel and Elizabeth Barkley.
  2. Shameless self-promotion time again!  Go visit my cupcake blog and enjoy some chocolate chip and mint chocolate chip cupcakes.
  3. Penguins graduating are adorable.  I hope the penguins went retro and played the Bayside High song during commencement.
  4. The Canadian Prime Minister adopted a kitten.  This kitten is adorable.  That is all.
  5. For your consideration: this pup is gunning for an Oscar nom with his dramatic interpretation of playing dead.
  6. A chimp bottle feeding a tiger cub?  All in a day’s work.  If that’s not enough cute for you, go check out these Animals with Stuffed Animals.  I have a feeling that’ll do the trick.
  7. Add to your wish list: Dog Lips!

Finally, it’s not quite the Zenniest moment of Zen ever, but it’s pretty close:

I'm going to BlogPaws 2011 badgeIn other exciting news…. I’m going to BlogPaws!  Who else will be there?  I can’t wait…

    No one expects the Corgi-fication

Okay, so I know I’ve focused on Corgis before (they were even the subject of my first breed spotlight and inspired me to dream up a detective show starring a Corgi/Jack Russell named Cojack).  However, the Internet has made it very clear that it’s time for another Corgi roundup.  You wouldn’t believe how much Corgi stuff keeps popping up on my screen.  It’s obvious that the universe wants me to give in to the Corgi-fication.  Who am I to argue?

    1. First up, your punny pet name: Ernest Corgnine.
    2. Corgis are pretty darn cute on their own.  (Need proof?  Visit the Chronicles of Cardigan.)  That being said, Corgi mixes are no slouches either.  Check out this gallery of Corgi mixed breeds.  Still want more?  Here you go.
    3. If I was matriculating at Hogwarts, I’d ask the Sorting Hat to place me in Gryffincorg.
    4. Make way for ducklings… especially when they’re following a Corgi around.
    5. Based on the ears alone, I think I’ve found Bella’s Corgi doppleganger.
    6. I’ve never seen a dog who liked the vacuum as much as this guy.
    7. This Corgi won’t come in without an invitation… is he a vampire or just really polite?

I can sum up this week’s video in four words.  Those words?  This. Is. The. Life.

    (via Cute Overload)

If you’re not as relaxed at that pup, I bet you need a way to unwind.  Might I recommend you enjoy a moment (several moments, actually) of Zen, Corgi style?

That’s one way to stay cool…

Happy Friday! I hope that you have not yet melted from the heat… if you have, then I ‘m not sure how you’re reading this, but I congratulate you on your skills.  Anyway, here we go…

    1. Your punny pet names for the week:  PetMe White and Jimmy Falhound. (Not my best work, but they are relevant to the links below.  Here’s a bonus, however: meet Ferris Mewler, feline friend of hilarious individual The Blogess.  That cat’s Eric Northman impression is off the charts… guess we know who would play Ferris Mewler in a made-for-TV movie.  Alexander Skarsgard all the way.)
    2. Wondering what’s new over at my cupcake blog? (Probably not, but I hope you’ll indulge my occasional desire to self-promote.)  If you’re hungry, perhaps these vanilla M&M cupcakes with chocolate buttercream will satisfy you.
    3. Sorry about that cupcake tangent… will you forgive me if I give you 20 dogs slow dancing to Boyz II Men?
    4. No?  Well… how about if I told you I can predict exactly how excited your dog will be to see you based upon how long you’ve been gone?
    5. Still not satisfied?  Man, tough crowd.  If Betty White hanging out with a beluga whale (yup, they’re buds) doesn’t do it, I’m out of ideas.

So, we’re cool now, right?  Because once I linked to a video of a gosling, and had to clarify that I did not mean Ryan Goslng – it was a sad day for all, and I wished I’d been able to share a video of Gosling with a gosling instead.  I don’t have that today, but I have something even better.  Ryan Gosling and his dog (who happens to be rocking a mohawk) just hanging out on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

It’s the little things.  You know, like a dog with a mohawk.  It is important to stay cool, after all.  Anyone else tried out this cut?

    Happy weekend!

Harry Potter & the Deathly Howls

Tomorrow, I will be going to see the last Harry Potter movie.  I’m not going to lie… I almost wanted to put off seeing the movie so that it’s not really over.  That being said, I’m going to see it anyway.  I can’t wait!

      1. It’s not the first time we’ve given some Friday love to Mr. Potter and crew.  I’m sure it won’t be the last.  I already gave you a few punny names based on the series (some of my better work, I think).  Although I doubt I can top my previous Dogwarts creations (Headmaster Albus Puppledore and his star students Hairy Plotthound, Grrr-mione Granger, and Ron Fleasley), I’ll give it a shot.  I offer Godric Gryffindog, Helga Hufflepup, Rowena Ravenpaw, and Salazar Snifferin.  It makes me want to adopt a quartet of pups and buy them collars in their House colors.  (Also… if I was into reptiles, I’d totally have to name one Severus Snake.)
      2. As you can tell, I find this whole experience a tad bittersweet.  Luckily, I’m not the only one – Jimmy Fallon knows where I’m coming from.
      3. I love a good corn maze.  Note to my local corn maze creators: I think I just found the perfect model for you to use this year.
      4. This collection of Harry Potter viral videos is like a Butterbeer for the eyes and ears. (That sounds painful, but I promise I meant it as a good thing.  I’m not sure my simile is working.)  Um, also… you should probably do yourself a favor and watch this song about Deathly Hallows set to Beyonce’s “Halo.”
      5. Speaking of Butterbeer, did you know that you can make your own?  It’s some tasty stuff.
      6. I’m dying to make some Butterbeer cupcakes and/or Golden Snitch cake pops… perhaps these will be making an appearance on I Still Want More Cupcakes in the future.  (Thanks to Hey Love Designs for the tip!)
      7. You know I love Garfield.  As a result, I am obsessed with this Gryffindor Garfield cake.  I think I need to be friends with the person who requested this combo.
      8. Did you know that Harry Potter stars Imelda Staunton, David Tennant and Miranda Richardson have a history of helping dogs?  Awesome. (Thanks to DogTipper!)
      9. Maybe that’s why these dogs (and cats) love Harry Potter so much.  (These pups too.)

So, apparently lots of people have taught their dogs tricks based on the spells in the Harry Potter universe.  I have to be honest, this idea had never occurred to me.  Just goes to show, I’m no visionary.  I think this one was my favorite… it’s got some style:

With that, I send you into the weekend… who else is seeing Harry Potter?  If you’ve already seen it, what did you think?
