Play it cool… real cool…

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!  I have a few interesting items to share with you this morning, including two great causes and a big thank you to some pet blogging pals.

First, I’d like to highlight this week’s cause at Be the Change for Animals – saving dogs from hot cars.  Last month, I wrote a post about this topic after reading a tragic story about a careless owner and a very unlucky dog.  The title of the post should give you a clue about my feelings on the subject:  Horrible woman does terrible thing… and now I’m angry.I encourage you to check out the ways you can help on the Be the Change for Animals site.  You can also find more information at My Dog is Cool.  It’s important to know the facts, as well as what you should do if you see an animal in distress.

Next, check out Bocci’s Beefs for some information about International Homeless Animals Day, which takes place Saturday, August 21.  The goal is to raise awareness about pet overpopulation.  Personally, I take Bob Barker’s daily advice to heart (I loved the Price is Right as a kid), and always have my pets spayed or neutered.  It’s the responsible thing to do.  Bocci has taken the lead in organizing something among the pet blogging community, and is asking for suggestions regarding how we can help our local shelters and rescue groups.  Swing by and check out the discussion (or add some ideas of your own).

Finally, I want to say thank you to House of Carnivores and Arwen’s Pack for giving us another awesome award – I really appreciate it!  Apparently we are in a mutual appreciation society – I just gave an award to both of them as well.  Thanks again to you both.

This time, I’ll just encourage you to check out my two earlier posts (here and here) passing on awards and highlighting some fun new blogs.  And, as always, I encourage you to check out my blog list at right… I have linked to many fantastic pet blogs in the Puppy Love category for your reading pleasure.

Until next time, fellow pup enthusiasts…

Bella’s serious face

[Update (1/16/11):  The PAWS Program is no longer at American Humane.  However, you can read up on its current status here.]

Every now and then, I get serious for a moment.  Today is one of those days.

When you give your heart to a dog, you get so much in return.  In addition to unconditional love, a furry friend (like my Bella) provides companionship, comic relief and so much more.  Seeing my pup after a long day always makes me smile, and snuggling with her while sharing my troubles helps melt away the stress of the day.

We always talk about rescuing animals, but sometimes an animal rescues its person.  I read a moving story yesterday courtesy of the lovely folks over at FIDO Friendly Blog called “The Dog Who Saved Me From Abuse.”  The author tells the story of how adopting Baby (a Chiweenie – great breed name, right?) changed her life.   She was stuck in an abusive relationship with no way out – at first, Baby gave her an excuse to get out of the house, and then Baby’s unconditional love helped the author survive and find the strength to leave.  It’s an inspirational tale, and I hope you will take a moment to read it.  Grab some tissues.  In fact, you may want to have your pup handy – I know I needed a Bella hug when I finished reading.

The post also contains information about a great program that I want to share with you.  It’s called the Pets and Women’s Shelters Program (aka the PAWS Program).  American Humane developed this program to encourage domestic and family violence emergency housing shelters to allow residents to bring their pets with them.  (This post is getting a bit long, so you can find the remainder after the jump.  I have lots of info to share with you today.)

Say hello to your Boston for me

Welcome to this week’s No Frown Friday… it’s time for another breed spotlight!  This week’s focus is on an adorable breed that I like to think of as the James Bond of puppies – always in black tie and ready for a formal occasion – the Boston Terrier.  Given this introduction, I need a video of a penguin and a Boston Terrier hanging out, stat.  Does such a thing exist?  Anyway…

  1. Your punny pet names for the week:  Boston Powers (he’s an international dog of mystery) and Bark Wahlberg (a Boston native… who talks to animals).  (I know, I know… I’ve linked to that clip before. I can’t help myself.)
  2. Enjoy Boston Terrier puppy overload by watching this collection of videos.
  3. I also recommend checking out this adorable Boston Terrier cartoon over at Draw the Dog.
  4. If you’re feeling confident, why not test your Boston Terrier IQ?

And of course, here’s this week’s featured video offering (which inspired the theme of this post):

(via Pet Sugar)

Have you fallen in love with this breed yet?  If so, consider adopting a Boston Terrier – I hear that some pups even come complete with their own built-in formal wear.  (Not all Bostons are black & white… but they are all adorable!)

I have to stray from the theme for a moment… but I cannot wait to share this picture of a zebra/donkey hybrid with you.  It’s called a Zedonk!  (Since zebras are black & white, let’s just all agree it fits into the theme that way, okay?)  Cute, and a pretty awesome name… seemed like the perfect way to close out this post and send you into the weekend.  Hope it’s puptastic!

Roscoe P. Coltrane

In this case, the P stands for Puppy.

You may remember when Bella had her first canine guest in our new house… his name was Roscoe, and Bella didn’t exactly make him feel welcome.

While visiting family this weekend (sans Bella… her carsickness is the stuff of legend), I had the opportunity to spend some more time with Roscoe, who is another rescue dog.  He’s an absolute sweetheart.  I hope you enjoy these photos of him… I couldn’t stop snapping pictures of this cutie!

Forget about Monday for a minute…

I think you should cure that impending case of the Mondays by watching the video below.  It will make you smile.  (Full disclosure: I did get a little weepy towards the end.  It’s okay though – they were tears of happiness.  Also, I am a chronic crybaby.)

From the lovely folks at the Nevada Humane Society…

Doesn’t this just make you want to run out and rescue a pup or ten?

(If you want some more warm & fuzzy feelings, Life with 5 Dogs recently posted a great poem about a rescue dog.)

When he jumps high, he flies like a wild eagle…

Anyone else remember Snoopy’s foray into the world of dance?  I loved It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown.  My mom taped it for me when it was on TV, and I definitely made good use of that VHS.  While we’re on the subject, I’d like to share a bit of random trivia I just discovered – the voice of Lucy in this special was none other than our very own Stacey “Fergie” Ferguson, she of Kids Incorporated fame (and the Black Eyed Peas, of course… but she’ll always be the girl from Kids Incorporated to me).

So… that’s my roundabout way of introducing the topic for this week’s No Frown Friday.  No… not Fergie.  Today, we’re focusing on Beagles!  It’s half of Bella, after all.  Let’s get to it:

  1. Your punny pet names for the week are Beagle-inspired, of course: Colin Howl, Ezra Hound and Bucky Scent.  (I was also about to make a Flock of Beagles joke, but Google revealed that I was far from the first to think of this pun.  Such is life.)
  2. For your Friday amusement, I direct you to this compendium of famous cartoon Beagles.
  3. I love the puppy parties at Paw Nation – click on over to watch a whole bunch of Beagle puppy clips.
  4. Feeling confident about your Beagle IQ?  Test yourself with this PetSugar quiz.

Finally, I’d like to leave you with the following dose of awesome:

Want your own Flashbeagle?  Find your local Beagle rescue – however, be aware that not all Beagles come outfitted with their own pair of leg warmers.

Have a puptastic weekend!

Share the love & rescue a pup

Blog the ChangeI recently learned about Blog the Change, and decided to participate today.  On July 15 (and three other times throughout the year), pet bloggers write about animal issues that are near and dear to their hearts in an effort to inspire others to get involved.  (For more info, go check out Be the Change for Animals.)

When I was deciding what to write about (and there are some really touching and interesting posts out there today), I found myself coming back to the issue of pet adoption.  As you may have noticed, animal rescue is a topic that pops up on this blog fairly regularly.  I can’t help it – it’s genetic.  My family is full of animal lovers.  As I was growing up, adopting pets in need was a regular occurrence.  Our rescued pups came to us from many places – neighbors moving away who couldn’t take their pet with them, owners who no longer wanted their pets and were considering getting rid of them, or the odd stray who loped into our lives and became one of the family.  Each of these pooches was a blessing, and I am happy that so many of them turned around three times and curled up in my heart.

While thinking about this topic today, I immediately thought of one rescue in particular (aside from my Bella, of course, whose rescue past I’ve shared before).  When I was a teenager, a stray named Romeo appeared in my aunts’ neighborhood.   Poor Romeo was malnourished, and at one point had suffered some injuries.  He was scared to let anyone near him.  It was a slow process, but day by day he made his way closer to the front porch and the people waiting to love him.  I found it so inspiring to hear about his progress, as well as the time and effort my aunts and uncle devoted to convincing Romeo that he would be safe with them.  I remember sitting on the front porch and trying to feed him so that he would see he could trust me as well.  Each time he took a step closer, it was a little victory.  When you looked in his eyes, you could see that he wanted nothing more than to have a loving home.  He just needed to overcome his fear of people in order to let himself be loved.  Lucky for Romeo, my aunts and uncle were patient and kind – accordingly, Romeo became a member of the family long before he ever set foot on that porch.  He was in need, and they were there to help.

For a variety of reasons, many pups (and other animals) end up homeless.  If you have love to give, I urge you to consider rescuing a pup in need.  Your love is a wonderful gift to give to a homeless animal, and the love you receive in return is priceless.  To find more information about pets in your area that need homes, please visit Petfinder.  (It’s how I found Ms. Bella!)

Can’t bring a pup home right now?  Consider donating your time instead.  There are many wonderful rescue organizations out there (including HART, the group that saved my Bella), and many dogs who want nothing more than people to love them.  The individuals who devote their time to these rescue groups are my heroes.  I hope you consider volunteering – maybe you will be able to help a lucky pup meet his match and find his forever home.  Finally, even if you can’t give your time but would still like to help, there are many other ways you can make a difference.

For more inspiring rescue stories, I encourage you to check out Last Chance Highway on Animal Planet.  These inspiring stories of rescued pets will tug at your heartstrings and help you clear those tear ducts out on a weekly basis.  You can also find many other inspiring tales at the Petfinder.com Foundation site, and at countless other locations on the interwebs.

In closing, I have one final argument in favor of rescuing a pup:  Bella.  You know she’s awesome.

She’s not ugly, she’s my puppy

It’s time once again for the World’s Ugliest Dog contest.  A new winner has been crowned.  Drumroll, please…

Princess Abby the chihuahua!  Here is her crowning moment:

Princess Abby looks like such a sweetie.  Though honestly, she’s nowhere near as ugly as the dearly departed Sam, arguably the most famous winner ever. (I once met another past winner, Elwood, at a pet expo.  He was an absolute sweetie.  His tongue reminded me of Kandi, the chihuahua that lived with us when I was a kid.  We used to joke that her spring was broken, which is why her tongue stuck out all of the time.)

Although we all love talking about how cute our pooches are, clearly looks aren’t everything.  These “ugly dogs” are pretty beautiful at heart.  Many of the dogs that enter the ugly dog contest were lucky that someone adopted them – it’s not easy to find a home when you’re next to the traditionally and perpetually adorable.  So next time you are considering adding a furry friend to your family, remember that all pups need love, especially the ugly ones.

Working like… a human?

This Friday is Take Your Dog to Work Day!  Will your pup be digging out his best business casual attire and accompanying you to the office on Friday?  (Some dogs have taken full advantage of this opportunity in the past – check out the photographic evidence here.)  If you are interested in participating, I urge you to check out the TYDTWDay website to learn more about how you and your company can help shelter dogs by participating.

As you may already know, Ms. Bella is not really… portable.  Her tendency to get carsick from the gentle sway of the breeze outside means that she will not be hopping in the car to join us on our daily commute.  However, I like to think that we take her to work on those days when one of us works from home.  After all, when I work from home she tends to hang out under the desk in case her assistance is needed.

If you do decide to take your furry friend to the office with you, I recommend checking out this list of tips on how to make the day a success for you, your pup, and your colleagues.  Before your puppy punches his first time card, it’s important to be prepared.

Still not sure?  The video below provides some adorable and funny reasons you should consider participating:

If your pup gets his W-2 this Friday, consider entering your photo in the TYDTWDay photo contest.  Also, if you do participate, feel free to tell us all about it in the comments… stories and pictures are always welcome!

Happy Father’s Day!

A few quick links for Father’s Day:

  • Has your pet been asking you what to get their person for Father’s Day?
Here are some guidelines for your furry friend – Bella has already taken care of the first item on this list. She woke me up today instead of making her way to the other side of the bed.
  • If you’re missing your dad today, I’m sending you a big hug.  I was touched by these two sweet Father’s Day tributes, both with an animal connection.
  • Looking for a unique Father’s Day gift?  Here are a few gift ideas that also help our furry (or feathered) friends.  (I realize it might be a bit late for gift ideas for this Father’s Day… but you could always bookmark these ideas for a future gift for dear ol’ dad.)
  • Is your dad a pet lover?  For a unique gift, you could commission a portrait of his beloved companion.  Might I recommend JoeyTheDog Artworks?  (Also, sending a congrats to JoeyTheDog – the awesome portrait of my very own Bella made PetSugar’s home page today!)
  • I think a bit of humor is the perfect way to conclude this list – these Father’s Day cake wrecks are sure to provide a chuckle.

In closing, I’d like to send happy Father’s Day wishes to my own wonderful dad.  His grandpuppy would like to join in, and has requested I post this photo in his honor:

That’s Bella, wearing Dad’s trademark hat.  She wants to be just like you!  (Apologies for the green eye – my attempts at photo editing were unsuccessful.)

Happy Father’s Day!
