Harry Potter & the Deathly Howls

Tomorrow, I will be going to see the last Harry Potter movie.  I’m not going to lie… I almost wanted to put off seeing the movie so that it’s not really over.  That being said, I’m going to see it anyway.  I can’t wait!

  1. It’s not the first time we’ve given some Friday love to Mr. Potter and crew.  I’m sure it won’t be the last.  I already gave you a few punny names based on the series (some of my better work, I think).  Although I doubt I can top my previous Dogwarts creations (Headmaster Albus Puppledore and his star students Hairy Plotthound, Grrr-mione Granger, and Ron Fleasley), I’ll give it a shot.  I offer Godric Gryffindog, Helga Hufflepup, Rowena Ravenpaw, and Salazar Snifferin.  It makes me want to adopt a quartet of pups and buy them collars in their House colors.  (Also… if I was into reptiles, I’d totally have to name one Severus Snake.)
  2. As you can tell, I find this whole experience a tad bittersweet.  Luckily, I’m not the only one – Jimmy Fallon knows where I’m coming from.
  3. I love a good corn maze.  Note to my local corn maze creators: I think I just found the perfect model for you to use this year.
  4. This collection of Harry Potter viral videos is like a Butterbeer for the eyes and ears. (That sounds painful, but I promise I meant it as a good thing.  I’m not sure my simile is working.)  Um, also… you should probably do yourself a favor and watch this song about Deathly Hallows set to Beyonce’s “Halo.”
  5. Speaking of Butterbeer, did you know that you can make your own?  It’s some tasty stuff.
  6. I’m dying to make some Butterbeer cupcakes and/or Golden Snitch cake pops… perhaps these will be making an appearance on I Still Want More Cupcakes in the future.  (Thanks to Hey Love Designs for the tip!)
  7. You know I love Garfield.  As a result, I am obsessed with this Gryffindor Garfield cake.  I think I need to be friends with the person who requested this combo.
  8. Did you know that Harry Potter stars Imelda Staunton, David Tennant and Miranda Richardson have a history of helping dogs?  Awesome. (Thanks to DogTipper!)
  9. Maybe that’s why these dogs (and cats) love Harry Potter so much.  (These pups too.)

So, apparently lots of people have taught their dogs tricks based on the spells in the Harry Potter universe.  I have to be honest, this idea had never occurred to me.  Just goes to show, I’m no visionary.  I think this one was my favorite… it’s got some style:

With that, I send you into the weekend… who else is seeing Harry Potter?  If you’ve already seen it, what did you think?

    I don’t just stroll down memory lane…

Seriously, I don’t just stroll down Memory Lane anymore.  Sometimes it seems like I’ve purchased a nice little house there. At the very least, I’ve bought a vacation home in the neighborhood.  So… anybody else remember this animated short from Nickelodeon?

I do always wonder what Bella dreams about…

In case you’re wondering why I found this today… be prepared for another scary trip on my train of thought.  For some reason I started wondering if there were any videos combining dogs and Beverly Hills, 90210… which led me to this video of a dog reacting to the classic theme song.  Of course (?) that got me thinking about the Pound Puppies… so I watched this commercial for Pound Puppies Colorforms. (Remember those? I definitely had this exact set, as well as that Pooch on the Loose game… that thing was awesome.)  One of the related videos on the sidebar was the Nickelodeon animated short above… and thus I thought I should share it with you.

I also ended up watching a few other Nickelodeon shorts. It’s amazing how many of them I remembered!  I even found two favorites: “Housecats” and “The Cat Came Back.”  Apparently the secret word for today is nostalgia.

Hope you’re having a fantastic Sunday!

How I met your tortoise… and some Muppets

Another Friday is upon us… so you know what that means.  It’s time to send you into the weekend with a smile!

    1. As always, we begin with a punny pet name.  (It’s tradition, after all.)  This week: Jason Beagle and Marshowl Erickson (see #5 below).
    2. I’ve decided to follow that up with a little shameless self-promotion.  Check out the newest creation over at I Still Want Cupcakes.  I’m considering a whole summer series inspired by ice cream… suggestions are welcome!
    3. Ice cream got me thinking about ice cream cones, which then led to me thinking about the cone of shame.  So, um, what happens if your dog forgets he’s wearing a cone?  Hilarity.  (Cone of shame jokes are never going to get old, are they?  Seriously, that stuff is timeless.)
    4. Stick with me here… it’s random train of thought day.  (As are most days for me.)  This video of a dog (and cat) on a scooter caused me to exclaim “Dogs… on… wheels!” when I saw it.  (This video produced a similar reaction.)  Which of course got me thinking about Dogs… in… Space, followed by Pigs in Space, which ended with me looking up the premiere date for the new Muppet movie.  (November 23… I’m so there.  Who’s with me?  If you haven’t seen the trailers, I recommend you treat yourself by doing so now.  The Muppets plus Jason Segal… I could not ask for more.)
    5. Talking about Jason Segal reminded me how much I loved his performance of “Dracula’s Lament” in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  Of course someone made it into a video with the Count from Sesame Street… it’s things like this that give me faith in humanity.  Okay, not really…. but I do have a particular fondness for the Count.  In college my roommate and I would often just start counting Count-style (that was an odd phrase to type) for no reason whatsoever and break into fits of laughter.  Those were the days.
    6. Whew… sorry for all the randomness.  This is almost as bad as that day I shared my ramblings about Waldo the cat.

    Finally, in conclusion… here’s a dancing tortoise:

    (via Paw Nation)

After all that randomness, it just didn’t seem right to give you a video that was even remotely related to the disjointed ramblings above.  (Besides, who doesn’t love a tortoise video set to a catchy tune?)  Happy weekend!

So You Think You’re a Dog

It’s Friday!  Time to send you into the weekend with some happy, happy, joy, joy!  Let’s get to it…

      1. This week’s punny pet name is only for the most debonair of pups: Spaniel Craig.
      2. Anyone here watch Parks & Recreation?  If so, I have a treat for you: Dogs That Look Like Tom Haverford.  (I think this one might be my favorite.)
      3. Need more? Fine. Here’s some cats that look like Ron Swanson. (I love you, Internet.)
      4. I already shared this link on Twitter… but in case you missed it, I need to share it with you too.  I read it three times yesterday and laughed like a crazy woman each and every time: “And that’s why you should learn to pick your battles” by The Blogess.  I will be quoting this blog post years from now.  My friends will beg me to stop, but I won’t be able to.  Also, she has a cat named Ferris Mewler… could it get any better?
      5. A cat impersonating a dog? Yup, that happened.  A robot impersonating a dog?  That did too.
      6. Now for dessert, enjoy these cakes from the ’80s… er, I mean, ’80s themed cakes. I’m not asking you to stare at desserts that are two decades old, I promise.

From now on, I think we should dance our way into every weekend.  As an additional bonus, this video helps me forget about my dancing-related irritation over this week’s So You Think You Can Dance results show.  Anyone else?

(via Best Week Ever… which I keep accidentally typing as Vest Week Ever.  Note to self – come up with concept for that title.)

I figured I’d give you a quick dose of dancing dogitude to send you into the weekend, but if you’re not satisfied, go watch the world’s preeminent Chihuahua flamenco dancer do his thing.

Have a fantastic weekend (and join the Saturday Pet Bloggers Blog Hop, after the jump)!

Tomorrow is  Take Your Dog to Work Day!  As I discussed last year, Bella cannot come to work with me, but you know what they say – those who can, do; those who can’t, blog about it anyway!   So, even though Bella and I will not be participating (the closest we’ll ever get is when Bella hangs out under my feet when I work from home), that won’t stop me from sharing a few links!

Cleo over at Grouchy Puppy makes a convincing case for dogs in the workplace.  There are so many hardworking dogs out there helping to prove her point…. in fact, some of our blog friends – including One Pibble’s Wish – are ready to show off their typing skills!  Although there are some puppies who sleep on the job, you shouldn’t hold that against all potential canine employees.

Not sure if taking your dog to work is for you, or where to start?  Two Little Cavaliers has some tips for talking to your boss about this issue.  You can also check out this handy list of things to know before taking your dog to work (courtesy of BlogPaws) and some more great tips from the All Things Dog Blog.  Banjo & Millie also provided a wealth of information about the benefits of pets in the workplace – I encourage you to check it out!

Finally, I leave you with a video that seemed perfect for today’s post:

Are you taking your pup to the office tomorrow?

Too many awesome pet blogs, too little time…

As I mentioned yesterday, the fabulous blogs Something Wagging This Way Comes and Kol’s Notes recently gave this blog the Versatile Blogger Award.  So, I’m doing my duty and passing it along…

First and foremost, thanks again to Something Wagging and Kol’s Notes for sharing this award with me.  I highly recommend you pay them a visit – both blogs are great!  Bella and I are humbled to be in such company…

The rules: I have to tell you seven things about myself and then choose fifteen other blogs that deserve the award. (One set of rules said newly-discovered, and the other set just said versatile, so I’m making up my own rule and just choosing fifteen blogs I always enjoy… though it’s hard to narrow it down to just fifteen.  As you can see from the blogroll at right, I enjoy a lot of blogs!)

The last time I did something like this, I shared some puppy-related items about myself and some things about Bella. So, this time I decided to use my seven things to tell you a little more about me (the non-dog related stuff). Here we go:

      1. My favorite food is grilled cheese.
      2. I’m a voracious reader… I go through books at a pretty fast pace.  In fact, I just started a new book last night (the fifth book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries), and finished it this evening.  Hours need to be subtracted for sleep, work, commuting, and dinner, during which reading was not an option.  Another recent example? I finished all three Hunger Games books in 3 days.  When I get into a book, it’ll be gone in no time.  Tina Fey’s Bossypants is next in my sights.
      3. I never thought I’d want an e-reader, but I love my Kindle.
      4. I love writing song parodies (as you may have guessed from my recent post about the Pupperazzi).  Although I can’t really sing, I can’t help myself!
      5. I love outdoor concerts.  And wine.  Especially outdoor concerts that allow you to bring wine.
      6. I enjoy movies… and musicals.  Thus, I was in geek heaven yesterday when I went with a friend to see Stephen Sondheim’s Company at the movie theater.  So far this summer, I’ve already seen a production of Follies (apparently I’m in a Sondheim kind of mood lately), and will be seeing Wicked  and Mamma Mia again soon.  I’m sure there will be other performances in my future as well…
      7. I can relate pretty much anything back to Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210.  It’s one of my… talents?

Whew… hope you made it through my rambling.  Now, to the fun part!  I’m passing this award onto the following blogs:

Don’t count… I may have cheated a little. Honestly, this was way too hard and there were so many others I wanted to mention, so if I didn’t list you above, please don’t be offended!  Perhaps I need some sort of regular feature where I heap all sorts of compliments upon all you wonderful pet bloggers out there, so that I’m not leaving anyone out.  Stay tuned, my lovely readers – the wheels are turning on this one!

      Sealed with a kiss

Today, we’re talking about seals… or as I like to call them, “the puppies of the sea.”  They even call their little ones pups (well, humans call their little ones pups… I imagine that the seals have not adopted our terminology, but I digress).  Anyway, in case you hadn’t already guessed, I find seals pretty irresistible.  (Proof: I used to be obsessed with this animated version of Rudyard Kipling’s “The White Seal” and had a stuffed animal to back up that claim.)

Anyway… I have a pretty wonderful seal video to share with you today.  Recently, two seal pups that were rescued and rehabilitated by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center were released into the wild.  Their farewell scene was perfection:

      (via Jezebel)

Could those two get any cuter?

Sadly, even as illustrated in the cartoon I linked to above, the topic of seals is not without a sad component.  To learn more about the dangers faced by seals and what you can do to help, click herehere, and here.

      Jack of all trades

Although Bella’s exact specifications are unknown, I suspect (and many of you agreed) that she has some Beagle and Jack Russell Terrier in there (sometimes known as a Jack-a-Bee), and maybe a little Corgi too.  Since we’ve done No Frown Friday tributes to Beagles and Corgis, it’s time to complete the trifecta!

      1. First up, your punny pet name:  Jack Russell Crowe.
      2. Speaking of names, do you know how the Jack Russell Terrier got its name?  Once you know its origin story, click over to Dogster to learn more about this feisty breed or watch this clip from Dogs 101.
      3. In the epic battle of JRTs vs. sprinkler, who wins?  We do.
      4. Sprinkler defense aside… prepare for your heart to melt when you watch this video of a JRT mix nursing some abandoned kittens.
      5. JRTs can also play soccer and fly through the air with the greatest of ease. They really can do it all – remember Jesse?  (Sometimes, perhaps, they should be a bit less ambitious.)

The video below reminded me of Bella… she does this every morning and often additional times throughout the day:

      (via The Dog Files)

It seems like I’m always seeing JRTs in pop culture – which famous cutie is your favorite?  I’m partial to Wishbone (portrayed by the awesomely named Soccer), followed closely by Eddie from Frasier (played by the equally awesome Moose).

Think you could handle one of these adorable balls of energy?  Then get out there and rescue a Jack Russell!

      Speed Bump
      via Comics.com

Busy week, but I didn’t want you to think I forgot about you… I saw this comic today and it cracked me up.  I think Bella’s head really would explode if this were to happen.  As I was driving Bella to the vet this weekend, it occurred to me that, like the Simple Dog over at Hyperbole and a Half, Bella does not process the world well – sensory overload is always just around the corner.  A mailcat delivering squirrels would probably push her over the edge.  Though I suppose it would push me over the edge too… so let’s just hope the scene above never happens in real life.  It would be like that Futurama episode where we learn why the cats really put up with us.  I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords.
