Cat scratch fever

Although the blog has a very pro-puppy name, I love all sorts of animals (cats included… you may recall my weakness for sleeping kittens).  So, today’s No Frown Friday post is dedicated to the big cats out there…

  1. As always, we begin with a dose of punny: Leopardo DiCatrio, Cheetah Rivera, Jaguar-ren Beatty and Puma Thurman.  (P.S. Apparently my punning abilities qualify me for a job naming crappy wine. Who knew?)
  2. Those big cats must be born with good PR skills.  They know how to make the rounds on the talk show circuit and ambush us with epic cuteness.  Don’t believe me?  Check out this fuzzy leopard cub on Letterman… and this baby cheetah (with bonus puppy BFF) on the Today Show.
  3. Speaking of cheetahs, this little guy could have quite the career on the talk show circuit doing bird impressions.
  4. The cheetah cubs at the National Zoo make me smile.  That is all.
  5. Baby tigersLion cubs! A dog named Lion!  I’m swooning.
  6. Tigers plus lions equals… ligers!  Liger cubs adopted by a dog equals more cuteness than you can shake a stick at.  (Where did that expression come from?  Who is going around shaking sticks at everything? I had to find out.)

Never fear, I saved the most ferocious for last…

Hmmm… I guess I let the roar fool me.  Or perhaps the fact that the kitten decided to hang out in a boot just wiped out my ability to think logically.  Either way, I can’t fight the cute.  Besides, I bet most house cats think they’re king or queen of their “jungle” anyway.  (Seriously though, if you want to learn more about big cat conservation, go here.)

I’ve got a busy weekend ahead, but I do plan to catch the Tony Awards on Sunday.  Anyone else?  Whatever your plans for the weekend, I hope you’re more successful than this guy.

Things’ll go your way…

No theme today… just a hodgepodge of random things that I’m enjoying.  It seemed fitting to send you into this potentially gorgeous weekend with several random doses of silly:

  1. As always, we begin with punny pet names: Maya Rudog and Kristen Pig (totally what I would name a potbelly pig if I had one, by the way).  This week, they’re inspired by Bridesmaids, which I saw last weekend.  Hilarious. (As a result, I also have Wilson Phillips on the brain – in fact, I may have serenaded Bella with Hold On this morning.)
  2. All of this lovely summer weather has me thinking about days gone by… and these Jim Henson themed cakes are a perfectly sweet accompaniment to my nostalgia.  What I wouldn’t give to have my own heckling balcony, like Statler and Waldorf
  3. So… have you ever wondered what would happen if the dialogue in classic Peanuts comics was replaced with random tweets?  Probably not, but the answer is out there anyway – visit @Peanutweeter to find out.  I can’t do the hilarity justice here, but I especially liked this one.  (Speaking of Twitter, follow me at @wantmorepuppies and say hi!)
  4. Additional blast from the past brought to the present: Jem, narrated honey badger style.
  5. I’m going to indulge my nerd side here for a moment.  This blog post on punctuation made me smile… really.
  6. Animals riding on animals?  Sounds like a winner to me.  Enjoy a Chihuahua riding a tortoise and then let the cute continue with a baby sea lion riding a turtle.  Hmmm… why are turtles and tortoises the preferred method of transportation?  Given their lack of speed, you think they’d be hitching a ride instead.
  7. I have nothing witty to say about this next one, so here you go: cute bunnies jumping.
  8. This dog wants to swim with the dolphins, and this one wants to hang out with a cow.  It’s a crazy and adorable world out there.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the most random of them all?  Based on the following video, it’s probably me (at least today).  However, I cannot stop laughing when I watch it:

(via Jezebel)

Thanks for being such wonderful readers… if I could, I’d send you all a puppy bouquet.  I’m participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure tomorrow – it’s the first time I’m doing it as a runner!  Wish me luck, and have a weekend full of wags!

Jack of all trades

Although Bella’s exact specifications are unknown, I suspect (and many of you agreed) that she has some Beagle and Jack Russell Terrier in there (sometimes known as a Jack-a-Bee), and maybe a little Corgi too.  Since we’ve done No Frown Friday tributes to Beagles and Corgis, it’s time to complete the trifecta!

  1. First up, your punny pet name:  Jack Russell Crowe.
  2. Speaking of names, do you know how the Jack Russell Terrier got its name?  Once you know its origin story, click over to Dogster to learn more about this feisty breed or watch this clip from Dogs 101.
  3. In the epic battle of JRTs vs. sprinkler, who wins?  We do.
  4. Sprinkler defense aside… prepare for your heart to melt when you watch this video of a JRT mix nursing some abandoned kittens.
  5. JRTs can also play soccer and fly through the air with the greatest of ease. They really can do it all – remember Jesse?  (Sometimes, perhaps, they should be a bit less ambitious.)

The video below reminded me of Bella… she does this every morning and often additional times throughout the day:

(via The Dog Files)

It seems like I’m always seeing JRTs in pop culture – which famous cutie is your favorite?  I’m partial to Wishbone (portrayed by the awesomely named Soccer), followed closely by Eddie from Frasier (played by the equally awesome Moose).

Think you could handle one of these adorable balls of energy?  Then get out there and rescue a Jack Russell!

Duck, duck… pooch?

You may recall when we celebrated Squirrel Appreciation Day.  Today, we celebrate another member of the wild kingdom – ducks!  That’s right, May is National Duckling Month

  1. As usual, we begin with some puns: Duckleberry Finn, Duckbill Gates and Duck Rodgers.
  2. Speaking of puns, check out the report on this duckling rescue.  Puns galore!
  3. Although not punny, these duckling photos are pretty darn cute!  (Want more? Check out these cute ducks over at Winnie’s Dog Blog.)
  4. Looking for a way to celebrate ducklings this month?  Check out these cute kids’ books about ducklings – I always did like Jemima Puddle-Duck.
  5. Three words: duckling obstacle course!
  6. Wondering how I’m going to connect the dots (connect the ducks?) between ducks and puppies?  Wonder no more – check out what happens when a brave little duck meets a not-so-brave dog. (Apparently our pal Zona has also had her own duck-related trauma.)

However, don’t be fooled.  We know that dogs and chicks can be friends…  dogs and ducks can be too!

Speaking of dogs and ducks, this classic Donald Duck cartoon fits the theme perfectly.  Have a great weekend!

You otter know

The pun in the title of this post may have given away today’s topic…

  1. As always, we start with punny animal names:  Sam Otterston and Otter Preminger.
  2. Up next, an otter playing with rocks.  This video… well, it rocks.  (Insert rimshot here.)
  3. Then, a video of two baby otters learning to swim.  The cuteness is epic.
  4. Otters are the new cats?  You be the judge.
  5. As Dr. V will tell you, G is for Giant Otter.  Not familiar with the Giant Otter?  That’s okay – take a moment to gaze at some adorable babies.  Once you’ve sufficiently cooed over their cuteness, then check out these otter facts.
  6. We’ve been focusing on wild otters, but did you know that some people have otters as pets?  I had no idea.  (Anyone want to educate me here?  Otters are wild animals after all, so I’m kind of skeptical about the wisdom of having one as a pet.)  In any event, check out this video of these pet otters hanging out in their playhouse and this one of a pretty adorable otter named Sydney.

I leave you today with a video that captures some very excited otters in action – warning, if you have the sound on, I have a feeling your dog will do the head tilt.  Perhaps repeatedly.

If only she had Corgis carrying her train…

Well, the world obviously has a case of wedding fever this week.  Who am I to resist?  After all, I did celebrate my own anniversary yesterday.  I did, however, resist getting up at the crack of dawn to watch the royal wedding and will catch up via DVR instead.  (DVR – best invention ever?)  However, I bet I could have been convinced to get up if I was invited to a celebration like the snazzy one over at Bark’n About.  Anyway…

  1. Your punny pet names: Cat Middleton was perfect for the theme, but it seemed too easy (though I really hope someone has a cat with that name).  So, I also give you… Camilla Barker Bowles.
  2. Have you been to a wedding where the couple’s pet(s) played a role?  As previously discussed, Bella does not travel well.  Thus, we let her snooze at home during the festivities.  It would have been fun to have her there though.  I’ll just have to look at these best dogs and pups of honor instead.  Prefer to let your pets be the star of the show?  Check out this canine wedding photo over at Doggie Stylish or learn about a recent cat wedding in London via Life with Cats.
  3. Want more?  Okay, okay… here are 45 photos of doggie ring bearers.
  4. Larry the Downing Street Cat was all decked out for the royal wedding.  Help him celebrate by checking out this Royal Wedding CATs-travaganza Adoption event.  (It’s part of the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend happening today through Sunday!)
  5. Are you all about the Union Jacks?  The lovely under the blanket has rounded up some fantastic items with a British theme.
  6. Royal wedding not your style?  Perhaps you’ll enjoy these awesomely geeky weddings instead.

Finally, did you see this fantastic Corgi ad?  (It was to convince people to upgrade to HD coverage of the royal wedding – irrelevant now, but still adorable.)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Kiss the world

It’s Earth Day, so today’s video has a special message for you.  But first…

  1. I cannot take credit for today’s punny pet name.  It is genius:  Piggie Smalls.  Also genius and not of my creation: Ol’ Birdy Bastard.  However, I will add a few more names to the list: Notorious P.I.G. and Dr. Bray (for a donkey, of course).
  2. You must watch this audition for Britain’s Got Talent.  I love this woman. I love her dogs.  I love her dog sweater. Love. Her.
  3. Sometimes, you just need to watch cute animals.  Pick your poision: the San Diego Zoo’s Pandacam, the Edinburgh Zoo Penguin Cam, or the Shiba Inu Puppy Cam (it’s back!).
  4. If you prefer your cute in photos rather than videos, I give you this slideshow of pets snuggling with stuffed animals (includes bonus Gremlins reference – be still, my beating heart).

As you may or may not know, we celebrated Earth Day last year by turning the blog over to Captain Pug (obviously our hero and obviously going to take pollution down to zero – also, in case you were wondering, he is cuteness magnified, and he is fighting on the planet’s side).  I don’t know if I can top that… however, I did want to remind you to show the Earth a little extra love today:

(Hat tip to Subroto Bagchi for inspiring the title of today’s post.)

Thank cuteness it’s Friday

Happy Friday!  Let’s get to it:

  1. Shannen Doherty turned 40 this week.  I already punnified the names of the main characters, but that doesn’t mean today’s punny pet names can’t still have a 90210 theme!  There’s one for the birthday girl, of course: Shannen Do-birdy.  Why stop there?  I give you Chasin’ Priestly.
  2. Baby rhino.  ‘Nuff said.
  3. Remember our roundup of animal odd couples?  The mismatched cuteness continues with a deer and a goose, as well as a cat and a dolphin.
  4. What’s awesome?  Dogs with jobs
  5. Those dogs have to get to work somehow.  Check out these photos of 50 dogs at 50 miles per hour.

I’m sure that after a long week at work, those dogs want nothing more than to relax with a round of golf.  Observe:

Flashback: Celebrating the cone of shame

It’s almost the first anniversary of I Still Want More Puppies, so
I’m sharing some of my favorite posts with you this week.  The post
below originally appeared on August 13, 2010.  Hope you enjoy!

Speed Bump
(Speed Bump via Comics.com)
Ah, the cone of shame.  Immortalized by Dug, that awesome dog in Up.  Speaking of, how awesome was Up in general?  So much fun, and so many quotable lines in that movie.  (One of my faves?  “My name is Dug. I have just met you, and I love you.”  Very dog-appropriate.)  Anyway, it seems like someone I know mentions the cone of shame at least once a week.  Although Bella’s never had to wear one, the mere mention makes me smile.  For that reason, it’s the theme of today’s No Frown Friday.  Here we go…
  1. As always on Friday, I bring you punny pet names.  Given this post’s medical undertone, this week’s names are doctor-inspired:  Dr. Cliff Pupstable, Dr. Chewingsbone (I presume), and Doogie Howler.  You should be proud… I didn’t go for the more obvious Doggie Howser joke.  Oh wait, just did…
  2. Looking to spice up your decor?  You can even decorate with the cone of shame.  Check out this awesome dog bowl from me me me.  (Thanks to under the blanket for the link!)  Perhaps you’d prefer this cone of shame nightlight.  Want something a little more cozy?  How about these cone of shame pillows?
  3. You can even wear your own cone of shame – in t-shirt form.  Check out this cute shirt featured on PetSugar.
The pup in the video below battles his cone of shame, then battles a water bottle.  The result is magic.

(Seriously… how could that not make you smile?  If that’s not enough cuteness for you, go check out another fun cone of shame video over on phetched.)

Because this post was inspired by Dug, I’ll leave you with a joke from the movie:  “Hey, I know a joke! A squirrel walks up to a tree and says, ‘I forgot to store acorns for the winter and now I am dead.’ Ha! It is funny because the squirrel gets dead.”

Tell it to your dog – I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.

Flashback: Corgi, P.I.

It’s almost the first anniversary of I Still Want More Puppies, so
I’m sharing some of my favorite posts with you this week.  The post
below originally appeared on May 14, 2010.  Hope you enjoy!

For the first time, No Frown Friday will let one specific breed take the spotlight.  It seemed like I kept encountering Corgis this week.  It’s a fitting breed for my first breed spotlight – although we’ve been told Bella is a cross between a Beagle and a Jack Russell Terrier, we often get asked if she’s part Corgi.  She does have comically large ears and is low to the ground.  So either that combination results in a suspiciously Corgi-like creature, or there’s some Corgi in her family tree.  Anyway, on with the Corgification:

  1. While watching the Daily Show on Monday night, I saw this segment about Britain’s hung Parliament (that’s right, I keep up with non-puppy news as well).  While the Daily Show is reliably funny, this segment had a little something special – punny pet names!  Specifically, Winston Furchill (a Corgi, of course) and Margaret Scratcher.  Classic.  With that in mind, my own punny pet name this week is based upon one of the talented actresses Britain has bestowed upon us: Mischa Barkton.  (I kid, I kid… but did you know she was born in England?)
  2. If you love Corgis, there’s a cute blog out there called the Daily Corgi where  I found this picture of a Corgi rocking Bella’s signature pose.  Or maybe Bella has stolen a signature Corgi pose?  The plot thickens…
  3. Who am I kidding?  As if I could only post one new punny pet name.  In honor of today’s Corgi focus, I give you Billy Corgi-an and Corgi Cox.
  4. I just learned that a cross between a Jack Russell Terrier and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi is called a Cojack (info and plethora of adorable pictures here).  I now have an overwhelming urge to adopt one of these dogs, get him hooked on lollipops, and  train him to star in his own police drama.  It seems to me that their short stature makes them the perfect dog detective – they can sniff out clues while staying under the radar.  Also, they are short enough to simply trip bad guys when they try to make a run for it.  However, in order for this police drama to work, Cojack may need a taller dog as a sidekick so that he doesn’t miss any clues that are higher off the ground.
  5. In honor of the future interim Prime Minister, Sir Winston Furchill, here’s another noble Corgi, showing off his kibble dancing skills:

(via Cute Overload)

If you think a short and adorable dog might be for you and are interested in finding a Corgi of your very own, consider rescuing a Corgi.  I hear they are good sports and won’t be offended even if you constantly make fun of their height.  True story.

Have a good weekend, puppy pals!
