Winter is here… and with it, the possibility of snow. I’m not a snow lover – especially after last year’s Snowmaggedon – but even I have to admit that animals in snow are pretty darn cute.
- Your punny pet names for the week: Husky Springfield.
- The name of this Tumblr says it all: Pets Looking Out the Window at Snow.
- Cute Contest, championship round: cats and dogs in snow.
- Speaking of cute, this collection of photos is called “40 Photos of Dogs Freaking Out In Snow.” Could it get any better?
- Looking for a way to enjoy the winter with your pooch? If you’re really ambitious, you could create a snow dog like this one. Or maybe your dog wants to go sledding?
Bella’s never been sledding, but she does like running around in the snow. The snow was too deep to run in during last year’s Snowmaggedon, but Bella’s not one to give up that easily. Although she’s not technically a snow dog (like our pals at FiveSibes or the Thundering Herd), she does like to engage in what I think of as snow swimming:
Want to see more pups frolicking in the snow? Happy to oblige.
The one thing I do enjoy about snow is taking photos of Bella playing in it. It’s my first winter with my new toy, so we’ll see how they turn out. In the meantime, if you want to see some cool snow photos (easy pun intended), go check out Romping and Rolling in the Rockies. (Seriously, KB posts some amazing stuff.)
Does your pup like the snow? Tell me all about it in the comments! (And remember, winter’s not always easy on puppy paws – make sure you check out these tips for winterizing your wagging friend.)
Aww, Bella snow swimming was so cute! I had almost forgotten that I made a snow dog one year when I was a teenager and it snowed. I'll have to find a picture of it and scan it in to show you (this was before digital cameras).
The 40 pictures of dogs freaking out in the snow cracked me up! I couldn't help but think that Fiona and Abby playing bitey face in the snow could've been one of the pictures in it.
Elyse (and Riley)
Spike and Dru LOVE the snow and they do their share of snow swimming as well. They are only about 18" high so the 27" of snow we got right after Christmas gave them ample opportunity for snow swimming. They love to burrow their heads in and dig for dirt.
Thanks for all the entertaining links and Bella snow swimming is great.

Bella looks like she's having such a good time.
Shiva does love the snow, it gives her an excuse to jump instead of walk, apparently leaping into the air is much more fun. She isn't scared to dig her head right in and sniff for disgusting bits of garbage.
Thanks for all the great links!
Some days Lucy loves the snow. Other days, she wants nothing to do with it. We've got about 8 inches on the ground, which doesn't make for good snow swimming- but the other day we were out walking around the parking lot at the store, and she had a blast swimming through the snow plow snow piles!
Haha, cute video of Bella! Nico loves the snow. He does something similar to Bella but with a lot more bunny hopping! I think he thinks he can jump to where the snow is higher without realizing he'll just sink right back in.
PS – love that you have a blog shout out in the vid!
Ha! Nyxie will dig at your feet in the snow, like she's trying to unearth them. She gets a kick out of trying to "catch" the snowballs I throw for her, and when they explode at her mouth, she goes digging for the ball that must've landed somewhere…
Arwen's ironically never been a snow-lover. She's run and play in it, but it is very wet…
Love, love, love all these pics and the the video so cute! Dogs and cats are so funny in the snow. Unfortunately Poppet, when it snows, just thinks the yard is a huge litter box! Thanks for the todays smiles 🙂
We never get much snow here in Portland. In 2008 we got a lot of snow. Portlandlers called it the 'Snowpocalypse'. Haha, so much drama!
Wyatt
Bella is so cute in the snow! My dogs loves to play in the snow for a couple on minutes, but then her feet get cold, and she gets tired from having to pick her feet up so far! When her feet get cold, she puts one way up in the air and hopes on the other three. It is sad but cute!
You're up to your ears in snow…Glad you had a great time!
Elyse – I'd love to see your snow dog! I don't think I was ever that creative when playing in the snow.
Helen – I bet Spike & Dru are adorable when playing in the snow!
Rescued Insanity & Michelle – How could I forget about the jumping? 🙂 Bella does the bunny hop too. It always cracks me up. (And Michelle, I am nothing if not a shameless self-promoter… haha.)
Marianne – I hadn't thought about the snow plow piles. 🙂
ForPetsSake – That's too funny! When I was a kid, I had a pup (Scotti) that did the same thing with snowballs. She'd also wait under the eaves for icicles to fall and then would play with them like sticks.
Cate – Oh dear!
Wyatt – Snowpocalypse was one of the terms they tossed around for the storms here last year too, but I guess someone decided on Snowmaggedon. I don't remember being asked my preference… 😛
Garden Girl – Your poor pup! My cat used to do the same thing when her feet got wet.
Cooper & Lola – Thanks!
Guess I'm not the only pup that love snow!
I would like to invite you to accept the 'Stylish Blog' award, details can be found at http://www.sewdoggystyle.blogspot.com
XOXOXOXO,
Erika and Sebastian
We love the video!! Last years snow here was two feet or more and Holly had a time trying to walk through it. I have yet to master videos but got some pictures of her in it. She seems to like it now but when she first discovered it, I think it scared her! Lots of love, Debbie and Holly
She does look like she's swimming! Like the breaststroke! Have to say, Bella is brave for going through snow that deep – I couldn't, I'd be afraid of drowning in it!lol
Way to go, Bella. Snow is the best stuff possible.
Erika and Sebastian – Thank you for the award! You're too sweet. 🙂
Thundering Herd – Bella was inspired by all of you snow dogs!
It's hard to get around in that deep stuff, but she looks good trying. 🙂
