Easter is right around the corner. So, for this round of Blog the Change, Bella wanted to highlight a bunny-related cause. After all, she did have a bunny cousin – who she tried to lick during their first encounter. In any event…
Today, I (and Bella) want to talk about the Make Mine Chocolate campaign (organized by the Columbus House Rabbit Society). This cause was recently featured on Be the Change for Animals, and it’s a great one. Just as movies like 101 Dalmatians result in lots of children asking their parents for a Dalmatian, Easter has the tendency to result in requests for bunnies. While I’m all for adoption, I’m not in favor of families acquiring the pet of the moment and realizing that perhaps pet ownership was not really for them. If a family is prepared and knows what they are getting into – more power to them. However, the sad reality is that many of these bunnies end up in animal shelters or worse.
The key here is education – before adopting a rabbit, it’s important to know if a rabbit really is the right pet for you. (Sound advice before adopting any animal. Check out the cool Interactive Bun feature at Make Mine Chocolate to see if you’re bunny material. For those who get the Interactive Bun seal of approval, I recommend visiting All Things Dog Blog tomorrow to meet some wonderful bunnies from Petfinder – it’s an Easter Rabbit Adoptathon! Go here for details on how to participate.)
So, this Easter season, spread the word about Make Mine Chocolate. Commit to giving only chocolate (or cute plush) bunnies as gifts. Visit MMC’s website or the Facebook page to learn more. (After using that abbreviation, I momentarily drifted off to think about the Mickey Mouse Club. Anyone else remember The Party? Okay, back to the serious stuff… focus.)
Also, I realize it’s not technically part of the Make Mine Chocolate campaign, but I’d also like to take a moment to discourage giving children chicks and ducklings as well. First, they grow up. Chicks become chickens, and ducklings become ducks. Second, unless you’re Chandler and Joey, it’s just not a good idea.

Great Blog the Change post. We love rabbits and you are so correct, you have to be sure the pet you are getting is right for your family.I would love to have a rabbit, but it sure wouldn't be right here and I refuse to keep it in a cage.
That's so true and so right, it happens way to often. Thanks for spreading the word and trying to get the humans in the "right" mind!!!
Absolutely, agree! Thanks for posting about bunnies and chicks!
Your pal, Pip
Can't wait to see you tomorrow for the Easter Rabbit Adoptathon Blog Hop. This was a terrific article on that topic. Good job!
Great post about the bunnies. I remember when I was a little kid, the stores used to actually give away free baby chickens to anyone and that was a very bad idea. Luckily, someone came to their senses and ended it here. Lots of love, Holly and mom
Thanks so much for helping to spread the word about the plight of homeless rabbits! I know parents think a cute little bunny would be a great Easter present for their children, but it's really not. And I completely agree – unless you're Chandler and Joey, chicks and ducklings are not a good idea either! =)
Thanks for blogging the change!

We have two adopted guinea pigs that had become unwanted Easter presents. They are super sweet and have been a joy, but we got them after much research and thought about our lives and our family. Any gift of any animal at a holiday starts out with strikes against it. Love your post and you can be sure we are helping you to spread the word!!!
Thanks everyone!
Carrie – looking forward to the Adoptathon! Such an awesome idea.
Holly – I'm glad to hear that someone realized that idea was not a good one.
Amy – When I was writing this, all I could think about was the chick and the duck from Friends!
Ken and Laurie – I wish everyone was like you when they were considering getting a new pet!
Great topic! I volunteer at my local humane society and there are always many rabbits available for adoption.
I had fun playing "Accessorize Your Bun" – lots of info and a very cute format. Honey buns and chocolate … now I must have an afternoon snack!

I've been making mine chocolate for ages now 🙂
Great topic, just in time for Easter. Thanks for sharing.
I love chocolate! lol Seriously, you're so right about the importance of carefully considering before getting a bunny as a pet. Great post!
awesome post we also recently took intrest in spreading the word that this easter we need to buy chocolate rabbits not real rabbits. A great organization that has partnered with Make mine chocolate is Rescue chocolate you should check them out they donate proceeds of their sales to different organizations and this month its in honor of Make mine chocolate and house rabbit fund i believe. they are on fb and twitter. great post
I've had bunnies, they are sweet but they aren't for everyone. For Easter, I'm going with chocolate too(Make mine Lindt chocolate!).

This is a great post, bunny gifts should definitely be made of chocolate -we have zillions of wild bunnies in our area they are so cute, but giving animals as gifts is never a good idea.
Great post! Love your blog.
Thank you for calling attention to this incredibly important message!
I'll definitely be making mine chocolate!
