Battle of the Christmas Carols: Which is the best?

I have a very important question for you today.

Ebeneezer Scrooge was introduced to the world by Charles Dickens. His novella, A Christmas Carol, was published in 1843. Since then, there have been countless adaptations and stories inspired by this iconic work. (There was even a Halloween twist on the story in a great episode of Roseanne.) Whether you’re a fan of Bill Murray or the Flintstones, there’s a version for you.

So, tell me.. which adaptation is your favorite? As for me, there are two that top my list:

  • Mickey’s Christmas Carol – I’ve always been a big fan of this Disney version. Honestly, it’s probably my favorite – there’s something about this one that gets me every time. I especially enjoy Goofy’s appearance as Marley’s ghost.
  • The Muppet Christmas Carol – This one is an extremely close second. Statler and Waldorf as Marley? Genius. (Apparently, I really like that role.) Also, Gonzo makes an awesome Dickens. And it’s full of puns.

Now it’s your turn. Which version do you have to watch during the holiday season? Did your favorite TV show do an episode inspired by it? Tell me your favorites in the comments  – perhaps I’ll have to add some new versions to my holiday viewing list!

  1. My fave (I believe I’ve said this here before…) is “Scrooge” the musical version from the 70s. I watch it every year and I know every word of every song by heart. Gotta love a musical that has a song called “I Hate People”.

I also enjoy Scrooged and the Muppet versions.

Have you ever read the book? It’s so fantastic. I read it every few years. Love Dickens!

  2. Muppets all the way! Though I am also partial to the animated version starring Jim Carrey and Colin Firth. They did an excellent job at keeping true to the book and I like to watch that one every year as well.

And of course, the Alistair Sim version must be watched every Christmas Eve, just before bed. It’s just law.
