Do you remember when you first fell in love with animals? I was thinking about this today, but I couldn’t identify a specific moment. I just know that I always really loved animals. I loved playing with the dogs and cats at other people’s houses.
Despite the name of this blog, my first pet was actually a cat. I was around three years old, and I fell in love with a white kitten. I named her Buttercup, and she was all mine.
Frankly, she was kind of a jerk sometimes. Every night, she would hop up on my bed and demand to be petted. When she’d had enough, she would scratch me and then run away. It was our nightly routine for years. However, she eventually outgrew that behavior… with one exception. Until she left us, Buttercup would resurrect the old pet n’ bite routine every time my cousin J would come to visit.
That being said, Buttercup was my jerk, and I loved her dearly. She provided endless entertainment – whether she was bringing a live bat into the house or going completely limp the one time we tried to put a harness on her. (Seriously, she froze in place and didn’t get up until we took it off of her.) She was part Siamese and would occasionally favor us with the song (the yowl?) of her people. I adored her in all of her quirky glory. I miss her (and having a feline in my life).
So, tell me… who was your first pet?
Buttercup really didn’t like me. The bat was the real clue.
We had a beagle named Barney. We were puppies together. (I think I was like 2 when my dad brought him home.) He is to blame for my love of all dogs tri-colored!

“We were puppies together” is an adorable phrase!
Buttercup was such a beauty! When I was born my parents had a black Lab, so you could say that Blackie Duke was my first pet. First one I got to choose for my own was my Beagle when I was 8 years old. Named Snoopy, of course. 🙂

My parents already had lots of animals before they had me, so I could name several. But the clearest memory I have (and probably my very earliest one) is getting our German Shepherd puppy when I was two. I remember the car ride home with the puppy(Storm was his name) in the back of the station wagon. Then I have no more memories Storm as a puppy. They kick back in when he was probably 8 or 9. He was a beautiful, protective boy colored like a wolf and was born before the breed standard went haywire with that sloping rear end GSDs have now.

My first pet was a German Shepherd/Collie mix named Mavin. She had been a part of my family since before I was born. I can’t imagine a life without animals!

Buttercup sure had some personality! I love the swat and run away method, haha. My first pet (not counting fish I don’t remember) was a Hamster. I named her May… because I got her in May. I sure was creative back then!

My first pet was in our home before I was born. She was an amazing Boxer named “Brandy”…my mother used to say she acted like my nurse maid. She slept by my crib and if I cried she got my parents to come in to me. She used to let me pull her muzzle and giggle while I did it. Sadly, she passed of cancer of the mouth when she was only 7 yrs old. She is where my love of pets began.

It’s clear that Brandy was a wonderful companion – what a sweet soul.
Our first dog when I was a child was also a Beagle named Barney! He lived to be 20 years old, so he was our only dog. We grew up together and he was the best! ♥
