Go Packer Puppies!

I love Super Bowl Sunday.  If I’m being honest, I’m not always that into the game.  However, I am into throwing a party (we host an annual party affectionately known as Bella Bowl – this year it’s Bella Bowl V).  I’m also into watching (and judging) hilarious commercials.  Finally, I’m into the ridiculous cuteness that is the Puppy Bowl.  So you can imagine my glee when I stumbled upon this video from the Wisconsin Humane Society:

Want more?  Watch the Packer Puppies take on the Bears.

I’m not a Packers fan – but I’m not a Steelers fan either.  However, I think this video has convinced me to root for the Packers this weekend.  That many puppies can’t be wrong.

(Oh, and this year I’ve found another reason to love Super Bowl Sunday – it’s also the day of the Super Dog Sunday Blog Hop courtesy of All Things Dog!)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Remember our buddy Roscoe?  He’s visiting us for a few days.  If you’ll recall, Bella wasn’t very hospitable last time he came to visit.  This time?  So far, so good…

I am thankful for many things today, including the Bella-Roscoe Thanksgiving Peace Treaty of 2010.

Have a wonderful holiday!

To all the dogs (and cats) I’ve loved before

With this post, I reach a bit of a milestone – 100 posts!  For a while, I was stumped regarding what to blog about for number 100.  (I then went on vacation, which resulted in a total post hiatus… more to come on that later.)

While driving earlier, it hit me – the perfect way to commemorate my 100th post.  I’ve decided to dedicate this post to all the pets I’ve loved before.  (Yes, that’s a nod to the Red Headed Stranger – bonus points if you figure it out without clicking on either of the links.)

Anyway, you obviously know lots about Bella, my current fur child.  I’ve also introduced you to some of my past loves – Shadow, Sparkle, Bourbon & Pedro.  Today, I’d like you to meet the rest of the pups and cats I shared my house with growing up…

Each of these wonderful animals (as well as the ones above) really deserves their own post.  So many stories to share – definitely a topic for future discussion.  For now, I’ll just stick with the basics…

I should start at the beginning (a very good place to start).  My first pet was – believe it or not – a cat.  A white cat that I named Buttercup.  (Don’t ask me why… I’d love to ask my three-year-old self the same thing.)

She wasn’t the friendliest of cats to start with, but that’s a story for another day.  She was my first love.

Next, I’d like to introduce you to Kandi, a chihuahua that my dad adopted and brought home one day.  Note – when she got older, her tongue began to stick out all the time.  We used to say that her spring was broken.

Quite the character, that one.

We also had a Norwegian Elkhound named Lady – one of the many dogs that found us over the years.

I loved to cuddle with that gal.

My sister also had a cat – though Tiger joined us when I was much older.  She was once our neighbor’s cat, but decided to adopt my sister instead.  She even decided to have her kittens in my sister’s lap – I believe my sister was around three at the time.  Talk about a surprise!

Last, but by no means least, I must introduce you to the source of my terrier love.  When I was ten years old, I met the most wonderful dog.  My parents had promised me I could get a new dog that would be officially “my” dog.  I considered many breeds, and had my heart set on a Scottish Terrier.  However, when I met this girl, that plan went out the window.  I’d already settled on the most creative name (sarcasm intentional) for the Scottish Terrier I had convinced myself I was getting.  Thus, Scotti the Toy Fox Terrier joined our family.

Take note of the teddy bear in the photo to the right… this is one of the two teddy bears that Scotti adopted and carried everywhere.

Long story short, Scotti was by my side every minute from the time I was 10 until I left for college (as well as every moment I returned home during college and beyond).  Definitely a girl’s best friend.

I have tons of wonderful stories about each of these special animals (as well as several other animals who didn’t live in my house but were responsible for some great memories).  I’m sure I’ll be sharing them over many nostalgic nights in the future.

For now, I just want to say thanks for reading my blog – the first 100 posts have been fun, and I look forward to many more.

In closing, say hi to your puppy for me… and then give him or her a big hug.

Lick the moon

The comic below made me think of Bella, who likes to lick things. And by things, I mean any and all things she encounters.  (Seriously… everything.)

Little Dog Lost
(Trouble reading? Go here for a larger version.)

Due to the convoluted workings of my mind, I now have “Kiss the Rain” stuck in my head.  As a result (and due to the convoluted workings of the Internet), I found this gem to share with you.  (Hint: it involves the song above… and the Creek.  Yes, that Creek.)

I should probably stop now.

Puppy Woof Woof

I don’t have words… I found the video below oddly addictive:

(via Best Week Ever)

It took me forever to figure out why the song sounded so familiar.  Did you figure it out?

I also wanted to say a quick thank you for some recent awards we received.  Big thanks to:

and

Instead of passing these awards along, I would like to encourage you to visit the wonderful blogs who gave this award to us, and then check out our other friends listed in the blogroll at right. Lots of awesome reads!

His name is Puppy, he goes woof woof, woof woof woof…

OK Dog

I liked OK Go after that awesome treadmill video.  After watching the video below, I love them:

(via Best Week Ever)

Most of these doggie superstars are rescues, and the message at the end of the video encourages viewers to support the ASPCA.  You can even donate to animal rescue through OK Go’s website.

Apparently OK Go is on Leno tonight… I don’t usually watch, but I may make an exception this one time…

Oh, Toto

… and by Toto, I mean the dog.  Not to be confused with the band who blessed the rains down in Africa.  (Full disclosure – I used to think the lyrics were “I miss the rains down in Africa.”  I love a good misheard lyric… aka the mondegreen.)

Anyway… the 71st anniversary of the Wizard of Oz (the film) was Thursday, August 12.  I learned this fact thanks to Google’s cool logo and Life with Dogs.  Man, I was so scared of those flying monkeys as a child.  For years, I couldn’t make it past that part of the movie.

Given the recent anniversary, it seemed like a good time to dig this Wizard of Oz-themed post out of the pup archives and share it with you:

Leonbergers and Terriers and Airedales – oh my!

Enjoy!

Roscoe P. Coltrane

In this case, the P stands for Puppy.

You may remember when Bella had her first canine guest in our new house… his name was Roscoe, and Bella didn’t exactly make him feel welcome.

While visiting family this weekend (sans Bella… her carsickness is the stuff of legend), I had the opportunity to spend some more time with Roscoe, who is another rescue dog.  He’s an absolute sweetheart.  I hope you enjoy these photos of him… I couldn’t stop snapping pictures of this cutie!

Horrible woman does terrible thing… and now I’m angry

We’ve touched on the issue of pet safety in the summer before.  I don’t understand how people still don’t get it.  I mean, it’s a really simple concept:  DON’T LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A HOT CAR.  Although you’d think this would be easy to grasp, apparently it’s too advanced for some people.  Some thoughtless, terrible people.

You may be wondering why I’m so worked up about this today. I just read a story that made me so angry that I wanted to punch something… in particular, the woman in the story.

The headline says it all:  “Woman finds dog dead in her sweltering car outside Costco, returns pet supplies.”  (There’s a link to a segment aired by a local news outlet in that article, but I couldn’t bring myself to watch it.  The woman has been charged with cruelty.)

Seriously?  It’s been hot for weeks in the DC area… temperatures have been consistently in the nineties, and sometimes even higher.  Yet this woman thought it would be okay to leave her poor dog, Delta, locked in a car?  It was 104 degrees outside.  While shopping at Costco, she left Delta in an oven for an hour and fifteen minutes.  Then, when she returned and realized that she had killed Delta, she RETURNED THE PET SUPPLIES she had just purchased.  I can think of many words to describe this woman right now, none of which are PG-13.  (Don’t even get me started on the comments by her estranged husband in this article.  Waterworks initiated.  That poor man.)

I’m so angry I can’t even type anymore.  (League of Angry Gentlemen – I expect an equally angry post from you about this pathetic excuse for a person.  Update: The Angry Gentlemen answered the call.  When you want anger done right, go to a professional.)

Tuesday Tag-AlongI know I’m probably preaching to the choir here.  (In fact, several bloggers called attention to this issue last week during Blog the Change.)  In honor of poor Delta and other dogs who have suffered this fate, I encourage anyone who reads this post to promote pet safety today by linking to MyDogIsCool.com on their site.  It’s unacceptable that any dog should have to die because a careless person traps them in a hot car.
