Now casting: Bella’s made-for-TV movie

Hmmm… perhaps it would be a direct-to-DVD movie instead?  Bella doesn’t have a large ego, so I’m sure she wouldn’t expect her first flick to go straight to the big screen… anyway, you may be wondering what I’m rambling about right now.

Although I got sidetracked thinking about the format, I’m trying to decide what human celeb would play Bella in a movie.  Where did that random query come from?  The lovely Kahuna K9 (a new blog I discovered today through my blogging pals at Rescued Insanity, Kol’s Notes and Something Wagging This Way Comes) has invited bloggers to answer that question.  So, it’s time to cast Bella’s doppleganger…

After much consideration, I’ve decided to give the role to Kristen Schaal.  (Loved her in Flight of the Conchords and still love her when she pops up on The Daily Show or anywhere else.)  I think her performance as Mel on FOTC was the key to winning this role… there’s something about her slightly goofy, happy nature with an edge that just says Bella to me.  Do you agree?

Any thoughts on who should be Kristen’s understudy? (Bella’s movie just morphed into a play, I guess.)

Clan of the Cave Dog, part 2

On Monday, I treated you to a rare glimpse of the elusive Cave Dog (complete with nature show commentary). Today, I share a few additional shots of this fascinating creature courtesy of our mobile Cave Dog tracking unit…
When necessary, the Cave Dog will construct a makeshift cave using available resources.

The Cave Dog imitates other animals (such as the tortoise) to avoid suspicion.

Highly adaptable, the Cave Dog has even learned how to make its cave portable.

However, as you can see, the Cave Dog is not a stealthy beast.

Clan of the Cave Dog

I have a special treat for you today.  We’re going to visit the lair of a mysterious animal known as the Cave Dog.  Not too close… we don’t want to spook the magnificent creature.  However, if we move slowly, we may be able to catch a glimpse of this cozy canine.

The Cave Dog’s origins are a mystery.  Rumor has it that the Cave Dog will hide under anything.  At night, the Cave Dog usually falls asleep in its chosen den… after a few hours, one can hear the Cave Dog shuffling out of the cave.  This nightly migration from cave to dog bed is a phenomenon that pupologists cannot explain.  Only the Cave Dog knows the reasons behind this puzzling pattern.

If you know where to  look, you may be able to find a Cave Dog under a sofa, table, or bed.  Although the Cave Dog gravitates to these locations, the beast is not stealthy.  The observant naturalist can usually spot an errant foot or tail, which will give away the creature’s location.  On occasion, the Cave Dog will even leave its head exposed.

Alas, the Cave Dog’s habitat is under attack.  When a new bed replaced the old, the Cave Dog could no longer fit underneath it.  Although the Cave Dog has managed to squeeze underneath the new landmark in a fit of thunderstorm-induced panic, the habitat is no longer ideal.  (Humans are so inconsiderate.)  Fortunately, our team of Cave Dog conservationists has constructed a new habitat for the reclusive pooch.  By draping an afghan over a conveniently located bench at the foot of the bed, we have created a new den of privacy.  The Cave Dog has adjusted well to the new habitat and appears to be quite content.

Now, you’re in for a real treat… we’ve managed to get a photo inside the Cave Dog’s lair!

Believe it or not, the Cave Dog was fairly hospitable and gave us a slurp before we departed.  Nature never fails to surprise.

Blog the Change: Happy birthday, Petfinder!

Blog the ChangeIt’s that time again… another installment of Blog the Change for Animals!

I’ve focused on a variety of issues in the past (for my earlier posts related to Be the Change for Animals, click here), but today I want to keep it short and sweet.

As you know, Bella’s a rescue pup.  I found her using Petfinder… I’ll forever be indebted to that wonderful website for making these last 10 years of puppy love possible.  With that in mind, I’d like to dedicate today’s post to Petfinder… it’s Petfinder’s 15th birthday this weekend, after all.  Synergy!

Yesterday, I read an article about animal shelters and how both adoptions and donations have been declining due to the economy.  That’s why all I want to say to you today is this: if you’re thinking about getting another pet, adopt. Consider donating your time, money, or resources to your local shelters and rescue groups.  Petfinder has a wealth of info… read about how you can help and then find a local rescue group.  I’ve donated food and other items in the past, but I’ve decided that I want to do more.

Today, I renew my own commitment to helping animals and will be contacting at least one local group to donate my time.  I hope you’ll take a few moments today to think about what you could do to help animals in need.  (If you’re already involved with a rescue group in any way shape or form, I want you to know that you are my hero and I want to be like you when I grow up.)

Like I said, short and sweet.  (As short as I’m capable of anyway.)

I don’t just stroll down memory lane…

Seriously, I don’t just stroll down Memory Lane anymore.  Sometimes it seems like I’ve purchased a nice little house there. At the very least, I’ve bought a vacation home in the neighborhood.  So… anybody else remember this animated short from Nickelodeon?

I do always wonder what Bella dreams about…

In case you’re wondering why I found this today… be prepared for another scary trip on my train of thought.  For some reason I started wondering if there were any videos combining dogs and Beverly Hills, 90210… which led me to this video of a dog reacting to the classic theme song.  Of course (?) that got me thinking about the Pound Puppies… so I watched this commercial for Pound Puppies Colorforms. (Remember those? I definitely had this exact set, as well as that Pooch on the Loose game… that thing was awesome.)  One of the related videos on the sidebar was the Nickelodeon animated short above… and thus I thought I should share it with you.

I also ended up watching a few other Nickelodeon shorts. It’s amazing how many of them I remembered!  I even found two favorites: “Housecats” and “The Cat Came Back.”  Apparently the secret word for today is nostalgia.

Hope you’re having a fantastic Sunday!

Bella’s in the holiday spirit…

To those of you in the U.S., I hope you have a wonderful July 4th!  It’s been busy around here… I made some patriotic cupcakes and a ridiculous amount of sangria yesterday.  (No joke – I bought a 2 gallon cooler to store it in. Let’s just hope that nobody tries to go total sports fan and dump it on someone’s head as if it were Gatorade.)  In addition, I’ve made some giant submarine sandwiches, and a vat (also not really an exaggeration) of Asian Noodle Salad.  We won’t starve, that’s for sure!

Anyway, no time for a long post, but I wanted to wish all of you a happy 4th of July – I hope you have a fantastic day.  So does Bella… she even dressed for the occasion:

In spite of the holiday, Bella’s nap schedule proceeds as usual.

Happy 4th!

Of books and beaches…

A long weekend… the stuff that dreams are made of.  I don’t have to go back to the office until Wednesday.  In addition to Monday’s holiday, I took Tuesday off as well.  As you can imagine, I’m pretty excited!  But first, I need to send you into the weekend with your usual dose of randomness…

  1. Today’s punny pet name is LeVar Purrton. Why?  Read on…
  2. You know of my love for Reading Rainbow.  So I’m sure you can understand how excited I was to learn that LeVar Burton is organizing a Reading Rainbow flash mob to raise literary awareness.  Awesome.
  3. In honor of butterflies in the sky and taking a look because it’s in a book, enjoy these photos of 50 animals reading.
  4. There’s nothing better than grabbing a book and relaxing outside (beach, pool, yard… anywhere will do).  If your pool also contained these guinea pigs or these baby elephants having fun, it’d be a pretty perfect day.  Just make sure you have a lifeguard – perhaps of the dog variety?
  5. Are you more of a beach person?  I’ve got you covered: here’s a baby elephant on the beach.  You’re welcome.

Of course I can’t send you into the weekend without a video. Since we’re letting guinea pigs and elephants have some fun, seems like it’s only fair to let dogs in on the action…

Doesn’t that video just make you want to go outside to play with your pup?

Before I go, I wanted to tell you that I’m trying out a new thing… Bella graciously allows me to stop adoring her for a few moments now and then to do some baking.  Rather than bombard you with recipes and photos here, I’ve created another space for that sort of thing.  Every now and then, you can find me over at I Still Want More Cupcakes, telling you how much I love butter and sugar in addition to puppies.  I hope you’ll stop by sometime. Puppies are still the main event and posting won’t be slowed here, but you’ll get the occasional bonus of some baked goods to ogle.  Win-win, right?

So, what are you up to this weekend?  Whatever it is, I hope you have fun!
