Things’ll go your way…

No theme today… just a hodgepodge of random things that I’m enjoying.  It seemed fitting to send you into this potentially gorgeous weekend with several random doses of silly:

  1. As always, we begin with punny pet names: Maya Rudog and Kristen Pig (totally what I would name a potbelly pig if I had one, by the way).  This week, they’re inspired by Bridesmaids, which I saw last weekend.  Hilarious. (As a result, I also have Wilson Phillips on the brain – in fact, I may have serenaded Bella with Hold On this morning.)
  2. All of this lovely summer weather has me thinking about days gone by… and these Jim Henson themed cakes are a perfectly sweet accompaniment to my nostalgia.  What I wouldn’t give to have my own heckling balcony, like Statler and Waldorf
  3. So… have you ever wondered what would happen if the dialogue in classic Peanuts comics was replaced with random tweets?  Probably not, but the answer is out there anyway – visit @Peanutweeter to find out.  I can’t do the hilarity justice here, but I especially liked this one.  (Speaking of Twitter, follow me at @wantmorepuppies and say hi!)
  4. Additional blast from the past brought to the present: Jem, narrated honey badger style.
  5. I’m going to indulge my nerd side here for a moment.  This blog post on punctuation made me smile… really.
  6. Animals riding on animals?  Sounds like a winner to me.  Enjoy a Chihuahua riding a tortoise and then let the cute continue with a baby sea lion riding a turtle.  Hmmm… why are turtles and tortoises the preferred method of transportation?  Given their lack of speed, you think they’d be hitching a ride instead.
  7. I have nothing witty to say about this next one, so here you go: cute bunnies jumping.
  8. This dog wants to swim with the dolphins, and this one wants to hang out with a cow.  It’s a crazy and adorable world out there.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the most random of them all?  Based on the following video, it’s probably me (at least today).  However, I cannot stop laughing when I watch it:

Thanks for being such wonderful readers… if I could, I’d send you all a puppy bouquet.  I’m participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure tomorrow – it’s the first time I’m doing it as a runner!  Wish me luck, and have a weekend full of wags!

Duck, duck… pooch?

You may recall when we celebrated Squirrel Appreciation Day.  Today, we celebrate another member of the wild kingdom – ducks!  That’s right, May is National Duckling Month

  1. As usual, we begin with some puns: Duckleberry Finn, Duckbill Gates and Duck Rodgers.
  2. Speaking of puns, check out the report on this duckling rescue.  Puns galore!
  3. Although not punny, these duckling photos are pretty darn cute!  (Want more? Check out these cute ducks over at Winnie’s Dog Blog.)
  4. Looking for a way to celebrate ducklings this month?  Check out these cute kids’ books about ducklings – I always did like Jemima Puddle-Duck.
  5. Three words: duckling obstacle course!
  6. Wondering how I’m going to connect the dots (connect the ducks?) between ducks and puppies?  Wonder no more – check out what happens when a brave little duck meets a not-so-brave dog. (Apparently our pal Zona has also had her own duck-related trauma.)

However, don’t be fooled.  We know that dogs and chicks can be friends…  dogs and ducks can be too!

Speaking of dogs and ducks, this classic Donald Duck cartoon fits the theme perfectly.  Have a great weekend!

Happy Easter!

In honor of Easter, I thought I’d give you two videos today.  In the spirit of the holiday, I’m giving cats, dogs, bunnies, and chicks a moment to shine.  First up, Simon’s Cat celebrates Easter:

Don’t you just love it?  I have a feeling you’ll like this next one too:

Now that I’ve filled your Easter basket with cute, get out there and have a wonderful day!

Kiss the world

It’s Earth Day, so today’s video has a special message for you.  But first…

  1. I cannot take credit for today’s punny pet name.  It is genius:  Piggie Smalls.  Also genius and not of my creation: Ol’ Birdy Bastard.  However, I will add a few more names to the list: Notorious P.I.G. and Dr. Bray (for a donkey, of course).
  2. You must watch this audition for Britain’s Got Talent.  I love this woman. I love her dogs.  I love her dog sweater. Love. Her.
  3. Sometimes, you just need to watch cute animals.  Pick your poision: the San Diego Zoo’s Pandacam, the Edinburgh Zoo Penguin Cam, or the Shiba Inu Puppy Cam (it’s back!).
  4. If you prefer your cute in photos rather than videos, I give you this slideshow of pets snuggling with stuffed animals (includes bonus Gremlins reference – be still, my beating heart).

As you may or may not know, we celebrated Earth Day last year by turning the blog over to Captain Pug (obviously our hero and obviously going to take pollution down to zero – also, in case you were wondering, he is cuteness magnified, and he is fighting on the planet’s side).  I don’t know if I can top that… however, I did want to remind you to show the Earth a little extra love today:

(Hat tip to Subroto Bagchi for inspiring the title of today’s post.)

Daily Bella #462

Bella doesn’t always make an appearance in my Daily Shoot photos.  (They’re also not daily, but I’m working on it.)  However, today she was kind enough to be my model.  The assignment?

Work with scale today and make a photograph that features a subject either larger or smaller than expected.

Here’s the photo I selected:

So… now what?

Peanuts
(via Peanuts)

I think Snoopy’s predicament above accurately represents how I feel the day after a big holiday. Planning, preparation, anticipation… and then it’s over, just like that.  I made some yummy cranberry sauce muffins this morning to help fill the void.  Now I need a new project…

In the meantime, it’s time for this week’s No Frown Friday:

  1. Your punny pet names for the week reveal that I still haven’t accepted the fact that Thanksgiving is over: Myles Foodish and William Labford.  (For my fellow pun lovers, you simply must read last Sunday’s Pearls Before Swine. Can you figure it out?)
  2. Want to see something amazingly adorable? Check out these photos of dogs dressed as turkeys.  All will seem right with the world after you do.
  3. Don’t eat too many leftovers… or else this might be your fate.  (Not sure what to do with all of those leftovers?  Serious Eats has some ideas.)
  4. Did you cook a turkey yesterday? I hope that you weren’t the one that asked these stupid questions of the Butterball hotline.

Speaking of turkey, this puppy would really appreciate it if you could send some her way:

(For more videos of dogs who want turkey, go here.)

Anyway, I’m finally going to see the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows tomorrow.  I know… after my recent Potter-themed post, I bet you thought I’d be first in line on opening day.  Unfortunately, things have just been too busy.  In honor of my pending movie trip, I made my own butterbeer to go with dessert last  night – it was a hit (and unlike Universal Studios, I offered an alcoholic version as well).

As I write this post, the peace talks between Roscoe and Bella have reached a new level – they’re both sleeping on the couch at the same time (dreaming of turkey, no doubt).  Expect some photos and a recap after Bella’s hostessing duties are done.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Dogson’s Creek

As you may know, this week I have Dawson’s Creek on the brain.  I’m not quite ready to move on.  After all, we already saluted the Bev-Niner, so it’s only fair that Dawson’s Creek gets its due.

  1. This week’s punny pet names come to you straight from Capeside:  Dogson Leery, Jen Brindley, Pacey Litter (or for a bird – Pacey Twitter), Crow-y Potter, and Jack McFlea.  (Dogson’s Creek… the next project from my punny production company?)
  2. The show should have just been named after Pacey instead.  If you’re a Pacey fan, you owe it to your 1999 self to watch this hilarious video about Pacey-Con 2010.
  3. I decided to see if there were any animals with Creek-related names available for adoption on Petfinder.  Allow me to introduce you to Dawson, Pacey, and Joey… they’re looking for homes!
  4. So, when I searched for “dawson’s creek puppy” (I do it for you, dear readers), I found this video.  It’s a dog… swimming in a creek for the first time.

As you may have gathered from the last item above, my search for an animal-themed Creek video for today was not so successful. So instead, I give you dogs watching TV (the commentary by the person filming amused me, and I apparently like to watch animals watch things):

For some reason, these two terriers just made me smile (and not just because they are terriers… though I’m sure that helped).  Anyway, I’m going to pretend it still relates to the Creek because they are the future dog version of Joey & Pacey… or something.

Oh, and since No Frown Friday was on hiatus last week, here’s a bonus link to some more illustrations and punny pet names from Chet Phillips (including two quizzes – check out the one at the bottom of the post for a real challenge).  You may remember the two installments of his literary pets series that I shared before – this time, the theme is artists.  Enjoy!
