The lovely Dawn from afFURmation had the brilliant idea to host a blog hop to promote cat adoption in honor of Adopt-a-Cat Month. Although Bella’s the star of the show here, our feline friends do make frequent appearances on the blog (and I’ve had a few kitty loves of my own over the years). Also, I’m never one to pass up a good blog hop… so, I’m joining up and sharing some adoptable cuties today.

Tomorrow is Take Your Dog to Work Day! As I discussed last year, Bella cannot come to work with me, but you know what they say – those who can, do; those who can’t, blog about it anyway! So, even though Bella and I will not be participating (the closest we’ll ever get is when Bella hangs out under my feet when I work from home), that won’t stop me from sharing a few links!
Cleo over at Grouchy Puppy makes a convincing case for dogs in the workplace. There are so many hardworking dogs out there helping to prove her point…. in fact, some of our blog friends – including One Pibble’s Wish – are ready to show off their typing skills! Although there are some puppies who sleep on the job, you shouldn’t hold that against all potential canine employees.
Not sure if taking your dog to work is for you, or where to start? Two Little Cavaliers has some tips for talking to your boss about this issue. You can also check out this handy list of things to know before taking your dog to work (courtesy of BlogPaws) and some more great tips from the All Things Dog Blog. Banjo & Millie also provided a wealth of information about the benefits of pets in the workplace – I encourage you to check it out!
Finally, I leave you with a video that seemed perfect for today’s post:
Are you taking your pup to the office tomorrow?

Hope your creative juices are flowing today – most entertaining wins my everlasting affection. (Perhaps I need to think up a better prize.) Anyway, have at it…
Oh, and I wanted to let you know that afFURmation is sponsoring a blog hop for Adopt a Cat Month on Monday, June 27. Bella’s always willing to help out her feline friends, so we’ll be participating – hope you will too!
Too many awesome pet blogs, too little time…
As I mentioned yesterday, the fabulous blogs Something Wagging This Way Comes and Kol’s Notes recently gave this blog the Versatile Blogger Award. So, I’m doing my duty and passing it along…
First and foremost, thanks again to Something Wagging and Kol’s Notes for sharing this award with me. I highly recommend you pay them a visit – both blogs are great! Bella and I are humbled to be in such company…
The rules: I have to tell you seven things about myself and then choose fifteen other blogs that deserve the award. (One set of rules said newly-discovered, and the other set just said versatile, so I’m making up my own rule and just choosing fifteen blogs I always enjoy… though it’s hard to narrow it down to just fifteen. As you can see from the blogroll at right, I enjoy a lot of blogs!)
The last time I did something like this, I shared some puppy-related items about myself and some things about Bella. So, this time I decided to use my seven things to tell you a little more about me (the non-dog related stuff). Here we go:
- My favorite food is grilled cheese.
- I’m a voracious reader… I go through books at a pretty fast pace. In fact, I just started a new book last night (the fifth book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries), and finished it this evening. Hours need to be subtracted for sleep, work, commuting, and dinner, during which reading was not an option. Another recent example? I finished all three Hunger Games books in 3 days. When I get into a book, it’ll be gone in no time. Tina Fey’s Bossypants is next in my sights.
- I never thought I’d want an e-reader, but I love my Kindle.
- I love writing song parodies (as you may have guessed from my recent post about the Pupperazzi). Although I can’t really sing, I can’t help myself!
- I love outdoor concerts. And wine. Especially outdoor concerts that allow you to bring wine.
- I enjoy movies… and musicals. Thus, I was in geek heaven yesterday when I went with a friend to see Stephen Sondheim’s Company at the movie theater. So far this summer, I’ve already seen a production of Follies (apparently I’m in a Sondheim kind of mood lately), and will be seeing Wicked and Mamma Mia again soon. I’m sure there will be other performances in my future as well…
- I can relate pretty much anything back to Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210. It’s one of my… talents?
Whew… hope you made it through my rambling. Now, to the fun part! I’m passing this award onto the following blogs:
- This One Wild Life
- BZ Training
- Doggie Stylish
- The Chronicles of Cardigan
- Grouchy Puppy
- CindyLu’s Muse
- under the blanket
- Rescued Insanity
- Peggy’s Pet Place
- Kenzo the Hovawart
- My Brown Newfies
- No Dog About It Blog
- Doggylove
- Brian’s Home
- Will My Dog Hate Me?
- 24 Paws of Love
- The Thundering Herd
Don’t count… I may have cheated a little. Honestly, this was way too hard and there were so many others I wanted to mention, so if I didn’t list you above, please don’t be offended! Perhaps I need some sort of regular feature where I heap all sorts of compliments upon all you wonderful pet bloggers out there, so that I’m not leaving anyone out. Stay tuned, my lovely readers – the wheels are turning on this one!
Father’s Day & some bloggy business
Deep thoughts? |
A few topics I want to hit today…
First, I’d like to wish a happy Father’s Day to all of the great dads out there, including my own! (Bella the grandpuppy sends her love to my dad too.) In your honor, here are some adorable animals celebrating Father’s Day and some amazing Father’s Day cakes. Consider it a virtual celebration…
Second, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Kol’s Notes and Something Wagging This Way Comes for choosing to honor this blog
with the Versatile Blogger award! I’ll do a longer post on this
subject later (and pass it on to some other blogs I love), but I wanted
to say thank you.
Finally, I’m sending happy birthday wishes to our buddy Kolchak Puggle (he shares it with Garfield, so he’s in good company)!
Everything really is better with puppies
The amazing and wonderful Pamela from Something Wagging This Way Comes (don’t you just love the name?) recently highlighted my humble blog as one of her favorites. (Pamela had the brilliant idea to encourage her readers to visit some other fun dog blogs out there – including another of my faves, 24 Paws of Love – while she was on vacation… I just may have to “borrow” this idea one day. In case you can’t tell, I want to be like Pamela when I grow up.)
Anyway, I’d like to take this moment to return the sentiment. I highly recommend you swing by and check out Something Wagging This Way Comes to meet Pamela and her Golden Retriever, Honey, whose cuteness is off the charts. Threre are so many fun and interesting things on Something Wagging – one of my favorite regular features is “The Puppiness Project.” It’s a twist on Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project (which I also loved), in which Pamela attempts to learn how to be happy by studying Honey. It’s an absolutely brilliant concept, and it will really get you thinking. (A small sample: the merits of cuddling, learning to eat with gusto, and trying to expect the best from people.) Maybe we’d all be better people if we followed our dogs’ examples!
However, my favorite post title has to be this one: “Everything’s Better with Puppies.” If I didn’t already have a blog title, I’d be begging Pamela to let me borrow that one!
So, in honor of Pamela and Honey, I suggest we all embrace our inner puppy and enjoy life without worrying about who is watching or if we look absolutely ridiculous, like this guy:

The happiness is just radiating off that video in waves… it’s a nice a reminder to enjoy the simple things, try not to take everything too seriously, and have some fun. Now get out there, tell Monday you’re going to have fun in spite of it, and enjoy your week!
Things’ll go your way…
No theme today… just a hodgepodge of random things that I’m enjoying. It seemed fitting to send you into this potentially gorgeous weekend with several random doses of silly:
- As always, we begin with punny pet names: Maya Rudog and Kristen Pig (totally what I would name a potbelly pig if I had one, by the way). This week, they’re inspired by Bridesmaids, which I saw last weekend. Hilarious. (As a result, I also have Wilson Phillips on the brain – in fact, I may have serenaded Bella with Hold On this morning.)
- All of this lovely summer weather has me thinking about days gone by… and these Jim Henson themed cakes are a perfectly sweet accompaniment to my nostalgia. What I wouldn’t give to have my own heckling balcony, like Statler and Waldorf…
- So… have you ever wondered what would happen if the dialogue in classic Peanuts comics was replaced with random tweets? Probably not, but the answer is out there anyway – visit @Peanutweeter to find out. I can’t do the hilarity justice here, but I especially liked this one. (Speaking of Twitter, follow me at @wantmorepuppies and say hi!)
- Additional blast from the past brought to the present: Jem, narrated honey badger style.
- I’m going to indulge my nerd side here for a moment. This blog post on punctuation made me smile… really.
- Animals riding on animals? Sounds like a winner to me. Enjoy a Chihuahua riding a tortoise and then let the cute continue with a baby sea lion riding a turtle. Hmmm… why are turtles and tortoises the preferred method of transportation? Given their lack of speed, you think they’d be hitching a ride instead.
- I have nothing witty to say about this next one, so here you go: cute bunnies jumping.
- This dog wants to swim with the dolphins, and this one wants to hang out with a cow. It’s a crazy and adorable world out there.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the most random of them all? Based on the following video, it’s probably me (at least today). However, I cannot stop laughing when I watch it:

Thanks for being such wonderful readers… if I could, I’d send you all a puppy bouquet. I’m participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure tomorrow – it’s the first time I’m doing it as a runner! Wish me luck, and have a weekend full of wags!
On Memorial Day…
Memorial Day… a time to remember those who have given their service to our country. Words really aren’t enough to describe this sacrifice and to truly honor those who have made it so that we can be free. So these simple words will have to do instead: thank you.
Last year, I shared my tribute to human and canine heroes alike. (I hope you’ll take a moment to revisit that post if you haven’t read it before – and even if you have – as it contains some fantastic links and information about War Dogs and Military Working Dogs. Also, if you are in the market for something to make you cry today, I have a feeling that post will provide what you need.)
I did want to share some links with you today:
- As you probably know, a dog helped in the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound. This amazing dog, a Belgian Malinois named Cairo, has received quite a bit of press (and even met the President). Ever since, it seems like hero dogs have been all over the news.
- Countless dogs have served our country over the years. Check out the history of war dogs in these two amazing photo . (Thanks to and Phetched for the tip.)
- As always, The Dog Files has a moving and visually stunning saluting Military Working Dogs.
- I also urge you to visit FiveSibes for a touching tribute and some fantastic videos that are just perfect for today.
- Check out this great post from Bocci’s Beefs about dogs of war and what would have happened if cats were helping us out instead. (Just kidding… after all, there are some truly patriotic cats out there too.)
- Last year, the National World War II Museum honored some four-legged heroes in an exhibit. You can learn about some of these heroes here.
- Can’t get enough of these fabulously furry heroes? Read about five more here or watch a movie about some heroic dogs or horses..
- Not all heroic dogs are on official duty, as illustrated by this tale of a unit in Afghanistan that was saved by some local strays.
As I mentioned last year, when these hero dogs retire from service, they need homes. After Cairo’s participation in the bin Laden raid, inquiries about war dog adoption have increased, but these heroes will need homes even after the initial rush slows. If you are interested in giving a home to one of these retired heroes, learn more at Fido Friendly and then head over to Military Working Dog Adoptions. (You can also check out the Department of Defense’s Official Military Working Dog Adoption Website.)
If you have any stories about Military Working Dogs (either in action or in retirement), click on over to Dogster and read about Maria Goodavage’s new book project, Soldier Dogs.
Take a moment to remember today…
Frustration is sweeping the nation
I didn’t have a chance to put up the usual Friday post thanks to Blogger’s issues yesterday. I realize it was back up and running at some point yesterday, but thanks to work and an outdoor showing of When Harry Met Sally (baby fish mouth!), the timing just didn’t work out. I’ll save my planned post for another time. Today, I leave you with this dramatic interpretation of how I felt when I could see my blog but not edit it…

Mother’s Day
As I mentioned last year, Mother’s Day is somewhat bittersweet for me. However, I wanted to take a moment to wish a very happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful moms out there and send a big hug to all of those who are missing their moms today. My gift to you? A Bella photo, of course!
