Lend me your eyes, and I’ll write you a blog…

Earlier this week, I advised you to stay tuned (I kill me) for a post that was somehow related to that overly cute kitten playing an invisible piano in his sleep.  This is that post.  Be prepared for some serious rambling ahead… both serious in nature, and seriously rambling.  After all, you know I love Memory Lane like I grew up there.

Do you ever get the feeling that the universe is conspiring to make you slow down and indulge your nostalgic side?  Recently, I found myself commenting on two different blog posts that reminded me of a very special show from my childhood.  Does anyone else remember Garfield’s Nine Lives?  (If you do, you may be my pop culture soul mate.)

If you haven’t heard of it, Garfield’s Nine Lives began as a 1984 book containing a group of short stories illustrating the various “lives” of Garfield the cat.  (I own this book.  Fun fact about me: as a child, I was obsessed with Garfield and began collecting Garfield books – including the daily strips, the Sunday Treasuries, and the specials.  I couldn’t get enough.  I’ll always have a soft spot for that cat.)

The book was adapted into a TV special in 1988.  My mom taped it for me when it aired.  (Ah, the days of VHS.)  I watched that special countless times – I could probably still quote most of it on request (such is the case with many Garfield specials, actually, but this one was by far my favorite).  The book is a bit darker than the TV special, and some of the lives differ between the two formats.

Anyway, you may be wondering what this has to do with… anything. While reading this post from Brian’s Home, I made a comment about Cave Cats (you know, a distant relative of the elusive Cave Dog).  This reminded me of Garfield’s first life, in which he was… a Cave Cat.  In addition, while reading this post from The Chronicles of Cardigan I was reminded of another life from the TV special – my favorite one, in fact.  It’s called Diana’s Piano.

Garfield describes this life as the one where he fell in love with music and when he “fell in love with a girl who played the piano just for me.”  As a child who took years of piano lessons and had a white cat (like Diana, the feline incarnation of Garfield in Life No. 6), this cartoon was catnip.

It’s a touching story.  I just watched it again before writing this post, and needed several tissues.  Several.  Gets me every time.  I highly recommend it, but if you don’t find yourself sobbing or at least getting a little weepy… well, I just don’t know what to think about you.

My cat Buttercup wasn’t as much of a music fan as Diana (she was downright antisocial at times),  but I loved her dearly.  She was my first pet, joining our family when I was only three years old.  In my young mind, this cartoon was us.  (In fact, when Diana decides to scratch a visitor and has a look of smug satisfaction on her face, it was like they’d based the character on Buttercup.  Seriously.)

When I watched Diana’s Piano again as an adult, I realized that it also touched upon my relationship with another significant animal in my life – my dog Scotti.  She entered my life when I was ten years old

Scotti used to hang out by the piano while I’d play (she was much more of a music fan than Buttercup).  We were inseparable… and just like the woman in the cartoon, one day I had to leave for college.  (As she narrates: “That was a sad day.”)  When I called home, I’d ask to talk to Scotti on the phone, and I would ask my mom if Scotti seemed to recognize my voice.  I was always elated when my mom said yes.  I missed Scotti terribly, and I couldn’t wait to see her again.

Time passed.  I graduated and finally moved into an apartment off campus.  (One that allowed pets, of course.  That was an essential requirement.)  However, by the time I graduated college, Scotti was twelve years old – really too old to leave the comfort of my parents’ house.  It just wouldn’t have been fair to her to uproot her, move her to an apartment hundreds of miles away, and expect her to adjust to my hectic schedule.  I felt guilty that we wouldn’t be together, but I think it was the right decision.  Luckily, she didn’t hold it against me – every time I saw her it was like we had never been apart.  (She did – slightly – hold it against me when I adopted Bella and would bring her home with me for visits.  Although they only met a few times, I am sure Scotti was wondering who this interloper was and why I kept bringing her home.)

Scotti is gone now.  It’s been several years since I lost her, but I find myself thinking of her often.  She was truly my dog in a way that I’d never imagined could happen.  We had other pets when I was a kid, but the two of us were like peas and carrots.  A true team.  I can’t imagine my childhood without her by my side – she features prominently in the majority of my memories.

I realize that I’ve come to define the different phases of my life based on the cats and/or dogs that were with me during each time.  (Does anyone else do that?)  Each “era” is different, but they’re all special.  Just like the wonderful creatures I’ve been lucky to know – to paraphrase the song that inspired this blog title, I always got by with a little help from my (furry) friends.

Thanks for indulging my sentimental side… it’s funny what will inspire a trip down Memory Lane, isn’t it?

I’m so excited… I’m so excited…

I’m all over the place today… I feel like Jessie Spano on a caffeine pill bender.  (I know, Jessie.  I’ll never get into Stanford at this rate either.)   Anyway…

  1. Your punny pet names:  Jessie Spaniel and Elizabeth Barkley.
  2. Shameless self-promotion time again!  Go visit my cupcake blog and enjoy some chocolate chip and mint chocolate chip cupcakes.
  3. Penguins graduating are adorable.  I hope the penguins went retro and played the Bayside High song during commencement.
  4. The Canadian Prime Minister adopted a kitten.  This kitten is adorable.  That is all.
  5. For your consideration: this pup is gunning for an Oscar nom with his dramatic interpretation of playing dead.
  6. A chimp bottle feeding a tiger cub?  All in a day’s work.  If that’s not enough cute for you, go check out these Animals with Stuffed Animals.  I have a feeling that’ll do the trick.
  7. Add to your wish list: Dog Lips!

Finally, it’s not quite the Zenniest moment of Zen ever, but it’s pretty close:

I'm going to BlogPaws 2011 badgeIn other exciting news…. I’m going to BlogPaws!  Who else will be there?  I can’t wait…

    I don’t just stroll down memory lane…

Seriously, I don’t just stroll down Memory Lane anymore.  Sometimes it seems like I’ve purchased a nice little house there. At the very least, I’ve bought a vacation home in the neighborhood.  So… anybody else remember this animated short from Nickelodeon?

I do always wonder what Bella dreams about…

In case you’re wondering why I found this today… be prepared for another scary trip on my train of thought.  For some reason I started wondering if there were any videos combining dogs and Beverly Hills, 90210… which led me to this video of a dog reacting to the classic theme song.  Of course (?) that got me thinking about the Pound Puppies… so I watched this commercial for Pound Puppies Colorforms. (Remember those? I definitely had this exact set, as well as that Pooch on the Loose game… that thing was awesome.)  One of the related videos on the sidebar was the Nickelodeon animated short above… and thus I thought I should share it with you.

I also ended up watching a few other Nickelodeon shorts. It’s amazing how many of them I remembered!  I even found two favorites: “Housecats” and “The Cat Came Back.”  Apparently the secret word for today is nostalgia.

Hope you’re having a fantastic Sunday!

How I met your tortoise… and some Muppets

Another Friday is upon us… so you know what that means.  It’s time to send you into the weekend with a smile!

    1. As always, we begin with a punny pet name.  (It’s tradition, after all.)  This week: Jason Beagle and Marshowl Erickson (see #5 below).
    2. I’ve decided to follow that up with a little shameless self-promotion.  Check out the newest creation over at I Still Want Cupcakes.  I’m considering a whole summer series inspired by ice cream… suggestions are welcome!
    3. Ice cream got me thinking about ice cream cones, which then led to me thinking about the cone of shame.  So, um, what happens if your dog forgets he’s wearing a cone?  Hilarity.  (Cone of shame jokes are never going to get old, are they?  Seriously, that stuff is timeless.)
    4. Stick with me here… it’s random train of thought day.  (As are most days for me.)  This video of a dog (and cat) on a scooter caused me to exclaim “Dogs… on… wheels!” when I saw it.  (This video produced a similar reaction.)  Which of course got me thinking about Dogs… in… Space, followed by Pigs in Space, which ended with me looking up the premiere date for the new Muppet movie.  (November 23… I’m so there.  Who’s with me?  If you haven’t seen the trailers, I recommend you treat yourself by doing so now.  The Muppets plus Jason Segal… I could not ask for more.)
    5. Talking about Jason Segal reminded me how much I loved his performance of “Dracula’s Lament” in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  Of course someone made it into a video with the Count from Sesame Street… it’s things like this that give me faith in humanity.  Okay, not really…. but I do have a particular fondness for the Count.  In college my roommate and I would often just start counting Count-style (that was an odd phrase to type) for no reason whatsoever and break into fits of laughter.  Those were the days.
    6. Whew… sorry for all the randomness.  This is almost as bad as that day I shared my ramblings about Waldo the cat.

    Finally, in conclusion… here’s a dancing tortoise:

    (via Paw Nation)

After all that randomness, it just didn’t seem right to give you a video that was even remotely related to the disjointed ramblings above.  (Besides, who doesn’t love a tortoise video set to a catchy tune?)  Happy weekend!

Take a chance on a shelter pet!

So, I went to see Mamma Mia last night at one of my favorite outdoor venues.  You can’t really beat sitting outside with friends, munching on snacks and having a glass of wine while enjoying some classic ABBA.  It was such a fun show, and it may have the best pre-show announcement I’ve ever heard.

I’m still humming ABBA songs today… which means that I have to get one stuck in your head too.  It’s blog law. (The law of this particular blog, anyway.  As evidence, see the majority of my song-related post titles.)  However, you’re in luck – the Interwebs has thoughtfully provided me with a video that skillfully combines ABBA and adorable animals with a great message.  Enjoy…

Hope you’re having a fantastic weekend so far!

      Of books and beaches…

A long weekend… the stuff that dreams are made of.  I don’t have to go back to the office until Wednesday.  In addition to Monday’s holiday, I took Tuesday off as well.  As you can imagine, I’m pretty excited!  But first, I need to send you into the weekend with your usual dose of randomness…

      1. Today’s punny pet name is LeVar Purrton. Why?  Read on…
      2. You know of my love for Reading Rainbow.  So I’m sure you can understand how excited I was to learn that LeVar Burton is organizing a Reading Rainbow flash mob to raise literary awareness.  Awesome.
      3. In honor of butterflies in the sky and taking a look because it’s in a book, enjoy these photos of 50 animals reading.
      4. There’s nothing better than grabbing a book and relaxing outside (beach, pool, yard… anywhere will do).  If your pool also contained these guinea pigs or these baby elephants having fun, it’d be a pretty perfect day.  Just make sure you have a lifeguard – perhaps of the dog variety?
      5. Are you more of a beach person?  I’ve got you covered: here’s a baby elephant on the beach.  You’re welcome.

Of course I can’t send you into the weekend without a video. Since we’re letting guinea pigs and elephants have some fun, seems like it’s only fair to let dogs in on the action…

Doesn’t that video just make you want to go outside to play with your pup?

Before I go, I wanted to tell you that I’m trying out a new thing… Bella graciously allows me to stop adoring her for a few moments now and then to do some baking.  Rather than bombard you with recipes and photos here, I’ve created another space for that sort of thing.  Every now and then, you can find me over at I Still Want More Cupcakes, telling you how much I love butter and sugar in addition to puppies.  I hope you’ll stop by sometime. Puppies are still the main event and posting won’t be slowed here, but you’ll get the occasional bonus of some baked goods to ogle.  Win-win, right?

So, what are you up to this weekend?  Whatever it is, I hope you have fun!

So You Think You’re a Dog

It’s Friday!  Time to send you into the weekend with some happy, happy, joy, joy!  Let’s get to it…

      1. This week’s punny pet name is only for the most debonair of pups: Spaniel Craig.
      2. Anyone here watch Parks & Recreation?  If so, I have a treat for you: Dogs That Look Like Tom Haverford.  (I think this one might be my favorite.)
      3. Need more? Fine. Here’s some cats that look like Ron Swanson. (I love you, Internet.)
      4. I already shared this link on Twitter… but in case you missed it, I need to share it with you too.  I read it three times yesterday and laughed like a crazy woman each and every time: “And that’s why you should learn to pick your battles” by The Blogess.  I will be quoting this blog post years from now.  My friends will beg me to stop, but I won’t be able to.  Also, she has a cat named Ferris Mewler… could it get any better?
      5. A cat impersonating a dog? Yup, that happened.  A robot impersonating a dog?  That did too.
      6. Now for dessert, enjoy these cakes from the ’80s… er, I mean, ’80s themed cakes. I’m not asking you to stare at desserts that are two decades old, I promise.

From now on, I think we should dance our way into every weekend.  As an additional bonus, this video helps me forget about my dancing-related irritation over this week’s So You Think You Can Dance results show.  Anyone else?

(via Best Week Ever… which I keep accidentally typing as Vest Week Ever.  Note to self – come up with concept for that title.)

I figured I’d give you a quick dose of dancing dogitude to send you into the weekend, but if you’re not satisfied, go watch the world’s preeminent Chihuahua flamenco dancer do his thing.

Have a fantastic weekend (and join the Saturday Pet Bloggers Blog Hop, after the jump)!

Too many awesome pet blogs, too little time…

As I mentioned yesterday, the fabulous blogs Something Wagging This Way Comes and Kol’s Notes recently gave this blog the Versatile Blogger Award.  So, I’m doing my duty and passing it along…

First and foremost, thanks again to Something Wagging and Kol’s Notes for sharing this award with me.  I highly recommend you pay them a visit – both blogs are great!  Bella and I are humbled to be in such company…

The rules: I have to tell you seven things about myself and then choose fifteen other blogs that deserve the award. (One set of rules said newly-discovered, and the other set just said versatile, so I’m making up my own rule and just choosing fifteen blogs I always enjoy… though it’s hard to narrow it down to just fifteen.  As you can see from the blogroll at right, I enjoy a lot of blogs!)

The last time I did something like this, I shared some puppy-related items about myself and some things about Bella. So, this time I decided to use my seven things to tell you a little more about me (the non-dog related stuff). Here we go:

      1. My favorite food is grilled cheese.
      2. I’m a voracious reader… I go through books at a pretty fast pace.  In fact, I just started a new book last night (the fifth book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries), and finished it this evening.  Hours need to be subtracted for sleep, work, commuting, and dinner, during which reading was not an option.  Another recent example? I finished all three Hunger Games books in 3 days.  When I get into a book, it’ll be gone in no time.  Tina Fey’s Bossypants is next in my sights.
      3. I never thought I’d want an e-reader, but I love my Kindle.
      4. I love writing song parodies (as you may have guessed from my recent post about the Pupperazzi).  Although I can’t really sing, I can’t help myself!
      5. I love outdoor concerts.  And wine.  Especially outdoor concerts that allow you to bring wine.
      6. I enjoy movies… and musicals.  Thus, I was in geek heaven yesterday when I went with a friend to see Stephen Sondheim’s Company at the movie theater.  So far this summer, I’ve already seen a production of Follies (apparently I’m in a Sondheim kind of mood lately), and will be seeing Wicked  and Mamma Mia again soon.  I’m sure there will be other performances in my future as well…
      7. I can relate pretty much anything back to Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210.  It’s one of my… talents?

Whew… hope you made it through my rambling.  Now, to the fun part!  I’m passing this award onto the following blogs:

Don’t count… I may have cheated a little. Honestly, this was way too hard and there were so many others I wanted to mention, so if I didn’t list you above, please don’t be offended!  Perhaps I need some sort of regular feature where I heap all sorts of compliments upon all you wonderful pet bloggers out there, so that I’m not leaving anyone out.  Stay tuned, my lovely readers – the wheels are turning on this one!

      Sealed with a kiss

Today, we’re talking about seals… or as I like to call them, “the puppies of the sea.”  They even call their little ones pups (well, humans call their little ones pups… I imagine that the seals have not adopted our terminology, but I digress).  Anyway, in case you hadn’t already guessed, I find seals pretty irresistible.  (Proof: I used to be obsessed with this animated version of Rudyard Kipling’s “The White Seal” and had a stuffed animal to back up that claim.)

Anyway… I have a pretty wonderful seal video to share with you today.  Recently, two seal pups that were rescued and rehabilitated by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center were released into the wild.  Their farewell scene was perfection:

      (via Jezebel)

Could those two get any cuter?

Sadly, even as illustrated in the cartoon I linked to above, the topic of seals is not without a sad component.  To learn more about the dangers faced by seals and what you can do to help, click herehere, and here.
