Even a miracle needs a hand…

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, it’s okay to start posting about Christmas, right? I’m not going to lie – it’s one of my favorite times of the year.

Today, I was thinking about challenges and how sometimes wonderful things don’t just happen – that sometimes you have to help them along. (I think Bella and Tavish take this approach to meals – why wait for me to prepare dinner when you can speed things along by doing a food dance? Lucky me – dinner and a show!)

Anyway, it seems like the perfect day to share a song from one of my favorite Christmas specials. Such wise cartoons we had back in the day…

Talk about a lesson I wish I could remember all year long – whether it’s a change in my own life or something I could do to help someone else’s miracle along, it’s all about action. Just watching the world go by isn’t enough. After all, as a famous man once said, “If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.”  I’m trying, tiny mice, I’m trying…

Also, it’s time to talk about holiday specials again – what are your favorites? You know I love any reason to stroll down Memory Lane. I should really just buy a house there.

Twilight: Barking Dawn?

Well, I’ve already offered you the punny names of Robert Cattison and Edward Seagullen, but I’ve never actually done a Twilight-themed link roundup. The last movie just came out, so I guess there’s no time like the present:

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Kristen Chewart and Taylor Pawtner.
  2. Anyone dressing up to go see the movie? If so, here’s an option you probably should not consider.
  3. Do your dogs ever play vampire-style? If so, they’d better watch out, or the Dogturi might come get them!
  4. I love a celeb with a cute dog.
  5. I’m not even sure what to do with this one. (While I’m at it… fake spoiler alert!)
  6. Thinking about vampires always makes me want to go reread Bunnicula. I can’t help it. (Speaking of, I think I just uncovered the secret behind my obsession with that series. It apparently continues, and it includes books in which Bunnicula meets Edgar Allen Crow and a trip to the Howliday Inn. That author just gets me.)
  7. Oooh… sparkly!
  8. In addition to sparkly vampires, Twilight also involves wolves. Speaking of wolves, here’s a great question I can’t believe I never thought to ask.
  9. Continuing down that trail, have you ever wondered what it would be like to live among the wolves?

Finally, I could totally get behind this movie:

So. Much. Yes.

So, are you going to see the movie? I’ll be taking it in with a few girlfriends in two weeks, once the opening night madness has calmed down a bit.

Paw Night Long

Yesterday, I promised you some Saturday Night Links. It’s time for me to deliver…

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Nigel Lythgrowle and Whinin’ L. Richie. (Also, enjoy this bonus punny action and the next installment of my continuing Lionel Richie obsession.)
  2. Speaking of puns (because I always am), I’m loving these street fliers… pages and pages of tearable puns!
  3. Possible new reality show: So You Think You Can See Puppies at a Dance Festival.
  4. It’s time for some pretty – enjoy these Wildlife Photographer of the Year winners.
  5. You know what else you need today? Puppies playing. You’re welcome.
  6. I bet this cat has some pointers on how to pick up chicks. Once you’ve mastered the art of the pickup, these dogs will teach you to take your date for a drive.

As always, we end with a video. With all apologies to Jewel, this video was meant for me, and I was meant for it.

It’s not a Full House without a pet…

Today, we’re hopping in the Wayback Machine for another dose of nostalgia. (Mr. Peabody would approve.) By now, you should know that I just can’t help myself…

  1. First up, your punny pet name for this week: Lick Carter (see #8 below).
  2. Have you ever wondered what the lyrics to Ice Ice Baby mean? I’m going to guess that you have not. Nonetheless, I recommend that you stop, collaborate, and listen to Adam Scott explain them to you.  (I have now decided that I would like Adam Scott to explain all lyrics to me. Forever.)
  3. Obviously, Fraggles make everything better.  (Speaking of rock…)
  4. Remember Mr. Wizard? Apparently his social skills were not on a par with his science skills.  I kid, I kid
  5. If only I’d held on to a few liters of Crystal Pepsi, I’d be a hundredaire by now.
  6. This next one is not for the easily offended: Kanye’d by the Bell.
  7. Backstreet’s back… all right?

Well, I always knew Dylan McKay wasn’t such a bad boy. In fact, Luke Perry may have just won the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Bonus: he’s not the only one. I love seeing stars from my youth promoting pet adoption:

On a related note, if Dylan and Kelly develop a sitcom together, I will choose it faster than Kelly chose herself. Or faster than Donna got drunk at prom. You know it.

On a related related note, remember when Brenda was in Heathers?

I’ll stop now.

Things I wish I’d invented: Puppy Text

Regular fonts can be so boring sometimes (except when they’re cats, of course). I mean, haven’t you ever written something and thought that it would be so much better if you could say it with puppies instead of with letters? You’ll never have to make that choice again – now you can say it with puppies that are letters.

(Note to self: create TV show inspired by The Letter People, but involving puppies.)

Now, before you decide that I’ve gone completely off the deep end, let me explain. I’m not suggesting you corral an infinite number of puppies and train them to lay in various letter formations. Someone else has already done that and used the resulting photos to create a puppy font

It’s too bad that you cannot start typing all of your Word docs in this font. I don’t know about you, but the quality of my memos at work would instantly be improved.

I bet you’re wondering how you can start delivering all news in puppy form. Well, you can visit the Puppy Text website to send puppy-fied messages to your friends. There’s also an iPhone app, which I downloaded it within three minutes of my husband bringing it to my attention.

(Seriously, why couldn’t I have come up with this idea?)

House cats keep falling on my head…

When I was a kid, my cat Buttercup always found a way to get into the space between the two floors of our house. (Is that called a crawlspace? I have no idea.) Anyway, my room had a dropped ceiling… thus, the video below is a dramatic reenactment of what occasionally happened to me in the middle of the night.

Luckily, I don’t think any of the ceiling panels ever broke. Usually the cat and ceiling just landed on me with a mild thud. If only we’d had the Internet back then. I could have been a viral video sensation.

In a way, I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who has experienced this particular phenomenon. Any others out there? Maybe we can form a support group. At the very lest, share your stories (about house cats falling on your head or other animal-related housing mishaps) in the comments!

(Bonus points if you can guess the song referenced in the title of this post. Hint: it’s from a movie… so, double bonus points if you can know the movie too. Don’t ask me how to redeem these points. I haven’t thought that far ahead yet.)

Girls just wanna have pun…

It’s Friday… let’s get to the linkage!

  1. First up, your punny pet names are inspired by this slideshow (oh… hello there, Slide 15): Cullen Bones, Nathan Blue Jaydrian, and Pom Daley. (Seriously, I want to meet a Pomeranian named Pom Daley. It’s my new dream.)
  2. Speaking of punny pet names, this week I learned that Prince Harry owns a racehorse named Usain Colt. How is it possible that I never came up with that one on my own? (Bonus link: Animals with misleading names.)
  3. Emmylou Harris rocks. Check out her new project, Woofstock.
  4. Um, I would watch the heck out of Animals Acting Like Sharks Week.
  5. You know I’m a fan of all things Seussical. Thus, I loved this collection of advertising artwork from Dr. Seuss.
  6. I’m not even going to pretend that I don’t love these new ads from Old Navy featuring 90210 actors.
  7. On another nostalgia-related note… moves like Chandler!
  8. Here’s one for the Things Bella and Tavish Will Never Do files. (Oh, Corgis. Always good for a smile.) Yup… I adopt dogs that take their cues from the Gremlins.

You didn’t think I’d make it through this post with only one Olympics reference, did you? As if. Today’s video reveals the results of the Cat Sleeping Position Olympics:

That’s all folks! Hard to believe the Olympics are almost over already. Will you be spicing up your life on Sunday?

Make of our paws one paw…

I’m using the term “paw” quite loosely here, as you’ll see…

First, I’m happy to tell you that (currently) the knots in my stomach have loosened a little. I’m still not back to normal, but I think I’m taking steps in that direction.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled linkage. Today’s theme? Odd couples.

  1. Your punny pet names: Mutt Abbott and Mew Costello. (Or, if you prefer: Bud Rabbit and Lou Dogstello. Also, here’s a bonus pun for you.)
  2. You guys. This dog and cheetah are just… Internet, you have outdone yourself.
  3. In other spot-related news, can someone please explain to me why this piglet looks so much like the aforementioned cheetah?
  4. Apparently baa-baa-bird is now the word.
  5. Speaking of things I’ve heard, it seems that chicks really dig cats. (I’m officially declaring this one a trend. You know, because I have authority to do that.)
  6. Crabs: friends or toys that don’t require batteries? You be the judge.
  7. This bunny, lion & dog trio are just too much to handle. (But are they Super Golden Friends? We may never know.)
  8. Next movie pitch: The Fawn & the Hound. (This time, I demand a happy ending.)
  9. Finally, I’m also a sucker for a good game of tug. This one’s pretty fun.

I chose today’s featured video in large part due to the commenter who referred to them as Rovermeo & Gentooliet. (Also, due to the commenter who made up a punny song about it.) I’m not going to lie, I’m somewhat confused as to how this scene occurred and I’m not about to suggest these two actually get to hang out, but still…

So there you have it… happy Friday! (Unrelated Friday the 13th link: in spite of my rural upbringing, this one is so me.) I hope I’ve made up for last week’s hiatus!

Go crazy? Don’t mind if I do…

Please stand by… we’re experiencing technical difficulties due to the crazy storms on Friday night. You can’t ask for more fun than a power outage in a massive heat wave.

That's the night that the lights went out (not) in Georgia...

No electricity and no air conditioning make Bella (and me) go something, something…

This brief update has been brought to you courtesy of a local Starbucks that has free WiFi but no ice. (Oh, that’s right… we have an ice shortage here too. What’s next?) Not sure when we’ll be able to return to regular posting…

UPDATE: We finally got power back on Sunday night. Bella has her paws crossed that it stays on. She’ll keep them crossed that yours is on too.

Hairy Garfield & the Half-Belated Birthday Doodle

Today’s topic is artistic ability. I have a little – occasionally, I can render a pretty good drawing, although I never quite mastered perspective and scale. I’m by no means an artist, so today we’re actually talking about doodles: what you doodle, when you doodle, how you doodle. (That word gets more fun each time I say it… doodle, doodle, doodle. How do any of you with a Labradoodle or other -doodle dog get anything done? I’d just repeat that to myself all the time.)

Why doodles, you might ask? Well, I’m a habitual doodler, but not terribly creative. Those that have ever sat next to me in a meeting, taken a class with me, or known me for years are aware that I have a doodle of choice. It’s appeared in countless notebooks and textbooks over the years.

Yesterday happened to be the birthday of my favorite doodle inspiration, so I thought I’d honor this esteemed personage with a belated birthday doodle…
