I came in like a hedgehog… or maybe like a tiny dog

I already referenced Miley once this week. I hope you’ll forgive me for doing it again.

(I can’t help it – I cannot seem to get “Wrecking Ball” out of my head, no matter how hard I try. That damn song is everywhere. So, if I can’t get it out of my head, I thought I’d put it into yours. Either there is an minimum number of brains that must be infected with the song at any given time, and I can get out by finding a replacement… or at least I’ll have you for company. It’s win-win.)

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy today’s videos enough to overlook my nefarious earworm plan. I couldn’t choose a favorite, so you get two videos. First up, the hedgehog:

Then, a tiny dog:

While I’m at it, this is kind of genius.

Once more, for good measure…

That concludes today’s installment of Thing I Wish I Could Get Out of My Head But Can’t. See you next time!

Senior dogs rock: Maturity is totally underrated

It’s time for your weekly linkage. I’ve chosen today’s theme for one simple reason. Senior dogs rock.

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Lickey Rooney and Ben Catlock.
  2. This month, I’m doing a series of posts about senior pets on the Grouchy Puppy blog. Head on over and check out my first post to find out how an old dog can teach you some new tricks.
  3. These dogs with old man faces are awesome, as are the accompanying Sanka and Matlock references.
  4. I’m loving these photos of senior dogs across America from Nancy LeVine.
  5. This is slightly off topic, but I don’t care. History is old. This Animals From History ebook looks amazing. (There are puns!) I want to hang prints of the illustrations around my house. It would totally class up the joint.
  6. These vintage art dogs are also pretty great.

Finally, I give you today’s video. This mature dog is pretty charming, don’t you think?

In case you missed it, here’s what else we were up to on the blog this week:

Oh, and don’t forget to swing by Kol’s Notes to enter to win a cool custom pet portrait from AJ Emm!

Honest movie summaries: Dog edition

Movie summaries intrigue me. It’s a challenge to condense two hours of action into one or two sentences. I admire those who can cut through the fluff and do it with a bit of flair. (Case in point: once I read this blurb, I was never able to look at the Wizard of Oz the same way again. Even Siri has gotten into the act.)

Hence, today’s post. I’ve taken a stab at a few of my own, inspired by some cinematic canines (and one adorably corrupt feline). Some of these movies I love, some I don’t… but they’re all getting the business today. Continue reading

Flipping off cancer… the canine way

Give Cancer the Paw

I’ll admit… when I first saw that there was a blog hop entitled “Give Cancer the Paw,” I thought we were basically flipping it off. You know, a canine twist on giving something (or someone) the finger.

Yeah, I’m classy like that.

For my more sheltered and innocent readers (do I have any of those?), by that I mean:

Giving the finger, verb: (1) Flipping off someone or something (“flipping the bird“); (2) Expressing displeasure using an agreed upon hand signal involving the middle finger; (3) Evaluating a fellow motorist’s driving ability; (4) practicing hand calisthenics while also sending a message;

or

noun: (1) Beloved gesture of irritated motorists everywhere; (2) Reliable pose for rebellious former child stars trying to be edgy.

I mean, it kind of fits. People are always standing up to cancer or walking for a cure. Why not flip it off too? I can think of plenty of instances where I’d like to tell cancer to shove it where the sun don’t shine. Whenever it takes away someone you love (be it person or pet), it sucks. It sucks bully sticks.

November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month – it’s a good time to educate yourself about canine cancer and this blog hop is a great way to start. The Give Cancer the Paw Blog Hop is hosted by Peggy’s Pet Place and Pooch Smooches. Visit those blogs for more information about canine cancer, and be sure to check out the other blogs participating in today’s hop. They’re full of information about prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and more – including personal stories and support.

250 punny dog names… and counting

Puns. You want ’em. I’ve got ’em.

It seems that lots of people are searching the Interwebz for punny pet names. I recently did a roundup of the punny cat names that have appeared on this blog (and I’ve done a more general roundup in the past). Today, I’m making your life easier, Internet searchers… I’m listing all of my punny dog names for you in one place.

Dog tired: wantmorepuppies.com

It’s hard work, but somedog has to do it…

(As a bonus, I added a few new ones. You’ll also find a few that I thought could work for both dogs and cats. If I found it somewhere else before I thought of it myself, I’ve linked to that source.) Continue reading

Adopt your very own unicorn…

…or, you know, a dog named Unicorn. But you can call her Corny. (I can relate. I’m pretty corny myself.)

In any event, the following video is rated U for Unicorn.

I didn’t quite get the weird dude at the end, but what can you do? It’s not like I’ve gone out and made my own parody adoption video, after all. He’s still coming out ahead of Sarah McLachlan. Humor always wins over soul-crushing depression.

Speaking of unicorns, I wish that Corny had rocked a unicorn costume somewhere in there. Thank goodness that my other favorite Bella has anticipated my needs. She knew what I needed before I even knew myself.

Also, speaking of being corny… thanks to those of you who totally appreciate my special brand of rambling nonsense. To you I say…

Hope you had a great Halloween… I’m off to celebrate by watching a few of my favorite specials! (The dogs are not in costume, but they’ll more than make up for that at our Christmas card shoot.) Unicorn wishes and rainbow dreams, my friends…

#K9Kamp: The little engine that did

k9kamp canine fitness blog challenge

This… this was a month. A busy one.

You may recall that October’s K9 Kamp challenge was to do more – specifically, to get active with your dog for an extra 30 minutes a few times per week. You may also recall that I found this challenge a bit daunting, given how busy my month was shaping up to be.

So, how did it go? Well, I did not meet my own personal fitness goals, given that I haven’t seen the inside of my gym since September. (Here’s hoping that November will be better.) I ate pretty poorly this month. I had no motivation. I got off to a really slow start with K9 Kamp, having a lot of trouble squeezing in those extra minutes. I wasn’t sure how I would explain it all to you here on the blog.

via giphy.com

(That GIF, by the way, is from the show Being Erica. If you have not seen it, you are totally missing out. Thank you, Canada. I was lucky that a friend turned me on to this show so that I could catch it when it aired on SOAPnet, but I believe you can still buy or download it. Anyone else a fan?)

Anyway, it turns out that doing more with the dogs is easier than getting myself to the gym. It’s also easier than resisting a delicious cookie. Thank goodness!

Once I realized that I didn’t have to do all of those minutes at once (thanks, Kol’s Notes!), the challenge seemed more achievable. A game of tug here, a game of fetch (or my dogs’ version of it, which is not really fetch at all) there, and the minutes added up before I knew it. So, I guess the lesson from this round of K9 Kamp is that even when you’re busy, it can be done!

With that, another session of K9 Kamp has come to a close. Would I do it again?

The llama has spoken. I’ll see you next time, fellow Kampers. How did you get active with your dog this month?

Eat pie. Help dogs. And people.

I like pie.

I like helping dogs.

I like helping people.

I never dared to dream that I would able to combine these three interests into one activity. The pie piece (feel free to groan) always threw me off. However, someone out there has solved this puzzle. Now, you can eat pie that helps puppies and people.

Fun fact: Generosity pie (as opposed to humble pie) totally has no calories.*

If you buy a Thanksgiving pie (or you know, a Tuesday pie – why should we limit pie to holidays?) using this link, you can benefit two charities at once! City Dogs Rescue in DC is selling pies to support Food & Friends, another DC charity. The mission of Food & Friends is “to foster a community caring for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling.”

The proceeds from the pie sales go to help Food & Friends support people in need. In addition, for each pie that City Dogs Rescue sells, Friendship Hospital for Animals has generously offered to give CDR over $20 in free vet services.

So, as you can see, eating pie allows you to help both people and pets. If I’m doing my math right, that means that you’re actually required to eat pie now. Such a sacrifice. We’ll get through it together, okay?

Eat pie. Help dogs.

Pies start at $25 and can be picked up at over thirty locations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. If you don’t live in the area (or don’t like pie for some confusing reason**), you can even order your pie to be donated to a Food & Friends client for the holidays. Click here or on the photo above to order.

I’ve volunteered with Food & Friends in the past, and it’s truly an amazing organization. I’ve dabbled in volunteer blogging for City Dogs Rescue too, and they’re also pretty rad. (I can’t believe I just used that word. I’m so tragically unhip these days.) So, get out there and order some pies. You can never have too much pie.

*This is not really a fact, although it’s still fun.

**I am puzzled by your very existence. What did pie ever do to you?
