7 easy ways to reuse your dog

It’s Earth Day, which means that we should be thinking of ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Today, I thought I’d focus on that middle one.

(Why? Well, Tavish is currently on a diet, so he’s got that whole reduce thing covered. With regard to recycling, I had to talk myself out of just posting this video again.)

The EPA has noted that the best way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. One way to create less waste is to reuse what we already have. When I was thinking about things I could reuse, it hit me. I have a dog. (Two, in fact.) Obviously, my dogs provide me with love, companionship, entertainment, and blog fodder. But… can they do more? I bet they can – and I bet your dogs can too.

Without further ado, here are five alternate uses for your dog:

  1. Foot warmer – Are your toes cold? Don’t invest in a space heater. Just ask your canine companion to curl up on your feet.

  2. Footrest – Why should you spend a pretty penny on a designer ottoman? The perfect footrest may already be under your nose… er, feet. (Obviously, please take the size and temperament of your dog into account. Not all dogs will be willing to put up with your nonsense.)
  3. Bookmark – If you saw it, then you should have put a paw on it.Daily Dog Challenge #82
  4. Shredder – If you simply must shred some documents (before you recycle the paper, of course), don’t invest in a pricey machine. Save your money and conserve electricity by giving your paper to the dog, nature’s shredder.
  5. Doorstop – Pesky door won’t stay open? Perhaps your dog can help. They’re probably going to curl up and take a nap anyway – why not hold that door open while they snooze away? If your dogs, like mine, would never agree to sit still for that long, try using a dog toy instead:Dog toys have many uses
  6. Exercise equipment – Don’t buy a treadmill or an elliptical machine. Just clip a leash onto your furry beast and get moving.
  7. Alarm clock – Don’t buy a new clock. Your dogs can wake you up each morning. Unfortunately, the canine alarm clock does not allow you to choose what time you’d like to wake up. It’s also missing a snooze button.After-market snooze button for your dog

There you have it – seven easy ways you can reuse your dog. Have some ideas to add to the list? Thought of some new ways to go green? Share them in the comments!

Pleasing the canine yard inspectors

It was a beautiful weekend here. Spring has finally arrived! (Although spring also means the arrival of allergies, I’m still thrilled about the warm weather. I wasn’t made for cold climates.)

In any event, I spent a significant portion of the weekend doing yard work. The dogs were fine with this turn of events, as they got to hang out and “supervise.”

Here are a few photos of the pups enjoying the sun. (Tavish moves too quickly for me to get many good shots with the phone – lots of squirrels to chase – but Bella tends to sprawl out, making her a perfect subject.)

Sniff all the things!

I'm just going to rest my eyes while you keep working.

It’s a good thing my dogs like to watch TV…

Will wonders never cease? I’m actually delivering your Friday links on Friday!

  1. First up, your punny pet name for the week: Sansa Bark for a dog and Roger Starling for a bird. (Here’s some extra punnage for you. The second one on the list cracked me up.)
  2. It just so happens that Mad Men is back on Sunday night. Are you as excited as I am? Ah, the glory days of advertising
  3. Speaking of ads, here are a few funny animal ads for your enjoyment.
  4. In other news, Game of Thrones came back last Sunday, so I’m really in TV nerd heaven right now. If I ever make that Game of Bones parody, I will totally be relying on these casting suggestions. (Jon Snow and Ygritte are my favorite doggelgangers, I think.)
  5. You may have noticed I totally just made up a word. What do you think?A dog doppelgänger would totally be a doggelganger, right? (The word doppelgänger is ripe for wordplay. For example, if you happened to be watching an adult film – or even Game of Thrones – and saw someone who looked like you, then you would have just encountered your doppelbanger. See? It’s so versatile.)
  6. Um, anyway… moving on… I can’t quite decide which of these is my favorite. I mean, you can’t go wrong following the motto of House Swanson, but how can I say no to Professor Farnsworth?
  7. This dragon should be an inspiration to us all. (For good measure, here’s a bonus dragon and a bonus dog imitating a dragon!)
  8. On a completely unrelated note, I feel like this revelation is earth shattering (at least for my younger self, who desperately wanted to be on that show). Speaking of old shows, this post totally took me down memory lane (even though some of the shows were after my time.)

Finally, that brings us to today’s video. This Mad Dog intro is quite clever:

Sorry for all of the TV talk today. I promise that I don’t just sit around watching TV all the time. Ask my pups. (Although they don’t seem to mind being couch potatoes from time to time.)

Speaking of pups and not sitting around, you should head over to Peggy’s Pet Place and check out the great blogs participating in the first FitDog Friday Blog Hop. (I didn’t have a chance to get a post up for it today, but I hope to participate in the future. It sounds fun!) In addition, it’s almost time for K9 Kamp again – I can’t wait to enjoy the nice weather with the pups.

What are you up to this weekend?

Awesome agility!

I recently shared video of some dock diving dogs at the Super Pet Expo last month. I’m not done yet… in addition to dock diving, attendees were treated to an agility demonstration and some amazing disc dogs.

Today, I wanted to share some footage of the agility demo by Marvelous Mutts (all rescues… yay!). Enjoy these super speedy pups:

A basket of cuteness awaits…

So, last week I didn’t give you Friday links at all. This week, you’re getting them on Sunday. Clearly, I need to work on my time management skills. Better late than never, right? Anyway… given that today is Easter, I bet you can guess our theme:

  1. First up, your punny pet names: Bunny Bono and Eddie Bunny.
  2. You guys. I can’t. These photos are just… I mean… they complete me.
  3. You probably already know that I love referencing Bunnicula. Obviously, I am unable to move on. So, here’s a link that involves Bunnicula.
  4. Speaking of scary bunnies, I feel blessed that I never encountered one of these Easter Bunnies of Doom when I was a kid.
  5. Eek. Let’s cleanse our palates with this photo of a bunny getting a bath.
  6. I seriously want to go shopping with this bunny.
  7. Get out the tissues for this next link. Happy tears, I promise.
  8. Remember, it’s much better to adopt a chocolate bunny rather than a real one this weekend. No rash decisions, people!
  9. Dogs get all of the press for herding, but this rabbit wants to prove that he can do the job just fine, thank you.
  10. If you’re having company over today, might I suggest you invest in a little mood lighting? It will complement the new art that you should also make quite nicely. (Peeps everywhere!)
  11. I know it’s a little late in the game, but perhaps you could also indulge in some other bunny-related crafts.

Finally, have you ever wondered what would happen if a “vicious” Pit Bull met a baby bunny? Wonder no more. The answer? Magic.

Squee. Squee, indeed.
