Adorable adoptables in northern Virginia: Handsome & Coaster
Every week, I’ll be featuring adoptable pets from local rescue groups. This week, I’m sharing adorable adoptables from the Humane Society of Fairfax County (HSFC) and A Forever Home Rescue Foundation (A Forever Home). Ready to meet this week’s featured pups, Handsome & Coaster? Here we go…
First up, , meet Handsome! This Shepherd/Hound mix weighs approximately 35 pounds and is looking for a new friend. Here’s his bio from HSFC:
“Handsome is a cutie pie. He is a gorgeous boy and not quite a year old. He has some sad stories to share and may take a while to tell you all about his past. He was a stray for many months and is very shy. He needs some special TLC with someone who will be patient with him while he learns to trust again. He is gentle and great with other dogs, but he is slower to show his wonderful spirit and fun side with humans. If you really want to help a special dog, come and meet Handsome. He has already shown great improvement, however, being with a family who will love him will make his progress go so much faster.
Up next, meet Coaster! This lovely Cocker Spaniel is approximately 10 years old. Here’s her bio from A Forever Home:
“Hi my name is Coaster. I am a healthy Cocker looking for a new home. I have a sad story to tell: you see my human mom died unexpectedly and my sister and I got dumped at our Vet’s office. I am very confused and don’t know what is going on. I know I need a new home. I am very sweet and would love to find someone to love me like my mom loved me. In typical cocker fashion, I love to play with toys and I love to snuggle next to you (or on you). Some nice lady is letting me stay with her until I find my own forever home. If you want she will let you come over and meet me.“
If you think you have the perfect home for Coaster, visit A Forever Home for more information or email Info@aforeverhome.org. To view the other pets available for adoption at A Forever Home, click here.
A Forever Home also has a weekly adoption event at the PetCo in Chantilly. For the address and to find out more info, click here.
(If you have your eye on a specific pet, please email for information
first – not all pets will be at the weekly event. However, there are a
lot of awesome pets in need of homes, so if you’re in the neighborhood,
stop by and meet some of them!)

And now, for the talent portion of our competition…
It’s Friday… let’s get to it!
- Your punny pet name for this week: Andy Warhowl.
- Meet the world’s smallest working dog – score one for the little guys!
- Enjoy these lessons in love from ’90s song lyrics. Anyone have any lessons in pups learned from song lyrics to share?
- A dog in a top hat? Seems perfect for awards season.
- I was in Pottery Barn the other day and saw these adorable pillows. Perhaps the new trend in home decor is “put a dog on it”? (Someone alert Portlandia – say goodbye to “put a bird on it.” Dogs are the new birds.)
- If so, I want to buy all of these prints. (I have a pup art addiction.)
- Dog ears come in so many shapes and sizes, but they’re all so darn cute.
- I love a good sleepy dog video… the stretch at the beginning of this one really pushes it over the top.
- Ah, that age old debate: cats or dogs? Where do you land on this one?
I wonder if these dogs would star in my upcoming film, Star Wags: A New Rope Toy. Still casting for the roles of Obi Wag Kenobi, Arf Vader, Slobber the Hutt, Luke Skybarker, Arftoo-D2, Boba Fetch, and Lando Abyssinian.
Have a great weekend and may the pups be with you!
The next great talk show host?
Adorable adoptables in northern Virginia: Goose & Mia
Every week, I’ll be featuring adoptable pets from local rescue groups. This week, I’m sharing adorable adoptables from the Humane Society of Fairfax County (HSFC) and A Forever Home Rescue Foundation (A Forever Home). Ready to meet this week’s featured pups, Goose & Mia? Here we go…
First up, , meet Goose! This Boxer mix weighs approximately 40 pounds and is ridiculously adorable. Here’s his bio from HSFC:
Up next, meet Mia! This lovely lady is approximately 4 years old and weights 65 pounds. Here’s her bio from A Forever Home:
“Mia is a pure-bred English bulldog. She is very friendly. Very low-keyed and lovable. She enjoys walks and playing. She is good with other dogs as well. She is looking for a new home because her family is moving to a new home with limited space. Mia loves to play with a ball and was named after famous soccer star, Mia Hamm, because she’s so good with moving the ball around with her nose and front feet! Mia is a typical bulldog in the fact that she is low maintenance and enjoys relaxing, but she is athletic too and loves a quick play in the yard or doggy park. She loves to fetch tennis balls and enjoys walks. But not too far! She is a bulldog after all. When she was only 3 lbs, she loved carrying around and chewing on plastic water bottles and she still does to this day. She makes you feel protected in your home, and she is so sweet and loyal. We expect there to be a lot on interest in her. If you would like to meet her, please fax an application and e-mail.“
If you think you have the perfect home for Mia, visit A Forever Home for more information or email Info@aforeverhome.org. To view the other pets available for adoption at A Forever Home, click here.

Blog the Change for Animals: Helping pets through photography
For this edition of Blog the Change, I decided to write about a subject that’s near and dear to my heart – shelter pet photography. I’ve written about this subject often over the past few months, but I feel like it’s a message that just can’t be shared enough. Better photos help shelter pets find homes… period.
Today, I want to tell you about a nonprofit called Second Chance Photos. This great organization aims to help shelter pets through photography by encouraging people to donate their time to take personalized photos of animals in need of a forever home. The founder, professional photographer Seth Casteel, does more than just encourage – he even teaches workshops to help aspiring shelter pet photographers get started. I attended one, and it was great!

The right photo really can make a difference – check out some of these before and after photos and see for yourself.
Do you have a camera and love to take photos of your own pet? Turn that hobby into a volunteer opportunity! I contacted several local shelters, and ended up going to take photos for one of them in the fall. (Don’t be discouraged if it takes a little while to get your foot in the door or find a shelter who is interested in your services – I’m heading back to the shelter soon for general volunteer training, and hope to take more photos for them soon.)
I’ve rounded up some info to help you get started. Check out the links below:
- The Second Chance Photos website, which includes tips for getting started and a wealth of other information.
- A list of upcoming Second Chance Photos workshops – maybe there’s one in your area! (If you’re wondering what it’s like to attend a workshop and interested in some tips, you can read my recap here.)
- Even if there’s not a workshop near you, don’t worry! Here’s a PDF full of tips from Second Chance Photos to get you started. It covers everything from approaching shelters to taking photos and beyond.
- For more info, you can keep up with Second Chance Photos on Facebook and Twitter.
- Here are some more inspiring photos – don’t you just want to adopt them all?
- I recently interviewed Seth Casteel of Second Chance Photos – to learn how he got started and pick up a few tips, click here (Part I) and here (Part II).
Have you ever taken photos for a shelter before? Are you considering giving it a try? Go for it – you’ll be glad you did!
I encourage you to visit the other great blogs participating in this event today- so many fantastic causes being highlighted. Check out the list after the jump!
Meatballs: the way to a dog’s heart?
Today’s video features George Clooney. Why, you might ask? First, he’s nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in The Descendants. (Confession: I still need to see this one. I’m so behind!) Second, because he rescued a dog (which earns instant awesome points in my book). Finally, because it’s hard not to giggle when he talks about his unconventional technique for making sure that his rescue dog chose him…

Who else will be watching the Globes tomorrow night? I’ll be tweeting away, so feel free to join me if you’re also a pop culture/movie nerd. I can’t wait!
Billy Joel, baby sloths & more…
Happy Friday! As usual, you’re Corgially Invited to take a moment to relax, smile, and wag your way into the weekend…
- First up, this week’s punny pet name: Ricky Grrr-vais.
- This weekend, I’ll be watching the Golden Globes – I hope that this dog walks the red carpet. (Either way, he’ll be my choice for Best Actor.)
- Speaking of movies, I want all of these cakes. All of them. (Not to eat… just to gaze at lovingly.)
- I love this reference to Modern Family when talking about pet adoption (yay)! Pop and pup culture combined… just awesome..
- Man, I never encounter any cool street art when I’m out walking.
- I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this post about Pinterest from Kol’s Notes. (It really is an addiction.)
- Moving on… I’m awash in baby zoo animal links today. To start, I give you a baby monkey orphanage.
- Two words: baby koala.
- Not enough for you? Fine… three words: baby polar bear.
- These lion cubs are taking a cue from Billy Joel and moving out. (Speaking of lions – it’s an animal odd couple alert, this time with a dog and a lion.)
Fluffy baby animals dining on flowers and snoozing away? My work here is done. If that doesn’t send you into the weekend with a smile, nothing will.
Dog songs: Britney Ears edition
You know I love a good song parody. Perhaps you do too… or perhaps your reaction is best illustrated by this photo…

“Puppy One More Time”
Dogs of a feather flock together
I’m back again with more Daily Dog Challenge photos. It’s so fun to come up with photos that respond to the daily prompts.
Since I’ve been engaging in plenty of navel gazing this week, today’s photos follow on that theme. Although you won’t find any pictures of navels (if I’m being honest, I find bellybuttons gross – no offense, Koly), today’s photos are inspired by the reflective mood that happens as we transition from one year to the next.
Up first, the photo below was in response to the prompt: “Take a photo that signifies a great memory you have with your dog this year.”

The next prompt: “As we get ready to celebrate the New Year, show us your dog being a party animal!”

Bet Bella wishes I hadn’t picked up this boa to wear to our Clue-themed New Year’s Eve party!
You can see all of the photos submitted as part of the DDC here. Enjoy!
