Tomorrow is  Take Your Dog to Work Day!  As I discussed last year, Bella cannot come to work with me, but you know what they say – those who can, do; those who can’t, blog about it anyway!   So, even though Bella and I will not be participating (the closest we’ll ever get is when Bella hangs out under my feet when I work from home), that won’t stop me from sharing a few links!

Cleo over at Grouchy Puppy makes a convincing case for dogs in the workplace.  There are so many hardworking dogs out there helping to prove her point…. in fact, some of our blog friends – including One Pibble’s Wish – are ready to show off their typing skills!  Although there are some puppies who sleep on the job, you shouldn’t hold that against all potential canine employees.

Not sure if taking your dog to work is for you, or where to start?  Two Little Cavaliers has some tips for talking to your boss about this issue.  You can also check out this handy list of things to know before taking your dog to work (courtesy of BlogPaws) and some more great tips from the All Things Dog Blog.  Banjo & Millie also provided a wealth of information about the benefits of pets in the workplace – I encourage you to check it out!

Finally, I leave you with a video that seemed perfect for today’s post:

Are you taking your pup to the office tomorrow?

Too many awesome pet blogs, too little time…

As I mentioned yesterday, the fabulous blogs Something Wagging This Way Comes and Kol’s Notes recently gave this blog the Versatile Blogger Award.  So, I’m doing my duty and passing it along…

First and foremost, thanks again to Something Wagging and Kol’s Notes for sharing this award with me.  I highly recommend you pay them a visit – both blogs are great!  Bella and I are humbled to be in such company…

The rules: I have to tell you seven things about myself and then choose fifteen other blogs that deserve the award. (One set of rules said newly-discovered, and the other set just said versatile, so I’m making up my own rule and just choosing fifteen blogs I always enjoy… though it’s hard to narrow it down to just fifteen.  As you can see from the blogroll at right, I enjoy a lot of blogs!)

The last time I did something like this, I shared some puppy-related items about myself and some things about Bella. So, this time I decided to use my seven things to tell you a little more about me (the non-dog related stuff). Here we go:

  1. My favorite food is grilled cheese.
  2. I’m a voracious reader… I go through books at a pretty fast pace.  In fact, I just started a new book last night (the fifth book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries), and finished it this evening.  Hours need to be subtracted for sleep, work, commuting, and dinner, during which reading was not an option.  Another recent example? I finished all three Hunger Games books in 3 days.  When I get into a book, it’ll be gone in no time.  Tina Fey’s Bossypants is next in my sights.
  3. I never thought I’d want an e-reader, but I love my Kindle.
  4. I love writing song parodies (as you may have guessed from my recent post about the Pupperazzi).  Although I can’t really sing, I can’t help myself!
  5. I love outdoor concerts.  And wine.  Especially outdoor concerts that allow you to bring wine.
  6. I enjoy movies… and musicals.  Thus, I was in geek heaven yesterday when I went with a friend to see Stephen Sondheim’s Company at the movie theater.  So far this summer, I’ve already seen a production of Follies (apparently I’m in a Sondheim kind of mood lately), and will be seeing Wicked  and Mamma Mia again soon.  I’m sure there will be other performances in my future as well…
  7. I can relate pretty much anything back to Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210.  It’s one of my… talents?

Whew… hope you made it through my rambling.  Now, to the fun part!  I’m passing this award onto the following blogs:

Don’t count… I may have cheated a little. Honestly, this was way too hard and there were so many others I wanted to mention, so if I didn’t list you above, please don’t be offended!  Perhaps I need some sort of regular feature where I heap all sorts of compliments upon all you wonderful pet bloggers out there, so that I’m not leaving anyone out.  Stay tuned, my lovely readers – the wheels are turning on this one!

Father’s Day & some bloggy business

Deep thoughts?

A few topics I want to hit today…

First, I’d like to wish a happy Father’s Day to all of the great dads out there, including my own!  (Bella the grandpuppy sends her love to my dad too.)  In your honor, here are some adorable animals celebrating Father’s Day and some amazing Father’s Day cakes.  Consider it a virtual celebration…

Second, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Kol’s Notes and Something Wagging This Way Comes for choosing to honor this blog
with the Versatile Blogger award!  I’ll do a longer post on this
subject later (and pass it on to some other blogs I love), but I wanted
to say thank you.

Finally, I’m sending happy birthday wishes to our buddy Kolchak Puggle (he shares it with Garfield, so he’s in good company)!

I’ll rise, but I won’t shine

Today’s post is inspired by a wonderful activity that I never seem to do as much as I’d like… sleep!  (Last night’s lack of sleep was courtesy of a ridiculous thunderstorm. Needless to say, Bella was not a fan.)

  1. First up, your weekly dose of punny goodness: M. Night Shyamalion and Napawsha Beddingfield.  (Those are not my best work, I know.  I’ll blame it on being tired.)
  2. Next, I give you a puppy falling asleep in his water bowl.  I feel you, little guy… sometimes no matter how much you want to stay awake, it can’t be done.  (Cuteness courtesy of Two Little Cavaliers.)
  3. Puppies who are fighting the good fight against sleep are always adorable.  Exhibit B: this Vizsla puppy.  Exhibit C: this fluffy marshmallow.
  4. In that same vein, I love this video of a gosling (by which I mean baby goose, not Ryan) falling asleep in a little girl’s hand.  (Speaking of adorable feathered friends, did I mention that while I was out running the other day I encountered a little girl being followed around by four ducklings?  No joke. I bet she also has songbirds that tie ribbons in her hair each morning, squirrels to buckle her shoes, and bunnies to tidy up her bedroom.)
  5. Side note – while watching each video above, I had the overwhelming urge to shout “Nap Attack!
  6. You know, this post is actually the perfect moment to wish an early happy birthday to a champion napper, Garfield.  His birthday, in case you are not as big of a Garfield nerd as I am, is June 19.  In his honor, here’s a roundup of some of the best catnap videos the interweb has to offer.

Finally, I leave you with a dramatic interpretation of what I look like in the morning when I don’t get enough sleep:

Here’s hoping you have a relaxing weekend… squeeze in a few naps and catch up on that sleep so you won’t be a grump.  After all, as Doggie Stylish says, happiness is a warm place to sleep!

Everything really is better with puppies

The amazing and wonderful Pamela from Something Wagging This Way Comes (don’t you just love the name?) recently highlighted my humble blog as one of her favorites.  (Pamela had the brilliant idea to encourage her readers to visit some other fun dog blogs out there – including another of my faves, 24 Paws of Love – while she was on vacation… I just may have to “borrow” this idea one day.  In case you can’t tell, I want to be like Pamela when I grow up.)

Anyway, I’d like to take this moment to return the sentiment.  I highly recommend you swing by and check out Something Wagging This Way Comes to meet Pamela and her Golden Retriever, Honey, whose cuteness is off the charts.  Threre are so many fun and interesting things on Something Wagging – one of my favorite regular features is “The Puppiness Project.”  It’s a twist on Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project (which I also loved), in which Pamela attempts to learn how to be happy by studying Honey.  It’s an absolutely brilliant concept, and it will really get you thinking.  (A small sample: the merits of cuddling, learning to eat with gusto, and trying to expect the best from people.)  Maybe we’d all be better people if we followed our dogs’ examples!

However, my favorite post title has to be this one: “Everything’s Better with Puppies.”  If I didn’t already have a blog title, I’d be begging Pamela to let me borrow that one!

So, in honor of Pamela and Honey, I suggest we all embrace our inner puppy and enjoy life without worrying about who is watching or if we look absolutely ridiculous, like this guy:

(via Best Week Ever)

The happiness is just radiating off that video in waves… it’s a nice a reminder to enjoy the simple things, try not to take everything too seriously, and have some fun.  Now get out there, tell Monday you’re going to have fun in spite of it, and enjoy your week!

Cat scratch fever

Although the blog has a very pro-puppy name, I love all sorts of animals (cats included… you may recall my weakness for sleeping kittens).  So, today’s No Frown Friday post is dedicated to the big cats out there…

  1. As always, we begin with a dose of punny: Leopardo DiCatrio, Cheetah Rivera, Jaguar-ren Beatty and Puma Thurman.  (P.S. Apparently my punning abilities qualify me for a job naming crappy wine. Who knew?)
  2. Those big cats must be born with good PR skills.  They know how to make the rounds on the talk show circuit and ambush us with epic cuteness.  Don’t believe me?  Check out this fuzzy leopard cub on Letterman… and this baby cheetah (with bonus puppy BFF) on the Today Show.
  3. Speaking of cheetahs, this little guy could have quite the career on the talk show circuit doing bird impressions.
  4. The cheetah cubs at the National Zoo make me smile.  That is all.
  5. Baby tigersLion cubs! A dog named Lion!  I’m swooning.
  6. Tigers plus lions equals… ligers!  Liger cubs adopted by a dog equals more cuteness than you can shake a stick at.  (Where did that expression come from?  Who is going around shaking sticks at everything? I had to find out.)

Never fear, I saved the most ferocious for last…

Hmmm… I guess I let the roar fool me.  Or perhaps the fact that the kitten decided to hang out in a boot just wiped out my ability to think logically.  Either way, I can’t fight the cute.  Besides, I bet most house cats think they’re king or queen of their “jungle” anyway.  (Seriously though, if you want to learn more about big cat conservation, go here.)

I’ve got a busy weekend ahead, but I do plan to catch the Tony Awards on Sunday.  Anyone else?  Whatever your plans for the weekend, I hope you’re more successful than this guy.

Pupperazzi

When you live with a pet blogger, you can’t even wash your feet without someone taking a picture.  Those pupperazi never go away.

 Bonus Paparazzi mini-parody:

“Open the dog food can, I’ll follow you until you walk me, pupper, pupperazzi.

Baby, there’s no other pet owner for me, my pupper, pupperazzi.

Promise I will whine, until that toy is mine.

Maybe you should feed me, I’ll chase you down until you feed me, pupper, pupperazzi…”

Join the hop!

Dogs in hot cars: when will it stop?

Seriously… what is it going to take?  I dream of the summer when I won’t end up writing a post about the tragic tale of a dog left in a hot car to bake.  I use that term for a reason – on a hot day, you can actually bake cookies in a car.  Think about that for a moment.

You can bake cookies.

Would you put your dog in an oven while you whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies?  That’s exactly what you’re doing if you leave your dog in a hot car.  Yet every summer, many people do just that.

I can’t sugarcoat this one for you – leaving your dog in a hot car is like giving him a death sentence.  So for the love of whatever it is you believe in… don’t do it.  Spread the word so that others don’t do it.  Please.

My Dog Is Cool
Today’s tale of woe comes from Loudoun County in Virginia.  (Thanks to my fellow dog lover Hey Love Designs for the tip.)  I admit, this story has a bit of a twist.  I warn you… you’re going to get angry.  Really angry at a whole bunch of people.  I am.  (Though you probably already figured that out.)  Allow me to set the stage…

A man goes to a party.  He gets in his car, leaves the party and decides, as many do, to stop for food before heading home.  He goes inside the restaurant, leaving his dog in the car.  He then falls asleep at the restaurant.  The manager calls the police, who then arrest him for drunk in public.

Point of anger #1 – If this man was drunk, why was he driving to IHOP in the first place?

Point of anger #2 – If this man was drunk, he was endangering himself, other people on the road, and his own dog (the helpless passenger).  I’ll reserve my commentary on this specific point of anger for another day, but I thought it was worth noting.

Point of anger #3 – The man left his dog in the car while he went to the IHOP.  I realize it was dark out, but I’m not really a fan of the idea of leaving your dog alone in a car for an extended period of time in any event.  You never know when you’ll be delayed and then your dog will be trapped and helpless, at the mercy of the weather and passersby.  (I recognize that others may have different opinions here – that’s just mine.)

The man was arrested in the early hours of the morning, around 5:15 A.M.  He allegedly told the cops that his dog was still in the car, and they allegedly told him not to worry about it.  He was taken to the county jail, where he allegedly begged the cops to help his dog, who was no doubt baking in the unattended vehicle.

Point of anger #4 – Really?  I mean… really?  Would the police (allegedly) have ignored the man’s pleas if he’d left a child in that car instead of his dog?  Did none of the officers have a heart?

Point of anger #5 – Did this man get a phone call?  If so, then why didn’t he call someone to go rescue his dog?  If not, then why?

I’m sure you can already guess the sad ending to this story.  It was over 100 degrees that day.  The man was released from jail late that night.  He returned to the parking lot.  The dog had collapsed.  The man rushed the dog to the emergency vet, but it was too late.  Rex was dead.

Point of anger #6 – How many people must have been in the parking lot of that restaurant that day?  Did none of them (or the management/employees of the restaurant) notice or care about the dog slowly dying inside that oven?

Honestly, I can think of enough points of anger to fill a book right now.  My anger is mixed with a deep sadness about what has occurred.  Poor, innocent Rex.  My heart breaks for him.

Loudoun County Animal Control has launched an investigation, as has the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department.  To follow this saga, you can visit the Justice for Rex Facebook page.

Each time I read one of these tragic stories, I find myself rapidly transforming into a female version of the Incredible Hulk.  Right now, I’d really like to Hulk smash pretty much every terrible person involved in the story above.  You can find more information about the dangers of hot cars in my earlier posts:

You can also visit MyDogisCool.com for more info.  Please spread the word so that we can prevent needless tragedies like this one.

Things’ll go your way…

No theme today… just a hodgepodge of random things that I’m enjoying.  It seemed fitting to send you into this potentially gorgeous weekend with several random doses of silly:

  1. As always, we begin with punny pet names: Maya Rudog and Kristen Pig (totally what I would name a potbelly pig if I had one, by the way).  This week, they’re inspired by Bridesmaids, which I saw last weekend.  Hilarious. (As a result, I also have Wilson Phillips on the brain – in fact, I may have serenaded Bella with Hold On this morning.)
  2. All of this lovely summer weather has me thinking about days gone by… and these Jim Henson themed cakes are a perfectly sweet accompaniment to my nostalgia.  What I wouldn’t give to have my own heckling balcony, like Statler and Waldorf
  3. So… have you ever wondered what would happen if the dialogue in classic Peanuts comics was replaced with random tweets?  Probably not, but the answer is out there anyway – visit @Peanutweeter to find out.  I can’t do the hilarity justice here, but I especially liked this one.  (Speaking of Twitter, follow me at @wantmorepuppies and say hi!)
  4. Additional blast from the past brought to the present: Jem, narrated honey badger style.
  5. I’m going to indulge my nerd side here for a moment.  This blog post on punctuation made me smile… really.
  6. Animals riding on animals?  Sounds like a winner to me.  Enjoy a Chihuahua riding a tortoise and then let the cute continue with a baby sea lion riding a turtle.  Hmmm… why are turtles and tortoises the preferred method of transportation?  Given their lack of speed, you think they’d be hitching a ride instead.
  7. I have nothing witty to say about this next one, so here you go: cute bunnies jumping.
  8. This dog wants to swim with the dolphins, and this one wants to hang out with a cow.  It’s a crazy and adorable world out there.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the most random of them all?  Based on the following video, it’s probably me (at least today).  However, I cannot stop laughing when I watch it:

(via Jezebel)

Thanks for being such wonderful readers… if I could, I’d send you all a puppy bouquet.  I’m participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure tomorrow – it’s the first time I’m doing it as a runner!  Wish me luck, and have a weekend full of wags!
