Fourteen furry reasons to smile

As usual, my monthly roundup is just a little bit late. (You also may have noticed that No Frown Friday was missing yesterday – I’ve been having some technical difficulties, so you’ll get that soon as well. I promise.)

Anyway, I hope you don’t mind too much. Enjoy this roundup of posts from November that put a big smile on my face:

  1. Dear Fourteen Year Old Me from Rescued Insanity – A beautiful post.
  2. Like Herding Cats from Tales and Tails – Behind the scenes of a canine photo shoot,  humor awaits.
  3. Felix, I Swear the Camera Won’t Steal Your Soul from Kol’s Notes – Speaking of amusing photo shoots…
  4. Brooks Says, Adopt a Senior Dog from Peggy’s Pet Place – Can’t argue with that. (In case you’re not yet convinced, read this post from Something Wagging.)
  5. A Couple of Blondes Take a Thanksgiving Walk from Yikes! Loy Turns 60 – I know that sounds like the opening line to the joke, but this story had me smiling from ear to ear.
  6. Why I’ll Never Own a Dog Again from Something Wagging This Way Comes – You know I love thinking about words. How do you describe your relationship with your dog? (This post in response from Rescued Insanity is pretty interesting too.)
  7. 295/365: Babushka? from Life with LuLu & Wally Too! – Honestly, this one just cracked me up.
  8. Monday Mischief: Christmas List Mischief from My Brown Newfies – Being a reindeer for a day is a totally reasonable request, right?
  9. Live: Turkeys on Ice! More Fun Than in Your Freezer from This One Wild Life – I would like to request a TV channel devoted to the happenings in Kim’s yard.
  10. Six Tips for Photographing Dogs With Any Camera from kate with a camera – Several great tips here… check ’em out!
  11. Dogton Abbey Blog, Things Are Getting Crabby Down At The Abbey Episode 4! from  Molly the Wally – Pamela from Something Wagging turned me on to this one. Go read the whole series!
  12. A Wienerholic Family Christmas from My Life with Wieners – This post makes traveling with Bella sound tame.
  13. Friday Funny! Video: Dog loves automatic ball throwing machine from Dakota’s Den – Tavish totally needs one of these.
  14. If You Give a Nutty Pet Blogger Some Cheap Holiday-Themed Accessories from Target from Chronicles of Cardigan – Hilarious as always.

That’s all, folks! Stay tuned for December – I’ll try to get that one to you before February. No promises, though.

Smiling’s my favorite!

As I recently mentioned, I’m well behind on my monthly roundups. However, let’s just consider this belated October installment an early Christmas gift. (By that logic, I’m actually ahead of the game.)

Anyway, I believe that Buddy the Elf would totally support me sharing these posts guaranteed to make you smile. Enjoy. If you need me, I’ll be enjoying selections from the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. Continue reading

Do you want to be an irritating dog walker? The kind that others see on the street and are immediately annoyed by? If so, today is your lucky day!

For one day only, I’m offering a free primer on how to be an annoying dog walker. By employing these seven simple tips, you too can be the bane of your neighborhood! (Keep in mind, to really be the most irritating person on the block, you should use all of these tips in combination with each other. One or two just won’t be effective enough.)

Before we start, I’d like to introduce you to today’s instructor: Continue reading

The dog blog days of summer: Part I

I’m breaking July’s monthly roundup into two installments – once I finally started catching up on my blog reading, the list ended up being much longer than I expected. (Seriously, I’d appreciate it if everyone would dial down the quality of their posts – it would make my life a lot easier.)

Before we get started with the first installment, I just have to share this post from Text From Dog. I just could not stop laughing after I saw it.

Anyway, without further ado, here are thirteen more posts that made me smile in July. Hats off to these awesome bloggers…

7 wonders of the dog blogging world

The other day, I was cleaning and started singing “Whistle While You Work” (as one does), and then it turned into a mash-up of that song and “I’m Late” from Alice in Wonderland. That factoid has very little to do with today’s post, other than the fact that the June monthly roundup is rather late. In any event, here are a few posts that made me smile in the month of June…

Greatest hits from May

I’m almost a month  behind with this monthly roundup… oops! Life has been getting the better of me lately, as you can probably tell. I’ve not been able to get around to as many blogs as I’d like, so here’s hoping I can catch up soon and get the June monthly roundup to you before September.

Anyway, on to the posts! Continue reading

Being a dog is for the birds!

Sometimes, you just can’t deny that bird is the word. Today, it’s the word.

  1. Your punny pet names: Chick Clark and Duckleberry Finn.
  2. Puppies herding ducklings? I could watch that all day. (Note to self: come up with career plan that will allow me to do just that.)
  3. Speaking of careers, who would have guessed that becoming a Secret Service agent would allow one to help ducklings in distress?
  4. Even though the White House is apparently welcoming to ducklings, I’ve heard that a dog park is no place for a duck.
  5. Perhaps I should have called this post Make Way for Ducklings. Here’s another item of duckling-related cuteness: a Labrador adopting an orphaned duckling.
  6. We should give some other birds their due as well – these orphaned goslings and their adoptive canine mom are unbelievably cute.
  7. Have you ever wanted to get up close and personal with some hummingbirds? Now’s your chance.
  8. Oh, heck – it’s an inclusive blog, despite the name. Let’s let the cats shine too. Enjoy this video of a parrot and a kitten hanging out.
  9. Thoughts I’ve never had: “I could really take a good nap right now if only I had a cat to curl up in.” Thoughts a baby chick has had: that one.

Finally, it’s time for today’s video. It’s cute, but what really sold me was the ending…

Thank goodness I managed to get this week’s linkage together. I don’t think I could have made it up to you if I’d skipped it two weeks in a row!

I’m back, baby.

Cat’s all, folks…

Before we get into today’s links, I have some fun news to share. I recently learned that this blog was nominated for eCollegeFinder’s Top Pet Blogs Award. The winners were announced this week, and we made the list of the Top 107 Pet Blogs! (I don’t know why it’s 107, but I kind of dig it.) Pretty cool, huh? Even cooler, some of our blogging friends made the list too. Check out the winners here.

Now, to the linkage. Last week, I featured some otters. This week, I’m feline like featuring some cats. (I blame this list of strange cat facts I encountered a few days ago.) Let’s get to it…

  1. Your punny pet name for this week: Terrence Meoward.
  2. Cheetah cub overload! You’re welcome.
  3. I have a feeling that Kristine from Rescued Insanity will like this next one. A cat trained to hug… could the video be any cuter? (On a related note, Kristine is working on an awesome project to show the world just how awesome cats can be. Swing by to find out more and submit your own story!)
  4. The cats in this video give a new meaning to the term copycat.
  5. By no means am I endorsing this brand (I’m no expert on cat food) – that being said, I have to admit that this ad made me laugh. For Pete’s sake, it has Chris Parnell in it. I’m not immune to the charms of Dr. Spaceman.

Finally, I give you this week’s video. I need to hire this guy to do the music for my punny production company. (I’ve got tons of characters, after all.) Wonder if he could do the same thing with plush dogs?

I know… it’s a weird video, but it just felt right. I’m a weird gal.

What are you up to this weekend? Don’t forget to check out Peggy’s Pet Place and Kol’s Notes for this week’s K9 Kamp challenge. Also, you have until Tuesday to enter the two Happy Tails Spa giveaways I announced last week, so why not do it this weekend?

Adorable adoptables in northern Virginia: Brenda & Smilin’ Sally

Every week, I’ll be featuring adoptable pets from local rescue groups.  This week, I’m sharing adorable adoptables from Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA). Ready to meet this week’s pups, Brenda & Smilin’ Sally? Here we go…

First up, meet Brenda!  This lovely lady is a Border Collie mix and she is approximately one year old. Here’s her bio from FOHA:

“I’m a beauty queen named Brenda! I’m great with other dogs, I love riding in the car, and I absolutely adore being brushed! I’m great at playing fetch and will hurry and bring the ball back to you so you can throw it again. Ooh, I do love that game! I’m very smart and attentive and I’ll tell you a little secret. I’ll pretend like I don’t know how to sit, but just pull those treats out of your pocket and unleash the magic! I’m very alert and attentive, always curious about my surroundings to make sure there’s no fun being had without me. I’m a fun loving, super friendly girl who will fill your home and your heart with joy.”

Do you have the perfect home for this gorgeous gal?

Up next, meet Smilin’ Sally!  This happy Hound mix is approximately four years old. Here’s her bio from FOHA:

You won’t find a ‘funner’ dog – this gal is awesome – inside and out! Sally is a gentle girl who is looking for a new home. She always seems to be wearing this fantastic grin!! She is a calm, laid back, couch potato – foot warmer, not a barker. DOG FRIENDLY. Staff favorite.”

I took Smilin’ Sally to an adoption event today, and she is a happy, friendly gal. Could she be the pup for you?

If you’re interested in adopting Brenda or Smilin’ Sally, visit the FOHA website for more information, or email doginfo@foha.org.  To view the other pets available for adoption at FOHA, click here.

FOHA also has monthly adoption events at the PetSmart in Gainesville and at the Treasure Hound in Chantilly.  To find out more info on these events, click here
(If you have your eye on a specific pet, please email for information
first – not all pets will be at the monthly event.  However, there are a
lot of awesome pets in need of homes, so if you’re in the neighborhood,
stop by and meet some of them!)

Do you have room in your home (and your heart) for one of these cute canines?  Then contact FOHA.  If you know someone else who might be in the market for an awesome companion, please share this post.  Let’s find some homes for Brenda and Smilin’ Sally!

Many marvelous musings from the month of March

It’s time for another monthly roundup… in no particular order, here are seventeen marvelous musings I enjoyed in the month of March:
  1. The hag in the bag gets tagged from Little Dogs on Long Leashes – I bow down to the Seussian brilliance of this post.
  2. Wherein Dewi and I Interpret the Sick-in-Bed Moaning Scene from When Harry Met Sally from The Chronicles of Cardigan – I don’t even have words.  This post is made of hilarity.
  3. Mall Hair from Raising a Super Dog – As a former concessions jockey at a small-town movie theater, this post spoke to me.  (Our popcorn was not pre-popped, though refilling the “butter” was enough to put me off it for life.)
  4. Life with Cush Dogs – Guest Blog Post from Talking Dogs – Something I’ve often pondered, but never had a term for…
  5. Do you have dreams for your dog? from Something Wagging – To paraphrase the Rolling Stones, you can’t always get what you want, but sometimes you get exactly what (and who) you need.
  6. In Search of Spring from The (mis)Adventures of Sage – This one is technically from February, but I fell far behind on my blog reading and didn’t actually read it until March.  However, the photos made me smile!
  7. Some Days You Just Want to Watch a Cute Video from Bunny’s Blog – I totally agree.
  8. The Eye Drop Rodeo from Tales and Tails – Anyone else remember when Rachel hated her eye drops on Friends?  That’s all I could think of while reading this post.
  9. Favorite Video Friday – Let’s Go to The Dog Park! from No Dog About It – You just have to smile when you watch this dog’s eye view of the dog park.
  10. Dog a Day Project – Famous Last Words from Doggie Stylish – Haven’t we all said this one to a pup from time to time?
  11. Summoning Charms from jodistone – I had to share this post. It involves both Harry Potter and irresistibly cute pups!
  12. Dog People from under the blanket – These are just too much fun.
  13. Wordless Wednesday 31 – 14 Years in 4 Minutes from Bringing up Bella – This one made me cry, but in that good way. Then it made me bust out my own photo albums for a stroll down Memory Lane.
  14. bambino vs fido: on loving dogs less from Fido & Wino – A thoughtful post about love and change, and realizing that change doesn’t necessarily mean less love.
  15. A Bedtime Fairytale from Kol’s Notes – The drawings are genius. Genius, I tell you.
  16. Life Without A Dog is No Life For Me from Rescued Insanity – The title says it all, don’t you think?
  17. How Dogs Read Us, Part I from Will My Dog Hate Me? – Fascinating. (The next installment appeared in April, but I’ll share it as a bonus anyway. Here’s Part II.)
These are a bit skewed towards the beginning of the month, as I fell behind on my reading. So there’s the possibility of some March posts on April’s list. (Apparently this is my pattern – see #6 above.) I get to make the rules, right?

Anyway, if you missed my earlier monthly roundups, check out my favorites from February and the ones I loved in January. If that’s still not enough links for you (in which case, I bow before your capacity for linkitude), you can always check out my Friday linkathons for more.Did I miss any of your favorite posts from March? Share them in the comments!
