K9 Kamp begins – will you join us?

Photobucket

I thought about using a quote from Troop Beverly Hills as the title of this post, but somehow “shopping is our greatest thrill” didn’t really seem on point.  Not that the lack of relevance has stopped me from singing it to myself and looking up more quotes.  Ah, the Internet… waster of time and enabler of nostalgia.  What did I ever do without it?

Anyway, welcome to K9 Kamp! As I mentioned last week, I’m a featured blogger in this great challenge sponsored by Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place. You may be wondering what this is all about, why I’m participating, and what’s in it for you. Allow me to explain…

K9 Kamp is designed to encourage getting fit while spending time with your dog.  I agreed to be a featured blogger for a few reasons: (1) Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place are awesome blogs; (2) I was extremely flattered to be invited to participate; (3) although I started jogging in the spring and do yoga from time to time, I allowed myself to be a bit lazy over the summer (it was so hot out… and stuff); (4) Bella tends to be a lazy pup herself, and is more likely to nap than go for a run; (5) even if I could convince Bella to go for a run, she has a tendency to run in a zigzag pattern rather than a straight line, making things somewhat difficult; (7) the challenges take approximately an hour per week, which seems right up Bella’s alley; (7) K9 Kamp sounded like a great opportunity to get some new fitness ideas for both me and Bella; and (8) it wouldn’t hurt Bella to practice some obedience skills either.

So… that’s all well and good, but what’s in it for you?  In a word… prizes!  There are over $1000 in prizes up for grabs in a series of weekly giveaways, as well as a grand prize (go visit our Kamp counselors for the details – there are lots of ways to enter – and to check out some of the sponsors).  Getting fit, hanging out with your pup, and possibly winning some swag?  Sounds like a win-win to me.  I’ll be updating you from time to time on my progress here – we’ll see if I can convince Bella to get out of her cave and get into my car… er, into some workout gear.

Will you be participating?  Let me know in the comments, and then join in today’s blog hop and tell everyone why you’re heading to K9 Kamp.  You can also follow the #K9Kamp hashtag on Twitter for additional updates.

The only kind of camping I’m willing to do

Drum roll, please… it’s announcement time!  PhotobucketYou’re actually finding out about this big announcement before Bella, so consider yourself in the inner circle.

Do you (or your dog) need to get moving?  Has couch time (or in Bella’s case, cave time) increased while play time has decreased?  Then this is the post for you… read on, dear friend!

Kol’s Notes and Peggy’s Pet Place have come up with a brilliant idea.  It’s called Koly & Kelly’s K9 Kamp, and it’ll be happening from September 8 through October 13.  It’s a great opportunity to get fit while spending time with your pup.  I’m going to be one of the featured bloggers – so I’ll be participating in the challenges and sharing my experiences with you.  Stop by here or here to find out how you can participate.  Hope you’ll join us!

How I met your tortoise… and some Muppets

Another Friday is upon us… so you know what that means.  It’s time to send you into the weekend with a smile!

  1. As always, we begin with a punny pet name.  (It’s tradition, after all.)  This week: Jason Beagle and Marshowl Erickson (see #5 below).
  2. I’ve decided to follow that up with a little shameless self-promotion.  Check out the newest creation over at I Still Want Cupcakes.  I’m considering a whole summer series inspired by ice cream… suggestions are welcome!
  3. Ice cream got me thinking about ice cream cones, which then led to me thinking about the cone of shame.  So, um, what happens if your dog forgets he’s wearing a cone?  Hilarity.  (Cone of shame jokes are never going to get old, are they?  Seriously, that stuff is timeless.)
  4. Stick with me here… it’s random train of thought day.  (As are most days for me.)  This video of a dog (and cat) on a scooter caused me to exclaim “Dogs… on… wheels!” when I saw it.  (This video produced a similar reaction.)  Which of course got me thinking about Dogs… in… Space, followed by Pigs in Space, which ended with me looking up the premiere date for the new Muppet movie.  (November 23… I’m so there.  Who’s with me?  If you haven’t seen the trailers, I recommend you treat yourself by doing so now.  The Muppets plus Jason Segal… I could not ask for more.)
  5. Talking about Jason Segal reminded me how much I loved his performance of “Dracula’s Lament” in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  Of course someone made it into a video with the Count from Sesame Street… it’s things like this that give me faith in humanity.  Okay, not really…. but I do have a particular fondness for the Count.  In college my roommate and I would often just start counting Count-style (that was an odd phrase to type) for no reason whatsoever and break into fits of laughter.  Those were the days.
  6. Whew… sorry for all the randomness.  This is almost as bad as that day I shared my ramblings about Waldo the cat.

Finally, in conclusion… here’s a dancing tortoise:

(via Paw Nation)

After all that randomness, it just didn’t seem right to give you a video that was even remotely related to the disjointed ramblings above.  (Besides, who doesn’t love a tortoise video set to a catchy tune?)  Happy weekend!

Everything really is better with puppies

The amazing and wonderful Pamela from Something Wagging This Way Comes (don’t you just love the name?) recently highlighted my humble blog as one of her favorites.  (Pamela had the brilliant idea to encourage her readers to visit some other fun dog blogs out there – including another of my faves, 24 Paws of Love – while she was on vacation… I just may have to “borrow” this idea one day.  In case you can’t tell, I want to be like Pamela when I grow up.)

Anyway, I’d like to take this moment to return the sentiment.  I highly recommend you swing by and check out Something Wagging This Way Comes to meet Pamela and her Golden Retriever, Honey, whose cuteness is off the charts.  Threre are so many fun and interesting things on Something Wagging – one of my favorite regular features is “The Puppiness Project.”  It’s a twist on Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project (which I also loved), in which Pamela attempts to learn how to be happy by studying Honey.  It’s an absolutely brilliant concept, and it will really get you thinking.  (A small sample: the merits of cuddling, learning to eat with gusto, and trying to expect the best from people.)  Maybe we’d all be better people if we followed our dogs’ examples!

However, my favorite post title has to be this one: “Everything’s Better with Puppies.”  If I didn’t already have a blog title, I’d be begging Pamela to let me borrow that one!

So, in honor of Pamela and Honey, I suggest we all embrace our inner puppy and enjoy life without worrying about who is watching or if we look absolutely ridiculous, like this guy:

    (via Best Week Ever)

The happiness is just radiating off that video in waves… it’s a nice a reminder to enjoy the simple things, try not to take everything too seriously, and have some fun.  Now get out there, tell Monday you’re going to have fun in spite of it, and enjoy your week!

    Catch!

I may have mentioned that Bella does not understand the concept of how to catch a toy.  She always tries to use her paws instead of catching it in her mouth.  My working theory is that she skipped a lot of days in Being a Dog 101.  However, perhaps I wasn’t giving her enough credit – the Beagle in the video below has taking catching with his paws to a whole new level.

Maybe I just didn’t nurture Bella’s talents… with a little work, perhaps Bella could have been quite the little athlete.

(If you just can’t get enough of this adorable breed, go test your Beagle knowledge with this quiz.)

    Thank cuteness it’s Friday

Happy Friday!  Let’s get to it:

    1. Shannen Doherty turned 40 this week.  I already punnified the names of the main characters, but that doesn’t mean today’s punny pet names can’t still have a 90210 theme!  There’s one for the birthday girl, of course: Shannen Do-birdy.  Why stop there?  I give you Chasin’ Priestly.
    2. Baby rhino.  ‘Nuff said.
    3. Remember our roundup of animal odd couples?  The mismatched cuteness continues with a deer and a goose, as well as a cat and a dolphin.
    4. What’s awesome?  Dogs with jobs
    5. Those dogs have to get to work somehow.  Check out these photos of 50 dogs at 50 miles per hour.

I’m sure that after a long week at work, those dogs want nothing more than to relax with a round of golf.  Observe:

    Best post ever?

I have so much for you today that I won’t waste your time with an intro… on to the cute!

    1. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, this week’s punny pet names:  Peter O’Drool and Conan O’ Grrrrr-ien.
    2. So how did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day yesterday?  Was it as cute as this celebration at the zoo?
    3. I love March Madness. (Go George Mason!)  What better way to celebrate its arrival than by combining basketball and adorable animals
    4. Not into basketball?  That’s okay – Jezebel is running a Cats vs. Dogs bracket!  Yesterday, the Cheshire Cat triumphed over the Cat in the Hat, while the Pit Bull pulled off an upset over the Chihuahua.  Go check it out, and then keep an eye out for the next voting period!
    5. I don’t want to overplay my hand here, but I seriously think that this collection of 50 photos of Basset Hounds running might be one of the best things ever.  (Bonus installment: Basset Hounds having a Chariots of Fire moment on the beach.  Bonus bonus installment:  After I wrote that sentence, I searched and discovered that someone made a video of a Basset Hound running with a Chariots of Fire soundtrack.  It’s a good day.)

In conclusion, I want to croon the lyrics to Eternal Flame to the following video so that it knows how much I love it. Video, you complete me.

    (via Jezebel)

This post is filled with so many best things ever that I don’t even know how to process it all.  So I’m going to go look at puppies and puppy products instead.  Happy Friday!

    Bella Bowl V

    All Things Dog Blog
Bella Bowl weekend is traditionally a busy one in our household.  That’s right, it’s not just Super Bowl weekend around here.

We throw an annual Super Bowl party known as Bella Bowl… we’re up to Bella Bowl V.  The dining room has been christened Puppy Stadium for the day.  Sometimes Bella will rock Giants paraphernalia for the party – but her interest in wearing a jersey is usually short-lived.  Such a fair weather fan…

Anyway, I’m excited to add a new tradition to our Bella Bowl/Puppy Bowl/Super Bowl weekend… the All Things Dog Blog Super Dog Sunday Blog Hop!

I didn’t have the heart to make her wear her jersey and let me take a new photo, given that the Giants didn’t even make the playoffs.  So let’s just agree that the pose above is how she reacted when she learned this news.

    Want to join the hop?
