In defense of the not-so-lesser panda

Did you know that the red panda is sometimes known as the lesser panda? I always thought that name was a bit rude. (Apparently I’m not the only one. Wikipedia agrees with me, noting the “pejorative implications” of that moniker, and the San Diego Zoo says we shouldn’t call them lesser.)

Anyway, today I’m giving the not-lesser-but-really-awesome red panda some time in the spotlight. It’s a virtual red panda hug.

  1. Today’s punny pet names: Apanda Bynes and Gloria Panderbilt.
  2. In the battle of red panda versus pumpkin, who will win?
  3. Lesser? Ha! While Stella Luna, a red panda, was busy running for president, the “greater” panda was just sitting around eating bamboo. Not only that, but Stella Luna is a working mom!
  4. Speaking of red panda moms (note to self: great name for a social group), I love these photos of a red panda mom picking up her cub.
  5. I could stare at red panda cubs all day. They’re unbelievably cute. Seriously, they are so very cute.
  6. What’s better than one baby red panda? Twins!
  7. I have a gift for you… it’s in this box. (Those faces are killing me.)
  8. More pandas in action: walking the balance beam, munching on some berries, and just generally being adorable

I’m charmed by today’s video. It’s like They Might Be Giants meets PBS meets the zoo.

It’s entirely possible I’ll be singing that song all weekend.

That’s what (odd) friends are for…

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that I have a weakness for animal odd couples. Today, I have quite the assortment of crazy combinations for you:

  1. Your punny pet names: Heidi Plume (for a bird) & Tim Bunn (for a rabbit).
  2. Maybe Bella and Tavish should watch this kangaroo and lemur at play – it could provide some inspiration!
  3. Speaking of kangaroos, these photos of a baby kangaroo and a baby wombat sharing a pouch (seriously) sent my cute-o-meter off the charts. Did you know that the babies of both species are called joeys? No, not like that Joey. (Although… how you doin’?)
  4. Now, for a few odd couples involving pups. First up, these two… I mean, Mango and Milkshake? Those names are amazing. I melt.
  5. This guy has some pretty rocking bodyguards. (I’m totally fighting the urge to play The Bodyguard soundtrack right now.)
  6. Oh you know… it’s just a turtle and a Bulldog hanging out. Eating cereal.
  7. This next odd couple was meant to be. What are the odds that a Dalmatian will adopt her very own black & white spotted lamb?
  8. This baby sloth (also known as a pup!) is besties with a teddy bear. I now want to hug a baby sloth.

Finally, it’s time for this week’s video. You can’t go wrong with a dog and some dolphins, right?

What do you have planned for the weekend?

A dog’s dilemma: to pee or not to pee?

I didn’t really have a theme in mind for today’s links. However, after I put the list together, I noticed a few common threads: England, philosophical musings, and sharks. (I’m not entirely sure how that last one fits, but there you have it.) So, here we go…

  1. Up first, your punny pet names: Romeo Montawoof and Juliet Catulet.
  2. I’m not done yet…  I know that this one is stretching the “pet” part a bit far (though I suppose it could still work for a goldfish), but I couldn’t resist: Shark Wahlberg (or Sharky Shark, if you prefer).
  3. This puppy is the Jack Handey of the canine set. (Oh heck, why not… I made my own. If you make one too, share the link in the comments! Need some inspiration? Start here…)
  4. While he’s busy musing, cats are busy doing… in the arenas of politics and fashion, at least.
  5. Speaking of cats… I had no idea you could patent a method of exercise, but what do I know? (No update on how to properly herd cats, however. Get your patent application ready!)
  6. The Olympics are over, but that won’t stop me from posting a few more London-y type links: enjoy these adorable cards and these cool cakes.
  7. Since we’re talking about England today, did you ever see the great video explaining the difference between England, the United Kingdom, and Great Britain? If not, it’s definitely worth a watch.
  8. If you live every week like it’s Shark Week, then you should decorate your home appropriately. (Speaking of Shark Week…)

Finally, today’s video offering combines British-ness and deep thoughts (a la Henri):

Does sharing this video count as making use of my English degree? I sure hope so.

Girls just wanna have pun…

It’s Friday… let’s get to the linkage!

  1. First up, your punny pet names are inspired by this slideshow (oh… hello there, Slide 15): Cullen Bones, Nathan Blue Jaydrian, and Pom Daley. (Seriously, I want to meet a Pomeranian named Pom Daley. It’s my new dream.)
  2. Speaking of punny pet names, this week I learned that Prince Harry owns a racehorse named Usain Colt. How is it possible that I never came up with that one on my own? (Bonus link: Animals with misleading names.)
  3. Emmylou Harris rocks. Check out her new project, Woofstock.
  4. Um, I would watch the heck out of Animals Acting Like Sharks Week.
  5. You know I’m a fan of all things Seussical. Thus, I loved this collection of advertising artwork from Dr. Seuss.
  6. I’m not even going to pretend that I don’t love these new ads from Old Navy featuring 90210 actors.
  7. On another nostalgia-related note… moves like Chandler!
  8. Here’s one for the Things Bella and Tavish Will Never Do files. (Oh, Corgis. Always good for a smile.) Yup… I adopt dogs that take their cues from the Gremlins.

You didn’t think I’d make it through this post with only one Olympics reference, did you? As if. Today’s video reveals the results of the Cat Sleeping Position Olympics:

That’s all folks! Hard to believe the Olympics are almost over already. Will you be spicing up your life on Sunday?

Meowing for medals

As I confessed last week, I’m an Olympics junkie. Maybe I should just embrace it and purchase some Olympics-inspired decor. Or I could rock some Olympic nail art. In any event, I’m just a tad obsessed. So, it’s the same theme, but all new links…

  1. First up, your punny pet names (both inspired by the same gold medalist): Tabby Douglas and Gabby Puglas.
  2. Did you watch the Opening Ceremony? There were Corgis! This roundup of Corgi-related goodness (including photos of the Queen and her pups through the years) will leave you smiling.
  3. On a tangentially-related note, includes two very adorable Corgis.
  4. I’m so jealous of those pups who get to experience the Olympics in person.
  5. Apparently the pups are taking over in London this year!
  6. The Olympians of the animal kingdom are pretty darn impressive – guess it’s a good thing (for the human athletes) that they aren’t competing this year. (It would be a battle for the ages.)
  7. Speaking of animal athletes, Michael Phelps has a canine swimming buddy (in training). Also cute? This swimming pup. (Not so cute? This. Just… ew.)
  8. Even if your pup won’t be winning a gold medal in London, there are still many great Olympic activities she can enjoy!
  9. Are those a little too traditional for you? Well, then you’re in luck – how about the 100 meters postman race?

Finally, I think today’s video is all the evidence we need that kitten wrestling should be an Olympic event.

I can’t help myself… I have a second video today. Meet my new favorite track star:

I’ll stop now. Happy Friday!

Barking for the gold

Despite my general lack of athletic ability, I’m kind of an Olympics nerd. I really enjoy watching them, so you can bet that tonight I’ll be watching the opening ceremony. The costume craziness is just too good to pass up. (My menu will not be as classy as this one, although I now really want this baking gear.)

Anyway, the torch is on its way, so let’s get to it:

  1. This week’s punny pet names are, yet again, inspired by Olympic athletes: Aleasha Packramone and Tabby Wambach (or, if you prefer, Abby Wambark).
  2. The games are in London, Eng-a-land, this year, making this post from under the blanket a perfect fit for today’s linkage. (Did you know that London is the first city to host the Olympics three times?)
  3. Well, this is an entirely new take on the dog eating your homework. (I just love an Olympian with a beloved pet!)
  4. There will be some dogs looking out for those attending the Olympics. All security should be this cute.
  5. Maybe your dog wants to get in on the action? Make him this Olympic rings dog toy. If that’s not enough, tell him to check out the Pet Blogging Games.
  6. Adding Olympic sock catching to the games in 2016? I vote yes.
  7. I’m fond of (watching) many sports, but I’ll always have a soft spot for gymnastics. (I desperately wanted to take gymnastics classes as a child, but the logistics did not work out. To this day, I still can’t do a cartwheel.) As such, I enjoyed this salute to Olympic gymnast hair.
  8. I loved this next link – photos of Olympians hugging their parents. So sweet.
  9. Let’s stick with the sappy for a moment. Check out this list of ten inspirational moments from the Olympics.
  10. Cheetahs named after Olympic sprinters? Brilliant.

Today’s video is, fittingly, about Olympic athletes and their pets.

Are you excited about the Olympics? What events are you looking forward to watching?

Make of our paws one paw…

I’m using the term “paw” quite loosely here, as you’ll see…

First, I’m happy to tell you that (currently) the knots in my stomach have loosened a little. I’m still not back to normal, but I think I’m taking steps in that direction.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled linkage. Today’s theme? Odd couples.

  1. Your punny pet names: Mutt Abbott and Mew Costello. (Or, if you prefer: Bud Rabbit and Lou Dogstello. Also, here’s a bonus pun for you.)
  2. You guys. This dog and cheetah are just… Internet, you have outdone yourself.
  3. In other spot-related news, can someone please explain to me why this piglet looks so much like the aforementioned cheetah?
  4. Apparently baa-baa-bird is now the word.
  5. Speaking of things I’ve heard, it seems that chicks really dig cats. (I’m officially declaring this one a trend. You know, because I have authority to do that.)
  6. Crabs: friends or toys that don’t require batteries? You be the judge.
  7. This bunny, lion & dog trio are just too much to handle. (But are they Super Golden Friends? We may never know.)
  8. Next movie pitch: The Fawn & the Hound. (This time, I demand a happy ending.)
  9. Finally, I’m also a sucker for a good game of tug. This one’s pretty fun.

I chose today’s featured video in large part due to the commenter who referred to them as Rovermeo & Gentooliet. (Also, due to the commenter who made up a punny song about it.) I’m not going to lie, I’m somewhat confused as to how this scene occurred and I’m not about to suggest these two actually get to hang out, but still…

So there you have it… happy Friday! (Unrelated Friday the 13th link: in spite of my rural upbringing, this one is so me.) I hope I’ve made up for last week’s hiatus!

Play in the pool, not the drool

Hot. So hot. (As you can see, the heat temporarily rendered me unable to produce normal sentences. I’ll attempt to remedy that.) To the links!

  1. Up first, your punny pet names: Michael Whelps and Catalie Coughlin.
  2. Before we get into the linkage, I just wanted to remind you that you have until July 4th to help pair service dogs with military veterans in need. It just takes one click!
  3. Is it hot where you are too? If so, how do you plan to cool off this weekend? These two dogs have some good ideas.
  4. Or maybe you otter try this method instead. (The face he makes in that video is the same one I make every morning. True story.)
  5. Want to go out? Get cleaned up and make sure to rock some stylish summer threads. Take a walk and then try some of these pickup lines.
  6. You could also take in a baseball game or go to a concert. (I’d probably skip the vet though, if possible.)

It’s always a good idea to hit the pool. No, not that kind of pool. This kindOr, you know, you could just do this…

Whatever you do this weekend, remember that a dog in a hot car is a bad idea. Here’s how you can help fight the stupidity.

This dog can swim circles around me

It’s been one of those weeks… so I hope you’ll understand that I didn’t have time to put together your regularly scheduled Friday linkage. I’ll make it up to you. I promise.

Until then, enjoy this video. Considering summer weather is here, it seemed pretty appropriate. I think it’s impossible to watch it and not smile!

What are you up to this weekend?
